- In June, we caught up with King Buzzo, Dale Crover and latest addition Jeff Pinkus (ex-Butthole Surfers) before their show at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto for this episode of Aggressive Tendencies. In this interview, the trio share their thoughts about being dubbed the "Godfathers of Grunge," insights about their songwriting process and Buzzo's recent acoustic solo album. June 22, 2015.

Grunge is so loosely defined anyways. Soundgarden and Alice In Chains had a metal influence, Pearl Jam was more of the 70s stadium rock type band, and Nirvana was more like an alternative band with a big punk influence much like the Pixies. The only reason these groups are associated as playing the same type of music is mostly due to where they came from and when they emerged.
Ty Manning - I agree. Grunge was a title slapped on the "Seattle Sound" by media outlets. Most of the bands didn't even acknowledge grunge as a genre. Kurt Cobain hated the term.
Yea I don`t think PJ liked the grunge title too much, they were quick to change their sound and kept doing it pretty much each record...Eddie even changed his singing style around No Code... When I think of grunge it is usually either early Nirvana Bleach era, or AIC`s self titled album.....2 totally different sounds but both kind of sludgy and grungy.

Buzz Osbourne; Thank you for making Kurt that tape that turned him onto punk. Thank you for putting Dave Grohl in touch with Kurt and Krist. Most of all, thank you for defending Kurt against all the bullshit people are being fed about him/his death. The first time I saw 'Montage of Heck'...it struck me as actually trying to make Kurt Cobain look bad. Then I found out Courtney Love had a big hand in it and it all made sense.

I was really disturbed by Montage of Heck, it was so exploitative and I felt dirty for watching it. You’re just viewing someone’s deepest darkest feelings and flaws, all of those incredibly personal things that aren’t meant for the world just being carelessly tossed out to the public for another cash grab. It was just disrespectful in my opinion.

Even though I'm sure they're so tired of hearing and talking about such a shitty time in their lives where they lost a friend, I'd love to hear their stories of Kurt. Like a short book or something where they just go "heres the guy we knew. He's what we know is bullshit. The end."
I'm sure they'd never do anything to make money off of their relationship with him, even if their intentions were good. I'm not even a Melvins fan but they have a lot of class.

what I love about them is that in real life they are the same, down to earth and unfiltered. Buzz is one of THE most approachable legends ever.
I think something that Kat Bjelland of "Babes in Toyland" said describes Courtney's involvement in Montage of Heck well.

Babes in Toyland had an amazing first two albums. Kat is a legend. Courtney ripped off her style in a big way.
Believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see is the perfect analogy when it all comes down to it te the whole Kurt /Courtney saga. Some women are opportunists. Courtney would be in that category.

I saw these guys open for Primus in the early 90s at U of Maryland. It was a revelation, and after I regained my hearing I bought several albums. There are few musicians who seem fun to be around, these guys are at the top of the list.
Melvins is one of the few bands that i really enjoy listening to their interviews almost as much as i enjoy listening to their music

Courtney was getting nervous because lately, people have been yelling for them to investigate. So she had to prove her lies again.
I had the lovely opportunity of sitting down with these guys in Brooklyn many years ago. At the time I was dealing with the death of my best friend, and they were super accommodating, and spoke to me about all kinds of stuff very candidly, with the caveat I don't write about it. It really helped me out, and I'm eternally grateful for that. Much love guys.

A documentary is never a good representation of reality. even if it looks real. Especially when the people which it's about are NOT THERE ANYMORE to speak for themselves. The images are wisely chosen , the cut, the montage itself... This documentary is only one side of Cobain, please don't forget it people.
While I think it’s more likely that they knew him better than someone doing research (since they DID know him personally), you can hide being suicidal very well. When my mental health got bad many people I knew personally didn’t know.
It also can be otherwise. Many people assumed that I'm very gloom and sad while I just want to punch them in the face for that, because I'm totally fun, fine and well

The Melvins save the lives of at least 13% of their concert patrons. The remainder have conflicting existential analyses due to their regularly scheduled programs. In any curriculum, Pinkus is a boss.

For the record, Melvins are the best band I HAVE EVER SEEN. I Have seen them 20 times since 1994. There are other bands I have seen more than that, but Melvins are the best.

I saw them in 1999 in Athens Georgia while on holiday in the states and...I wandered out half way through. I was that bored. Each to their own i guess. The support band, Melt-Banana where great though, on the upside and the beer was very cheap.
bunny21x you must be easily pleased. I seen them open for faith no more years ago. It might have been fantomas/melvins but regardless they were nothing too special. Faith no more on the other hand could probably be rated up there as one of the best bands I have ever seen.

@@scooterruns9355 I know. I’ve read just about everything out there about Kurt and Nirvana. I think the truth is probably somewhere in between. I doubt we’ll ever know for sure. Not the biggest Krist fan anymore after some f the things he’s said and done over the last decade or so, but he still was part of one of the greatest bands in music history, and a lifelong friend to one of the greatest songwriters and lyricists in history. So I don’t entirely know how to feel about all of it. That’s ok though. Not knowing is more interesting sometimes I thinks

I was at that opera house show in ‘91. And saw melvins the night before, too, in Buffalo. Prime melvins era, as far as I’m concerned. Buzz had that giant carpeted 4x18 cabinet. Nirvana was awesome, too. About a month before Nevermind was released; Sept ‘91. End of the good days.

The Wedge Maybe Kurt felt comfortable talking with that guy about his pain and not Buzz. Why would this guy lie about what Kurt told him?
Chainsaw Melody Except that he'd seen doctors for the stomach pain, and several people who knew him had seen him doubling over in pain, or not being able to eat or keep food down because of the stomach issue. That's why he was so thin, he had mentioned more than once about not being able to keep food down and that he felt like he was literally starving.
Chainsaw Melody He had the symptoms and had complained about the stomach pains before he'd ever started shooting up heroin. I'm not sure why his friends or especially a doctor, would lie about having witnessed that or treated it. Most people aren't known pathological liars like Courtney, who lies even without an agenda, but just for the hell of it. So I'll believe most people over Courtney.

I saw the Melvin's plan Iowa City in the late '90s and Dale played with gardening gloves on his hands and after the show we got to meet him and he gave us some of his garden gloves it was a really small venue called Gabe's Oasis

My first Melvins show was in 1987 in Santa Cruz Ca at UCSC and there were only 25 people there. It was extremely loud and I loved it although the students didn't think much.

Krist and Dave. I'm sure the truth is somewhere in between but none of it affects my thoughts, memories and feelings about Kurt. He was the best and he inspired me to play guitar and he's a legend. Rip Kurt. You are missed and loved.

I'll always view Soundgarden as the Godfathers of Grunge. Chris Cornell helped Mother Love Bone. Worked with Alice In Chains. And you could almost say he is the founder of Pearl Jam after he did his Temple of the Dog side project which was a tribute album to Andrew Wood. Soundgarden was the only one of the big four Grunge bands on the Sub Pop compilation record.

kurt was called that first, due to his resemblance to the Godfather inthe movies, as well as his guns and his dangerous and shady side , his authoritative boss side, etc. He also brought Grunge to the top in the mainstream first. Later they started calling a few others that . I guess they were the other godfathers since there's always a few godfathers in any mafia.

Thank you for this excellent interview! Some bozos have interviewed Melvins and it's annoying. Knowing that I could do their job better than them that is. Melvins stay in tune just fine! Most of their stuff is in drop D obviously. Freak Puke rules!
Buzzo shoots straight. Stoner Witch helped shape my musical tastes when I was a kid. I guess it is still the same, whatever sounds good.
I have a feeling that instead of reaping the rewards of a killer career, others have borrowed heavily off of The Melvin, shame. What an influence, though. My friend saw Fantômas years back and saw Buzzo winding up cords after the show, said they wanted to save cash by not having any crew to move equipment. I hope Buzz was joking, really.

DIY after all these years, respect to Buzzo. Kidding or not, no band at that level of influence or tenure HAS to do that, so it's cool that they do.
Man. Stoner witch is a great album. Had it on c.d. in like 96. Found a copy on vinyl 2 years ago. Among my favorites in my collection.
