  • 'lúbtha' is a short film inspired by true events and follows the story of a teenager dealing with his sexuality whilst having to grow up in early 90s Northern Ireland. As physical and mental abuse become a daily struggle, Fintan retreats into a world of anger and silence. With no solution on the horizon, he yearns to escape from the small town he’s been trapped in all his life, bringing nothing but his younger brother. As he comes closer to planning his journey to freedom, one night he is shown the reality of acceptance and love.

    I just watched this incredible short film “lúbtha” and found myself crying uncontrollably as I sit here this Sunday morning in Los Angeles, CA. What a wonderful and powerful film. I was that boy growing up. My parents are Eastern European immigrants and they were not going to have a gay son either and they did their best to make me as miserable and doubtful of my human existence and feelings as possible. It was not till I was 25 years old that I would have my first open conversation about being gay with my mom on the phone as she phone me first to wish me a happy birthday and then followed by a direct question “are you one of those gay people?” To which I choked, felt all the air suck into my lungs, silence in the world, and I felt the revolution of the earth as it spun... I said yes... to which my ears were met with a shriek or a howl, some type of an incredible animalistic scream and joined by a “Why????????” Followed by a diatribe and a vicious monologue of how she had failed as a mother, spoiled me as a son, my father ruined me by being too weak and absent and how she was destroyed by her failings as a mother. After her selfish and self-absorbed rant was over, she hung up. That was 27 years ago. On April 21. Happy birthday to me. I was in my kitchen of the new apartment I had just moved into not one month earlier with my first boyfriend. Thank you for sharing this wonderful film with the world and thank you for showing me and other boys and girls out there who may be struggling with their own families resenting their sexuality or being made to feel less than or something less than normal. I wished I had CZcams or the web growing up. It was an incredibly lonely time to grow up gay. Lonely at school. Lonely at work. Lonely in life. I am so grateful for filmmakers such as you for telling these Incredibles powerful stories and for being a beacon or helpful guide for so many young gay boys and girls around the world. We are not abnormal. We are not less than. We are all going to be ok as long as we can get away from these deranged and confused people who are selfish and not caring of us as people as they are of themselves and how others will view them for having a gay son or daughter. My mom and father do not speak to me anymore. They gave up trying to change me and when they realized I was not going to get out of this “phase“ of dating men they just gave up. The clincher was last year when my mother said to my face that all gay people were “inherently evil“... I knew at that point that she was too far gone and that a meaningful relationship or any closeness would never be possible. My father is absent as he moved to Ecuador to get away from the America he fought so hard to escape to. I’ve not seen or heard from him in over 5 years. Thank you for sharing this with the world and happy new year to you and everyone involved with your films. Grateful for you and your passion for truth and impactful storytelling.

I was really worried when I realized the era in which it was set, but instead of going the typical depressing route you did the opposite. Not that everything was portrayed as completely happy, there were obviously still obstacles to deal with, it was just left on a positive note where you could believe that ultimately it was going to be OK. So, thanks for that.

      I can totally understand what that means and how heartfelt it is. Straight people don't get it they don't get how even today from the law enforcement and every other thing for us who are gay it seems like in every avenue of being it's okay for men and women to have these places where they can meet up and find each other. But for us especially in the town I am in right now it's petty larceny to try and do the same because it's sexual prowling like in the same way as the people who are doing like the hookers and their cohorts. Always shutting down the avenues for us to meet new people and see if they're compatible.

      Random Artist could you explain how it isn’t normal to want a form of sex? because i’m a little confused...

    • @randomartist751
      @randomartist751 Před 4 lety

      kouya rose because sex is made for a male and a female. It’s also made for making children which only men and female can do. Women and women have different reproduction systems and parts for a reason. A man isn’t designed to have sex with another man and a woman isn’t designed to have sex with another woman.

    • @randomartist751
      @randomartist751 Před 4 lety

      kouya rose and nothing is meant to go up your butt. Only out. It can hurt really bad and that’s not what the anus is designed for.

    • @infestedribcage
      @infestedribcage Před 4 lety +6

      Random Artist sex isn’t necessarily made for a specific pair. sex is an act, not a ritual between man and woman specifically. yes, sex is used to reproduce. but sex is also for personal pleasure and can be bent to fit your needs/wants. a man taking it up the ass is just as normal as hetero, vanilla sex. and i’m not sure who told you nothing is supposed to go up your rear but... there are literal doctors probing a different mans rectum every day to make sure everything is healthy. if anal wasn’t safe, doctors would be warning people of it, not telling them to simply wrap it up. :/

  • @mcmanpa

    Ethan McDowell’s “lubtha” is heavy on the coarse demeaning transactions in the family life of teenage schoolboy Fintan (sharply played by Oliver Scullion). Only school friend Caelan (Conor Gormally) offers a less abrasive comity. The ending proposes a better future, but if the entry to that future is only gained by first consuming copious amounts of alcohol, we can only hope that both boys survive and live to see it.

    • @adamantsun
      @adamantsun Před 5 lety +6

      Copious? Please, they had a few shots. I'm 53. I came of age in the gay bars in the 80s. It was the only place we had to meet each other, there was no internet. For many of us, we learned to hold our booze because you can't sit there in a bar for hours unless you are spending money, yet to meet people "like you', you had to be in the bar. So you drank and you learned to control it. Many people didn't though, it became a way to escape from facing who they were. I forget where I was going with this. Something about booze. And gay men. Sigh. I'm distracted. But you get my point. If the sex ain't good at least you got the booze to fall back on. Or vice versa.

    • @mcmanpa
      @mcmanpa Před 5 lety +5

      @@adamantsun I get your point. (And I also got your unedited post. ps your secret is safe with me) My point was that alcohol is not a reliable doorway to self-acceptance; to the contrary, those uninhibited by booze eventually wake up to sober truths, recrimination & retreat: rinse, repeat. (I’ll spare you my story; I don’t seek a bragging rights contest of voluntarily disclosed self-abuse.) Perhaps we’re making the same point after all.

      GrotrianSeiler Normal is just what the majority of a peoples do. It’s used to describe the predictable and expected. That’s why normal will ALWAYS exist. But that doesn’t mean that what is normal right now will always be. What is normal changes everyday, little by little, just as people change. So it could be that being gay and openly holding hands with your same-sex partner will be very normal in a decade from now. Here’s hoping!🤞🏼Cheers!🍻

    • @kjohns5139
      @kjohns5139 Před 5 lety +3

      I use the word "NATURAL" to describe myself and my feelings, attractions and sexuality. It has nothing to do with "NORMAL" that is a collective word...what the majority feels, thinks, and does. "NATURAL" is a personal word. Each of us live and love based on who we are individually, not collectively. "Conformity (normal), is human, but diversity is divine." We were created to be different, individual, diverse...uniquely ourselves.
