    Back in 1988 to 1993 I played ASL with my best mate Laurence. Every second Saturday from noon until 3am on Sunday morning. In May he passed away. Im now the proud inheritor of all our original ASL modules. Trust me, he kept everything. All the modules and scenarios...and those beautiful counters. When Winter arrives im going to relearn how to play.

    Thx George
    Great review of what to use for ASL.
    It is very useful for us who have not dared to take the plunge yet.
    I know from myself that once you are hardcore for a particular playing genre, you take too much for granted in relation to new players.
    So thanks again

    I'm looking for the American prices for DIY games. I think Yanks had it.

    • @georgehiotis

      DIY scenarios in ASL are covered in Chapter H of the ASL rule book. If you opt for the 2nd edition bundle, that is about $95 USD from MMP publishing.

  • @maubunky1
    @maubunky1 Před rokem +2

    Ugh, $95 just for a rulebook? Rules that could be programmed into a $5 phone app or a PDF file? Multi-man publishing really has people by the short and curlys. I hope there's at least color photos and historical references and colored text and color play example graphics as well, and they come in a nice hard cover with a 3 ring binder. I mean, I paid less for a 30 volume Encyclopedia Britannica set I bought for my kids, albeit a gently used library set.

    • @georgehiotis
      @georgehiotis  Před rokem

      Get the PDF copy from wargamers vault instead. Plus, you get all the vehicle and gun data you will need. From my perspective the historical information is great, examples are illustrated and in color, but you can never please everyone.

      @@georgehiotis Sounds good, thank you for the advice and for making the video. I saw a tutorial video where the guy had taken his copy of the pocket rulebook to a store to have the binding cut off and a spiral bound installed. I wonder if he bought the 3 separate rulebooks and bound them all in one? Because he was showing us Chapters that included A through H? Infantry at the beginning, but tanks/guns, Pacific theatre stuff at the end of his book? I'd have to double check that. But yeah, PDF would be great on my Kindle. I wonder if you have to buy 3 separate PDFs to have all the rules I will check. Thanks again George.

      @@georgehiotis The eASL rulebook will be updated as needed from what I understand. So I bought both. I didn't think I'd like using the e-book but alas, I was wrong. Get the free Foxit PDF reader while your at it.

    Is West of Alamien an alternative for King and Country?

    • @georgehiotis
      @georgehiotis  Před 2 lety +1

      Nope, West of Alamien's focus is the British vs. the Germans (Afrika Corps) in the Desert. You will still need Beyond Valor to play. Here's the link to more info on Board Game Geek: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/8605/west-alamein-asl-module-5
      I bought into For King and Country because the scenarios focus on the European Theater of War including the early war Blitz to the West, Crete, and a few other late war scenarios.

    • @jonclark299
      @jonclark299 Před 2 lety

      @@georgehiotis is West Alamien a good intro to British troops, all scenarios excluded

    • @eddyhoughton6542
      @eddyhoughton6542 Před 7 měsíci

      If you have a chance at getting a good clean second hand copy of West of Alamein, then do it. They're like hens' teeth. But the scenarios are 100% desert, so you'll have to learn a whole different set of terrain rules. It's been superceded by Hollow Legions (2023 edition) which has the full Italian OB and For King and Country which has the British OB. FK&C is a great module, and Hollow Legions has a gazillion scenarios, but the bottom line is that for any of these modules you WILL need the rules and Beyond Valor, for the system counters. You can't play ASL without those two core items, simple as.
