    Two ways to actuate vanos (Tested with an s50 motor)
    1 - Like in the video
    2 - 24mm wrench on the intake cam. Rotate the cam while installing the vanos unit
    I prefer method 2 because you can align the secondary exhaust sprocket TDC indicator perpendicular to the head.

    Great stuff. Vanos is often critized by those who doesn't understand it. Especially when tuning the car.

    Nathan question I just replaced my m52 vanos with a dr vanos. And now I'm getting p1519....I think screwed up putting the new one in by I guess not catching the vanos on the first tooth, if I pull it back apart how do I time it correctly for the vanos to be timed with the intake cam?..is it the same way you installed in your video or different method?

    Thank you Nathan. I just finished rebuilding my VANOS on a M52 and I'm getting a P0340 error. I suspect I made the exact mistake you showed where I did not get it started on the first notch when installing the VANOS. How do I "undo" it? Remove the VANOS, lock everything down, and re-install? Any help would be appreciated.

    My bmw 328i just shut down while driving and will not restart. The mechanic replaced the cam shafts but it still will not start. So he says it's the timing variable, I think I'm correct on the term. I think he said the vanos went out as well. Is there a recall on this common problem with bmw's

    Is it possible for these engines to jump time? I have a 99 323i that was dead soldier I replaced too many parts to list and even got a new ecu. Car starts up and will die instantly if I don't give it gas, if I give it 1200 for a few seconds and let go idle drops to 800 after a few surges of near choke out, but will run for about 5 minutes or so max and then die out. Here's the weird part, while it sits in idle the car makes a weird pre detonation sound like small explosions, the closest description I can come up with for the sound is like you are winding up a jack in the box . If I give it gas or drive it the sound stops and when I get to idle the sound starts again and engine eventually chokes out. The throttle also seems to surge a bit but settles with very little touch of the gas. The popcorn sound goes away as soon as you touch the gas also. Sound is hard to pinpoint but doesn't seem to be at the rod it's more like the valves or intake manifold but it's pretty loud and somewhat consistent The sound travels up to like maximum 50ft or so. Compared to a distributor type motor it sounds like time is super advanced like almost 180 off lol. Scratching my head here.

      @jakesnow4816 Před 6 lety +2

      not likely that it will jump time, however if you have disassembled the engine chances are the timing procedure was not done correctly. your symptoms sound to me more like a weak fuel pump or a vacuum leak though, the sound you hear is probably the exhaust rattling around as the engine struggles to idle smoothly.
      1: check fuel pressure, 2:do a compression test, 3: if youve opened the engine your vanos may have not been splined on the first tooth.
