He was just born to do this, and he did it as well, if not better, than anyone who has ever done it. And Ed was the perfect sidekick for his schtick.

The more time that goes by since the GREAT Johnny Carson retired, the more obvious it is HOW lacking the late-night talk show hosts are in the last 2-3 decades, compared to the incomparable Carson (and Ed too). I was a teen when Johnny did his last show, but was privileged enough to have watched lots of his shows, mixed in with Letterman. But outside of those two, call it being spoiled or whatever, but I can't watch the garbage from the likes of Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, et al, because of HOW good Carson and Letterman were.
Yes; it was during a presentation by David Niven. And without missing a beat, Niven said, “Isn’t it a shame, the most applause that man will ever get is for stripping off and showing his shortcomings.”

Elizabeth Taylor, though, may have had the better line when she came out (David was there to introduce her) and said "That's a pretty hard act to follow...."

But no one got offended by comedy until 2015.

It makes me sad that there will never be television made like this again. I was born the same year Johnny retired. I grew up enjoying the work of his decedents like Letterman and O’ Brien. But man no one made magic in front of camera like this group of individuals.

funny thing.... 3/28/74 I was in basic training in Ft Ord California... I was barely 17 years old... and in July of 1974.. a stripper dared me to go streaking in Wichita Kansas./...... I did it 2 times in different parts of Wichita that night/morning....

I'll never forget walking past the newspaper stand January of 05 and finding out he passed. I just started sobbing, walking and sobbing. When Johnny used to put us all to bed it was a kinder safer 🇺🇸 usa. This country has lost it's way, I constantly fantasize about leaving it altogether. funny thing.... 3/28/74 I was in basic training in Ft Ord California... I was barely 17 years old... and in July of 1974.. a stripper dared me to go streaking in Wichita Kansas./...... I did it 2 times in different parts of Wichita that night/morning....

I do remember several streakers in my town running through restaurants ect.
I remember reading somewhere that the streaker was writer-actor Pat McCormick.

i remember the whole streaking thing back in the 70's... i also remember the Dinah Shore and the Mike Douglas shows & Saturday morning cartoons on Nyquil.. the drugs were really good back then...lol
I'll bet the bad jokes were on purpose, and then BOOM, the big surprise finish! I'll bet everybody was in on it. I think Johnny would have been more shocked if it had been a real rumor. Even the NBC security just stood there and laughed like it was all planned. Great stuff.

We had streaking going on at my high school. It was a fad for awhile. Always took everyone by surprise and they never got caught.

I'll never forget walking past the newspaper stand January of 05 and finding out he passed. I just started sobbing, walking and sobbing. When Johnny used to put us all to bed it was a kinder safer 🇺🇸 usa. This country has lost it's way, I constantly fantasize about leaving it altogether. Just negativity and more negativity served up by criminals and the media. Very sad...
