There are so many expressions with prepositions in English. So let's learn some, including on the way, in the way and by the way. I'm also going to teach you the best way to memorise these expressions so that they stick in your head like glue.
In my most recent video, I taught you when to use prepositions when you're talking about things like place, location, position, time. There, I teach you lots of rules for using prepositions. But I also mention that there are some expressions that simply have no rule and that we have to learn the expressions as a group of words. So that's what we're going to learn in today's lesson.
Now, I could just give you a list of 30 preposition phrases and say, hey, learn them. But I want to teach you a much more effective way of learning these expressions and learning them with the correct preposition. And here's the technique that I recommend you use. Create a little story, just a few sentences using as many of the expressions as possible that include the same preposition. It sounds so simple, but if you learn them in context and if you learn them with other expressions that have the same preposition, it's going to be easier for you to remember them.
So here's my first story using today's first preposition. Can you guess which preposition we're going to look at first? Have a look at the story and see if you can guess which one. You've got 5 seconds. Go.
That's right. The first preposition is IN. And here's my story.
Who's in charge here? I'm not in the mood to wait. In fact, I'm in a terrible mood. I paid for this iPad in advance, but my excitement was in vain. I want to see the manager in person now, and I'm in a hurry. I have to be at work in a minute, otherwise I'll be in trouble. Simple.
So here you have ten common expressions in English which use the word in. There's no logic why they include in. So we have to learn them as a group of words. So the expressions I want you to learn from this little story are...
To be in charge of something or someone. Now, a very common mistake that students make is using the word the responsible. I am the responsible of the shop. I am the responsible of ten people. That's incorrect in English. You cannot say the responsible. You can say I'm responsible for blah, blah, blah. But the most common way is saying I'm in charge. I'm in charge of the shop. I'm in charge of ten people. As I said, this is a really common mistake... Get my book. That fixes all the most common mistakes that students like you make in English. The next expression was, oh, and it's free. Click up there to get it. Or, there's a link in the description.
OK, number two was in the mood for something. I'm not in the mood to wait, which is the same as I don't feel like waiting.
And talking of mood, which is how you feel, which is obviously up and down. But if you are in a good mood, then you're having a happy moment. And if you're in a bad mood, then you are sad or angry or just feeling down. Are you in a good mood? No, I'm in a terrible mood. In this case, I'm angry because my iPad doesn't work.
In advance. This is what you do when you buy something on Amazon. You pay, the money leaves your account, and then you get the product. You don't pay after you get the product. You don't pay when you get the product, you pay in advance. You pay before you get the product.

Your a awesome teacher. Dear sir I want you to make a video about the difference of preposition of place and adverb of place.
I watch Greg not as an English teacher, but as an actor. As a teacher, he is mediocre, but an excellent actor. All his antics, grimaces, gestures, coupled with imperfect diction, raise my mood. I understand why he has not collected a million subscribers in 6 years. Because only connoisseurs of acting like me watch him)

Hi Greg,

That's a brilliant idea. Create a story to learn the group of words.
I was on my way to work yesterday. I was in a hurry. But there was an obstacle in the way. So I was too late in the office. My boss wasn't in the mood to understand this. Now I'm in trouble. On average I stay at home for 24 hours now. In fact, I don't need to be on time for the next months. So I can learn 50 common expressions with prepositions by heart by myself at home. By the time I see you next I'll want to be on business again. By the way, That's a great video. I like it.
Cheers.

Simply, clearly, understandably; thank you Greg. However, it's so easy to mix them up. At least many of them, I guess. I'll do my best using them.
We often use the word sharp here than the on the dot. Are they equal?
Świetny filmik, jestem ogromnie zaskoczony bo, puściłem go niby przypadkiem, jednak Twój sposób prowadzenia spodobał mi się na tyle, że zacząłem od dziś subskrybować kanał :-)

Good evening sir ❤️
Hi Greg,
Could you please explain the difference between 'that' , 'this' and 'it' in regular phrases like these: "Please describe this(that) event to me; That(this/it) was an unkind remark; It(this/that) is only a rumor".
Are there any nuances here or they are all exactly about the same?
I’ve been learning English since I was a kid as it is part of out education. It is one of the two official languages of my country - the Philippines. In 2020, I started learning Spanish (español Filipino and español de España). While doing so, I also started to improve my English skills. The accent I chose to learn was the American one. Currently, my English accent and pronunciation have improved significantly. However, will it be possible to switch my accent from American to British? Take note that my American English is still far from being perfect as I don’t use the language verbally that much. Also, considering that I already am used to speaking and imitating American pronunciations.
Do you have podcast for your book please.
Wasalam Brother
Hi Greg, thank you for the lesson. I can’t really understand why have i say I have to go and etc? Why can’t I say I need to go or I should to go. What’s difference?
Hi yar
From which country you living?
Sir, as there are 4 to 5 synonyms of a word, then what is the use of Pacho word in spoken word, then only we will be able to speak good English or understand while reading a book or remember any one word which is used a lot. Will be able to speak or understand English Sometimes I listen to a book or a ward of Spokane which I have never heard, I am very confused in this, I can't remember the vocab anyway? Sir tell me what should be done please 🙏🙏❤️❤️🙏🙏
Hi Greg and thanks a lot for your always-useful lessons. I have a doubt about the use of in/way with pronouns his-her-its... I mean, if I'm to say: "He's on HIS way .. or She's on HER way.. do those mean thas he/she are going to die?? Sorry, maybe it's only a stupid doubt of mine.. have a nice time and greatings from Italy!
Something in the way :D
hi Greg, how are you man? I hope you're fine. As usual your teachings have no price and I am grateful for that. I have a question for you, the original plan was: date first with a native speaker girl (American, English, Australian, etc) and then someday ask her but...I am here yet :/, so the question remains for you :), it's a question I've kept since I started listening to The Rolling Stones...here is the thing: is any difference between "wait on" and "wait for"? I am talking about the song "Waiting on a friend"
Well, you must be sleeping right now but I wish you have a nice weekend!

Hi Greg hw r u what's up hope to be you well 😘😘😘
By the way on the topic: 'BY myself' = 'ON my own'
Here's a story: On a hot evening , my parents were expecting me to arrive, very happy, I was ON the way to being born. But then as I was growin up, I I heard them saying they could be happy , but I was IN the way. By the way this story is fake, I am adorable.
im on the roof reading by myself
She stands in the way.
By the way , you better not stand in my way on my way back home !
I still little bit confused between in and on
when you fall in love so hard, that you don't need preposition, cause She IS the way...
By the way, when you going to grow some hair? It sounds so simple but i showed your video to my friend who was like omg, is he just from prison?
You need to be in on the decision.
Unfortunately, I'm paid by the hour, minimum wage. LOL
She's overly cautious by nature.
Sorry, couldn't help it. 😅
Nice six-head (I consider this a compliment, so not a hate comment)
Ah shit the prepositions are complicated
