On one occasion, I met a half dozen Ethiopian Christians at St. Vartan Armenian Apostolic Church in Oakland, California. Their Priest did a Blessing Ceremony around the Holy Cross (Khachkar), at the church entrance.
I am not religious (I did grow up in the American Calvinist / Reformed tradition), but I have such a deep love for the liturgies of the Orthodox Church. There's nothing that makes me feel more like I'm experiencing the presence of God more than an incense-filled Vespers service on a Saturday evening.
The most moving Armenian Divine Liturgy that I have ever heard. God is love! My heart sings through prayer for the Armenian people. A people persecuted for their Christian faith for centuries. May they be vindicated once and for all.

He told me something wonderful and transcendent. Most would never believe his story but he opened to me a new reality of Jesus Christ that stuck with me during very dark days in my life. I am drawn to Armenian history because of this. Armenia has and is suffering much. I pray the fires of affliction would continue to refine and purify my brothers and sisters there so as the finest of the wheat would come forth. I love the duduk also. This is the most fantastic badarak I've ever heard in my life. Though I'm not ethnic Armenian, but the music of Vardapet Komitas has strongly united me with the Armenian nation, opened the treasures of it's culture, history and Armenian nature. I remember how these chants made me feel every single time I attended the Surp Kevork church as a child either to wear shabig, or play while my mom prayed and cleaned the church. In these moments I knew that something majestic and divine was going on, and I felt like nothing could harm us (we were crypto) while we were there because Asdvadz would protect us from any harm. I always got sad when we were about to go home, and always did inhale one more time before going home to at least being able to smell that beautiful incense smell again. Khorhoort Khorin sung at the start - the tenor soloist is exquisite. If you read the text of the Badarak (Divine Liturgy), it is awe inspiring, breathtaking at times. The prayers and sharagans (hymns) written by men but divinely inspired by the precious Holy Spirit and the Word of God.

Puede que al crearlo Komitas ya presagiara el drama feroz que se abatiría sobre su pueblo. Existen seres que a ellos solos ilustran una hecatombe colectiva. Si la historia de un solo individuo pudiera resumir la experiencia armenia de principios del siglo pasado, bastaría el músico archimandrita Komitas. Su talla me parece descomunal, como también lo fue su caída en el mutismo, puede que por haber asumido el sino de un pueblo errante que jamás dejó de soñar por un solar mítico cuyas fronteras solo el viento sabía. En mi vida he conocido armenios que pese haber nacido lejos de aquella tierra, esta seguía siendo un referente, hablando su vieja lengua y perpetuando saberes y rituales ancestrales sin por ello sentirse extranjeros allí donde moraban. Uno de ellos, joven restaurador en La Rochelle me habló por primera vez de Soghomon Soghomonian, alias Gomidas o Komitas, cuyo destino me pareció escalofriante. «En octubre de 1935 moría en el hospital psiquiátrico Villejuif de París, rodeado de un total anonimato, Komitas Vardapet, un nombre casi desconocido en la actualidad -si exceptuamos su presencia en Armenia-, pero al que Claude Debussy y Gabriel Fauré habían considerado uno de los grandes músicos de los inicios del siglo XX. Además de compositor, Komitas era un musicólogo excepcional que, a lo largo de sus viajes, había reunido un tesoro formado por 3.000 canciones armenias, kurdas, persas y turcas. Su labor fue imprescindible para recuperar la música tradicional en muchos de los territorios todavía dominados por el imperio otomano; y aunque su dedicación principal fue la música religiosa le debemos asimismo el establecimiento de puentes entre el legado tradicional y la creación moderna. Dotado de una voz excepcional, los coros que Komitas había dirigido causaron una honda impresión en el París anterior a la I Guerra Mundial. Sin embargo, esa voz excepcional cesó de repente en 1915, y la agonía se apoderó de Komitas Vardapet 20 años antes de su muerte física. I remember how these chants made me feel every single time I attended the Surp Kevork church as a child either to wear shabig, or play while my mom prayed and cleaned the church. In these moments I knew that something majestic and divine was going on, and I felt like nothing could harm us (we were crypto) while we were there because Asdvadz would protect us from any harm. I always got sad when we were about to go home, and always did inhale one more time before going home to at least being able to smell that beautiful incense smell again. Puede que al crearlo Komitas ya presagiara el drama feroz que se abatiría sobre su pueblo. Existen seres que a ellos solos ilustran una hecatombe colectiva. Si la historia de un solo individuo pudiera resumir la experiencia armenia de principios del siglo pasado, bastaría el músico archimandrita Komitas. Su talla me parece descomunal, como también lo fue su caída en el mutismo, puede que por haber asumido el sino de un pueblo errante que jamás dejó de soñar por un solar mítico cuyas fronteras solo el viento sabía. En mi vida he conocido armenios que pese haber nacido lejos de aquella tierra, esta seguía siendo un referente, hablando su vieja lengua y perpetuando saberes y rituales ancestrales sin por ello sentirse extranjeros allí donde moraban. Uno de ellos, joven restaurador en La Rochelle me habló por primera vez de Soghomon Soghomonian, alias Gomidas o Komitas, cuyo destino me pareció escalofriante. «En octubre de 1935 moría en el hospital psiquiátrico Villejuif de París, rodeado de un total anonimato, Komitas Vardapet, un nombre casi desconocido en la actualidad -si exceptuamos su presencia en Armenia-, pero al que Claude Debussy y Gabriel Fauré habían considerado uno de los grandes músicos de los inicios del siglo XX. Además de compositor, Komitas era un musicólogo excepcional que, a lo largo de sus viajes, había reunido un tesoro formado por 3.000 canciones armenias, kurdas, persas y turcas. Su labor fue imprescindible para recuperar la música tradicional en muchos de los territorios todavía dominados por el imperio otomano; y aunque su dedicación principal fue la música religiosa le debemos asimismo el establecimiento de puentes entre el legado tradicional y la creación moderna. Dotado de una voz excepcional, los coros que Komitas había dirigido causaron una honda impresión en el París anterior a la I Guerra Mundial. Sin embargo, esa voz excepcional cesó de repente en 1915, y la agonía se apoderó de Komitas Vardapet 20 años antes de su muerte física. El 24 de abril de 1915 Komitas, que era sacerdote de la iglesia armenia, fue arrestado en Estambul, ciudad en la que residía. En esa misma jornada siguieron su suerte un par de centenares de intelectuales y artistas armenios. Todos fueron enviados al norte de Anatolia Central, a 300 kilómetros de la capital, para, allí, ser detenidos en un campo de internamiento. Simultáneamente se desencadenó una represión masiva contra la comunidad armenia. Decenas de miles de personas fueron asesinadas en una campaña de exterminio étnico que no tenía precedentes. Hubo que esperar a la II Guerra Mundial y al horror desatado contra los judíos para que el crimen masivo tuviera mayores proporciones que el que, por iniciativa del Ejército otomano, diezmó al pueblo armenio» (Rafael Argullol ).
