1979 - I was 12, and I remember hearing this on the weekends when my parents were home during the day, and it would play on one of the local stations coming in from San Francisco. This takes me back to those amazing times, with a tear or two in my eyes.

Oh yeah hey! Great stuff here!
As a kid growing up in the, 50s-60s-70s. I love Herb Alpert. And when I got to fourth grade. I chose the trumpet. I loved the way he played. I had the album, the Lonely Bull. Loved it! Played it to death on my record player. Which was not a fine, hi-fi turntable. It was a kids transistorized record player. With a built-in speaker. A big, whole, 4 inch speaker! From which sound was emitted from. As one could not consider this, highfalutin fidelity. No. Crystal cartridge and 25 g of stylus pressure. Not 2.5 g. 25 g! Like the weight of a US quarter. On the end of your tone arm. Digging a new groove into the vinyl. From a signal of dust and dirt. That made you feel like you were at the movies. And could hear the popcorn popping coming from the snack bar. And a big load of popcorn!
And so this version of Rise. Obviously not mixed by Larry Levine. There is no finesse with this mix. It leaves me cold. And differs greatly. From the original. Both on vinyl and CD which I own. As I was in early adopter of, PCM digital recording technology. By 1983. And this recording is historic.
This recording was made on the early, 3M, 1 inch digital tape prototype. Of a 32 channel digital tape recorder. Utilizing 16 bits at a sampling rate of, 50 kHz.
What's notable here is… There were no, 16-bit encoders yet created. So they cascaded a 12 bit and 4 bit processor, together. Then they sampled at, 50 kHz. Meaning that the sound was sampled. Every 50,000 th, of a second. And not the, 44.1 kHz of the later, CDs nor the, 48 kHz. Later established for video. This was 50 kHz. And was said to be, the fineness sounding digital recorder, yet made. Up to that time.
It was also discovered this format, could not sustain, razor blade editing. As its analog brother of the past, could. So a second machine was created. Of 4 tracks. And was used. To create electronic edits. And then spooled back on to the 1 inch, 32 track master tape. Which made life very awkward with this, bleeding edge technology, machine. And required a full-time engineer to be present. To ensure its operation. To be near flawless.
That digital recorder back in the day I believe cost somewhere around, $150,000? Later lowered to something reasonable to about half that. Again only for the most wealthy or big-time record labels. And it was a cool, fussy, temperamental, machine and contraption. But the first of its digital multitrack kind. Developed with 3M of the US and UK. In association with, Roger Lagideck. From Studer of Switzerland. As a concerted effort was pushed.. To sort digital audio all out. As to what would be the minimal they can get by with. And still sound, decent. And in those earlier times. All they had was mathematical, PCM encoding and decoding. It's already fraught with problems and issues and sounds like, garbage. At any bit depth. At any sample rate. It will always sound like PCM. Because it is.
Later inroads to a better digital brought us, DSD or, Direct Stream Digital. The carrier encoding for the, now largely defunct, Super Audio CD! Which was a special, dual layer, CD. With the primary high resolution layer being DSD.-Requiring a special player. Costing about $1000.
And the second layer which was a standard, Redbook specified, 16-bit, 44.1 kHz sampling and 2 bit error correction. Gave us that harsh and gnarly CD sound. That's PCM. And it sounds like barf! Even at 24-bit. Even at 96 or 192 kHz, sampling. It still sounds like dog shit. Doesn't even deserve the bull. As that's higher-quality shit. But not PCM, no. That's low-quality. The lowest of the low in digital sound.
But nobody wants to pursue the much better sounding, DSD, digital streams. Because everybody is stupid and has lost their minds. With idiot audiophiles imagining they are hearing something that doesn't exist. As audiophiles do. Most a bunch of reaming, nincompoops. Talking model numbers and bragging about their, 500 pounds cement base. They had made for their turntable. To eliminate, any outside rumble. And so you can put that cement block over there. No. 3 inches further to the left. Now that's too far back. Move it forward a little more, please. What do you mean you can't move it? I have to move it? FUCK that! Give me digital! Or give me deat!
I shed no tears walking away from, a needle dragging through some dead bug slop. Pushed around by some black vinyl dinosaurs. And thinking cassette tapes sound groovy. No! No! No!!! Quadruple No! Never! Never did they sound good! Your, Sony, TEAC, Aikai, reel to reel tape recorders, maybe? Because who could afford a, Scully, Ampex, 3M or MCI much less a Studer? A stereo recorder cost as much as you are brand-new, Toyota did in, 1978. I should know. I worked for the company and owned, four of them myself. Instead of buying my house! Whoops. Big whoops.
All are having a good time until someone loses an eye.

Randy Badazz Alpert, one of the writers of "Rise" gave his blessing to Puff and Biggie to use the "Rise" groove.
      www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=4256
No theft by Biggie or Puff, but a knowledge and trust from Randy that his music could be a #1 hit again. Every time Biggie's version plays on the radio, the Alperts get paid.
Don't hate on the hip hoppers. In fact, they gave the original song exposure to the Gen X-ers, Millenials, and Post-Millenials.
