The Zima Board is a hackable single-board server... they say it's the "world's first," but I just say it's awesome. So, what makes it different than all the other single-board PCs? Two things: It's X86 and it has a PCIe slot. Check out the video for all the details.
It comes with CasaOS, a container OS Linux distro. It's similar to Portainer, but a lot easier (and based on Debian 12). I'll cover all that in the video as well.

That graphics card has lived the life. Probably had more types of beer than me.
nice to see the coaster make an appearance
I literally just ordered one from watching your video. Let's go prime day! Thank you for showing me what this actually does. I'm looking forward to utilizing this with an 18 TB hard drive for my net work.
These are awesome!! I'm special so I got the green special edition. Took way too long to ship 2-3 weeks. I set it up for Plex transcoding. I'm going to buy another one for tinkering. I'm always away from home can't afford to tinker with the one I have now. This time around I'm ordering straight from Amazon. Please put out more videos on Zimaboard!!! I'm a new subscriber 👍
You're already a hit to me, as soon as I saw the Feist book :-)
didn't realize they added community libraries to CASA-OS. If I was starting all over again i'd probably give it a try. I'm currently Proxmox with ubuntu server and portainer for most of my docker stuff. I like having the web terminal, basic file system browsing, and docker all in one interface with Casa-OS. I have spun-up a VM with it running on Ubuntu server so I can keep experimenting with it. If they keep updating it I think it'll probably win me over.
Pretty neat little SBC. It can sit on top of the tower of mini PCs.
Cant tell you how happy I am you made this video. Literally just turned my old system into a deb12 server with casaos on top. I love it so far for my HA setup and jellyfin. The dockers are STOOPID EASY
YES! people can be snobby against things that are easy... but to me, the point is to actually use the system to do fun stuff... That's better than tinkering with config files for days.
I just ordered one
Your final comment was very well said. This is Exactly what we need. More people trying and tinkering ( failing ) and getting themselves to the next level ( who knows, could be humanity ). Just heard that some of the big AI companies can't expand fast enough because they can only put so many AI cards in one location at once or they literally will cause a black out in that state ( from legit AI source ). So they move on to the next state. They could use the electricity from people like that then, like the Wraith from that Stargate Atlantis TV Series for energy, fits since OpenAI is calling their new initiative Stargate, well let's GO then !!!
My partner just said she likes your hair gradually turning into the dead cat on your microphone.
I’d love to run a nas with this if there was a cool enclosure. I have a spare ryzen 1600, but I worry about power consumption
Backup pihole server in my homelab, running arch though (lol). Maybe I'll throw an HDD at it and make it a NAS secondary backup server for critical backups.
I’m thinking about Proxmox / virtual Opnsense on the MS-01 because of those 10G SFP+ ports. Damn I want a Proxmox box, just can’t decide on it. The MS-01 may not have enough ports, and I’ve heard the paste job is bad and that Liquid Metal will drop temps by 20 C. It has some odd compromises though. I’m also somewhat concerned about long term support like BIOS updates.
I'm exactly in the same boat as you. I would recommend to read ServeTheHome Forum thread on the MS-01. It does have a x16 slot at x8 speed but need to read through to see what other card card you can add if you need more 10 GbE+ ports ( for fitting purposes ). That is the biggest thing with most of these overseas ones that haven't established themselves yet. The BIOS for sure !! They are making some really good products though. I have been thinking the same, the 12th Gen with Proxmox and pfSense CE ( they actually write code back to FreeBSD, OPNsense does NOT ). The Zimaboard is really nice though and I may actually get one. Maybe for Joplin, LogSec, Standard Notes personal server, Netbird server or maybe an RSS feed like he said. Keep the MS-01 with pfSense / OPNsense with Wazuh, Graylog, DFIR-IRIS, Velociraptor, Grafana and InfluxDB...
Nice video. Noob question. Sorry for asking such a simple question but I have good hope to have an answer here. Is it feasible to make a Minecraft server with this?
Very easy. It comes with casaos running. There are currently two dockers for hosting minecraft servers directly on the included store. simply download and run all (or most) in a nice and neat GUI
Indeed. Probably for 15-20 people... How many do you plan to have on the server?
Can you do a video on the cheapest ways to access your home server which would be behind CG-NAT?
Wireguard on a Debian VM
@@teksyndicate I’ll look it up, Thanks!
Can you try it with Dockge?
I haven't found any reason to use that over casa or portainer. It seems like it needs more work
Wait a second, what's the problem with PFSense? Not a rhetorical question, I've been using it for years with no issues but with that said I haven't been keeping up with the tech world lately.
They have been doing basically everything wrong... going in an anti-open direction (slow updates and subscription models)... having meltdowns on reddit, etc. They also attacked Opnsense and created plenty of issues there. It's enough to make videos on, but there are probably plenty of videos with specifics. If it works, there's no need to touch your setup... but if you ever update, go with OPNsense.
@@teksyndicateInteresting, you should do a video on it.
I opt to respond to your question at 1:27 with a counter-question: does the Sigma 200-500mm lens attach to the camera, or the camera to the lens...? czcams.com/video/xWLvJ4SXxyw/video.htmlsi=HpL0GCPKW8GB2p-u 😁
But can I run a Counter Strike Source server on it? :)
indeed
Love tinkering. When people ask me why? I kind of just stare at them until they walk or go away.
Most people do nothing and do not understand others who do things. I think understanding and accepting this is really good because it helps you ignore their opinions. They have no idea what you're doing.. they don't care... And they think it's a waste of time.... UNTIL you create someone useful, then they love it. But they have no idea how you made it.
Thanks for the video, I enjoy your content. I just don't understand the appeal of this product. The PCI slot isn't designed well, and the brackets have to be bent or removed. That seems like a failure in consideration on their part. Cool that it provides 2 sata ports, but they just have to dangle on the outside? I'm far from being a neat freak, but that's a sloppy mess I don't want. The CPU isn't that powerful compared to a pi4/5, and you get much more value from a mini pc such as a Minisforum GK41 with celeron j4125, 8gb ram, 2 lan ports, nvme and sata drive capacity, is near silent and idles ~4 watts. If folks like them, cool... but I don't understand the appeal.
It still has it's place. However having to bend your bracket is a Huge oversight though. Such a small thing, but makes them look very, very stupid.
@@sbme1147 I assume they would tell you to remove the bracket, but to me It feels like an oversight, or a bad measurement was taken during design. I don't want to alter my parts to deploy them in a given use case if I don't have to do so. If a use case doesn't need the slot and sata connectors, then it's a nice looking self contained sbc, but then there are better value items for that. I just don't get all the excitement for it.
Sue my pants off! 😂
I've lost hope of a Albert and Logan collba
If albert is ever in town, I'll hit him up... and if I move to Asia... I know he loves it there, so who knows. Albert is cool.
I don't like the fact that it's not symmetrical
