    A patient is considered to be a child between the age of one to the first signs of puberty (approximately 12-14 years of age). If the child is unresponsive and not breathing normally but has a pulse, rescue breathing should be performed at a rate of one breath every three seconds. After two minutes, check for a pulse. If there is no pulse present, begin CPR on this patient.

    One thing I would add... Be sure that when doing rescue breathing to not blow a full breath into the mask. He has a higher lung capacity, and too much air may cause the patient to get air into the stomach, thus vomit and aspirate, which is bad news. Great instructional video though. Everyone should know this who have children.

    Brilliant impression of drowning from our child actress here - silent flailing can be really hard to spot, especially in a crowded pool. I know a girl who sadly drowned because the lifeguard didn't spot the flailing, and then she got her hair caught in a wave machine. She was only 11.
    If you want to practice, search for 'Spot the drowning child' on a search engine.
    I'm surprised the modeller didn't do an airway obstruction check. With drowning, it's very unlikely that the child has choked on anything in the pool...it does occasionally happen though, little broken bits of a flotation device, bath toys, or ocean debris, for example. Worth a quick airway obstruction check if you are comfortable with that level of first aid.
    Final thought: This is not best practice, but; in an absolute emergency, if you do not wish to make skin contact with a stranger who requires CPR, a hole in a plastic bag can allow you to maintain no skin contact whilst also being able to administer rescue breaths. So much better to have a CPR shield though, much safer.

      What will happen is you get an AED and follow the directions given. It will analyse the heart rhythm of the patient. If it says "no shock advised", check for breathing, and then continue with CPR if there is no breathing. If "shock advised" it will allow you to deliver a shock with a button, and eventually after shocking and doing CPR, you may get a pulse and breathing back.

    They should say why you check for a pulse. You shouldn't do chest compressions if they have a pulse. You could stop their heart if you're not in the same rhythm as their heart. Which is more than likely you won't be.

    if their not breathing and they have a pulse would it be plausible they still have water in the lungs? Also, what the heck is with suggesting putting the mask on upside down? (i.e. don't suggest the wrong way)

    • @asmitaghorai7332
      @asmitaghorai7332 Před 2 lety

      He suggests placing the mask upside down in case it's an adult-sized mask you're using on a kid since that'll cover the mouth and the nose up, they won't be visible too.
