Jessye Norman as Madame Lidoine in the Act II “Ave Maria” from Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites. Production: John Dexter. Conductor: Manuel Rosenthal. April 4, 1987.
For me, this is the best performance and production of this opera. The stage is so spacious and perfectly used, transforming (based on the clips I’ve seen) so effortlessly into the scenes of the story, and the cast and orchestra are so properly attuned and paced.
as someone within the vestiges of their twenties who was reared on only the heaviest metals, Dame Jessye was my doorway to this insanely heavy, emotionally and musically cavernous operatic world. she was power and control incarnate, grace personified. my definitive deliverer of the liebestod and the four last songs. can only mourn that I never witnessed her sing, but her gifts were give to me complete long before that. I hope she knows rest. I'll miss her. I hope to pass her on. that voice. that power. that control.
I first discovered her music while browsing through youtube videos of Dido's Lament. I was immediately drawn to her rendition...so full of emotion. I proceeded to scour the internet for every performance of hers I could find. Rest in peace beautiful-lady-with-the-voice-that-causes-Angels-to-pause-and-listen.
It is very comforting coming here and reading the coments. I was in shock when I found out, cried a lot and I am still heartbroken. Her light, her music, her teaching will live on. Thanks for changing lives, Ms. Norman. We will always love you.
Sing with the angels, Jessye .
