- New to Photo Printing? Don't get ahead of yourself!
Before you try to jump in head first into this field, take the time to master the basics and if you are ever suddenly hit with an abrupt Color Balance or Quality change, STOP Printing any further printing and run a nozzle check to determine what is the cause!
Unless it is caused by complete user error, it is most likely due to a stop in ink flow from one or more color channels.
On a CANON Printer this will case the early failure of your expensive print head.
And do not get ahead of yourself. Patience is the key!

Good advise for New printers like me. Jose talks to you like a mate.
You are amazing. I print canvas and you have been so educational.
Thank you for all this helpful information.
Glad it was helpful!
Great advise as always.
Thanks!
Wise words!
Thanks!
I really lean a lot from your videos. Thank you.
Thank you!
Jose you have the patients of a saint lol, You da Man ;o/)
No saint here but I do have patience!
I watch quite a few photography YT channels and most of them that talk anything about printing mostly have a Pro 1000 and they always mention that when you use the printer just be ready for it to use a lot of ink especially when you turn it on and get ready to make a print...which tells me they don't really understand printing practices and don't use the printer enough to keep it from running purge cycles every time they get ready to make a print. It sounds like they turn it on once or twice a month and then make a few prints then turn it back off until the need to print more in a month or so.
I think you nailed it!
Thank you Jose. I just picked up a Pro-100 and will take your advice seriously.
An you will do just fine. The PRO-100 pretty much does it all for you if you print from Print Studio Pro and use Photo Shop of Lightroom.
Just curious Jose. Can QImage do a nozzle unplug pattern on plain paper or should it be done on photo paper?
Yes cheap copy paper. But you should choose Glossy or luster and or matte Paper setting if you have a printer that uses both without switching. Highest quality and No Color Management! That will force the driver to print with more purer colors without too compositing.
Great. Thanks again for the valuable advice. Greatly appreciated.
I have just gotten back into printing with a new Epson P800 & from what I’m reading & the videos I’m watching; I feel I really made the right choice w Epson. It seems that Canon is much more temperamental.
Both have advantages and disadvantages.
Hey Jose I have an idea for a video. Could you suggest a cart to set my printer on or what the best option for a stand or cart to use. And does it matter if my printer is making the table shake will that effect my prints at all? Also can I use Epson hp/other manufacturers papers on my printer I know you use red river papers in your videos but I was wondering if I could stock up on papers if I see them on sale and they are not canon.
A sturdy table or stand will of course be best. But a slight shake will not clause any problems. HP or Kodak papers will not be compatible with Epson or Canon printers due to their coatings. So don't stock up on those.
Hey Jose I have canon 100. Where do I find the reference photo to print out? Also what software or hardware do you recommend to calibrate my monitor to match my printer thanks in advance.
Join my facebook groups and then you can download the full pack of the single image.
hi Jose !!
what size of paper and quality of it do you normally use to run the cleaning cycle?
and...can you please tell me how I can find you on facebook?
thanks
Javier
Cleaning cycles do not use paper. Nozzle checks regular letter size copy paper. Facebook group link is on all the video descriptions.
What printer you used to print that heavenly black background pepper photo?, It is a GEM..!
PRO-1000 with 100% oem inks and CANON PRO Luster plus one damn good profile.
Did you profile the canon paper with the OEM ink or used the downloadable ICC profile from canon? if you created your profile did you compare the canon profile print to your profile print? very solid black color seems to be resulted, am almost positive you used the chrome optimizer setting to full.
No this profile was one that I made to order for a customer. He is using a CANON PRO-1000 and one of them was for PRO Luster. The results turned out better than canon.
WOW..!
Can the variation between the pro 1000 printers out of the box reach the degree of such amazing profile result? this makes me think now about the output of my printer and whether am squeezing ever drop from its potential even if the test image looked to my eyes perfect...!
The video did it zero justice. And pro luster pancreatic my crappy paper but the results did indeed astonish me. I had not made a custom profile for that paper figuring that the oem profile would good enough. Like I said this was done for a customer. He used it to print the Torture Gamut Image and claims to be the best result he has ever seen.
I would say that if a newbie doesn't have a monitor calibration device, at the very least they should adjust the monitor brightness. Their colours might not be accurate but at least they won't get dark prints. They could print the reference image and attempt to adjust monitor colours to get them as close as possible to the print. Obviously using something like Xrite colormonkey would be preferred but doing this would be better than doing nothing.😊
There is one individual I will not mention that does exactly that and he is very happy with his results. Of course a real calibration is always best but not always possible.
Hi Jose. I love your channel and appreciate the depth of your printing knowledge very much. I'm looking at purchasing the Pixma Pro 10 to print images for my photography portfolio. I'll need to produce double-sided prints and can't find any information online for best practices to do this. Any thoughts particularly regarding the Pro 10 and paper types for best results? Thank you so much, Jose. I appreciate your time and thoughts very much. Respectfully, Chris Violette www.violettephoto.com
You will need to buy paper coated in both sides. However it is extremely tricky to do. You can print on one side. But when you print on the other side there is always a chance the printer will damage the first side you printed on. You also join to prints back to back the right adhesive. Red River papers sell dual side papers.
Dont let theese expensive printers fool you. I have an H.p printer that cost 50 dollars and a Canon pro 10 that cost around 700 dollars, besides gloss defrentia or what ever the hell that name is. Both of the printers prints are almost identical infact the 50 dollar printer is more accurate. It all boils down to color profiling. Hp technology is top of the line and more cost efficient. Dont be a sucker like I was.
What HP printer are you comparing? Gloss differential will always be a deal breaker for most who truly care.
HP makes some very good inkjet photo printers. Their designjet z3x00 and z6x00 printers are as good as Canon or Epson of same size and quality. I saw an old HP Z3200 recently it is an 8 years old printer with 11 pigment inks cartridges and a gloss optimizer cartridge. Using the right paper and ICC profile these printers can produce prints rival or even better than some of the new printers. But I don't like your chance of ever getting a fully working one for 50 dollars.
