Brent O'Brien I heard THAT, I also agree with Whoopi, as much as I love her acting ability on TV and Films, she wasn't fit to be a Hollywood Square and King World letting her be the Executive Producer didn't do wonders either, but when The Fonz took over as Producer, it got better and Martin Mull becoming the Center Square for the Final Year was a good idea and it felt Old School with him, but yes, Peter knew how to keep the Squares in check and Tom did that, too, but as for Johnny D., he let them go on and on and on and let them get out of control like JM J. Bullock and that's probably one of the reasons why Merrill Heatter called The NEW Hollywood Squares w/John Davidson a circus

T-Bone Hubbard I wasn't a Tom B. fan., but he knew how to keep control. Also, I get tired of these entertainers telling us how to live and how to think when they don't do certain things themselves. For ex., drive a economical car. I'd see facts in that point, but where I live, Spokane, WA., you need something for year around, 4WD that can be put back into 2WD. Thankfully, I have an F-150. Not great gas milege, but when winter times comes, its a great tool to have, when used properly. I call it my space ship.

It ran on NBC daytime from the Fall of 1966 until June 20, 1980, when Fred Silverman put The David Letterman Show on in its place for an ill-fated, 4-month run. Hollywood Squares would be resurrected in later years and be hosted by such names as John Davidson, Tom Bergeron, etc. I think Shadoe Stevens of Federated Group fame was the announcer at some point. The show, in my opinion, really wasn't worth watching after Marshall's stint ended in June 1980.

I CAN DEFINITELY RELATE!! THIS CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD SQUARES THEME TAKES ME BACK TO MY CHILDHOOD IN THE TWIN CITIES MPLS.ST.PAUL MN FROM 7-1-1974-5-15-1981 FROM AGES 2 UNTIL 9 YEARS OLD.I REMEMBER BEFORE THE MARCH 5 1979 NETWORK SWITCH--Hollywood Squares would come on in the morning on KSTP TV CH.5 when it was originally NBC BUT the nighttime syndicated Squares would air on KMSP TV CH.9 when it was still ABC.However March 5 1979 THE GREAT TWIN CITIES NETWORK SWITCH!!--KSTP TV CH.5 WAS NOW ABC & WTCN TV CH.11 was now NBC!!--before it was independent Metromedia 11!!--& finally KMSP TV CH.9 BECAME INDEPENDENT. CBS stayed with WCCO TV CH.4 & PBS STAYED WITH KTCA TV CH.2 & KTCI TV CH.17.I didn,t start school until Sep.1980 until May 1981 before me & my parents moved to Baltimore Md.Hollywood Squares now aired on WTCN TV CH.11 (KARE TV) in the morning before the daytime show left in June 1980.Nigjtime Squares continued to air on KMSP TV CH.9 even when they filmed their final.year in Las Vegas.Myself and my mother Lois Ann Routhier 10-28-1934-5-6-1984 & father Phillip Anthony Routhier 9-17-1924-8-6-2001 lived at 1182 Selby Ave.St.Paul Mn.Dad was a roofer who worked for 2 roofing companies--JOHN A.DALSIN AND SONS(1975-78) & RAINVILLE CARLSON ROOFING CO.(1978-81) Mom was a stay at home mom(RIGHT!-OKAY!!) I went to J.J.HILL SCHOOL September 1980 -May 1981 & I.d remember watching Squares at 6pm 2 or 3 hours after coming home from school & doing my homework & afterwards drawing pictures of Squares.(aside from drawing our old house & the buses that I use to watch going back & forth passed our house & Dad,s car) I remember Dad driving 🚘 his 1968 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser Station wagon which he had for 7 years until after we moved to Baltimore (1976-83) & put 180,000 miles on that car & not once did it burn a drop of oil

I can even remember my own mother Lois Ann Routhier 10-28-1934-5-6-1984 telling me that when she carried me on the day I was about to be born April 12th 1972 & when Dad had to take her to the 🏥 hospital--earlier that morning she was watching The Hollywood Squares.I was.born in Santa Rosa California at WARRICK HOSPITAL which of course now is SANTA ROSA GENERAL HOSPITAL at 4.20 pm.I have no memory of California or New Mexico-I have only memories of my 1st childhood home The Twin Cities Mpls.St.Paul Mn from 1974-81 from ages 2-9 years of age & My 2nd childhood home of almost 43 years in Baltimore Md.

RIP!! GENE BETH.STEEL & THE HOLLYWOOD SQUARES‐-ORIGINAL!@😢😮😢😮

In my lifetime, the first time I heard of the game was the Tom Bergeron era. I didn't discover John Davidson's era until later on in life; however, while they each have good things about them, they don't top the original version with Peter Marshall, and Paul Lynde in the center square, making everybody laugh so hard. (The Davidson era had a killer theme tune, though; kudos to Stormy Sachs for writing it; he also wrote the music to "Caesars Challenge" if I am not mistaken, also using a saxophone lead for that one.)
Peter once said he refused to appear on any of the shows with Whoopi Goldberg because he thought they were way too crude in tone. However, she was a vital part of the popularity, and so when she left, the ratings dropped with it.

The middle parts where they hit the high notes on the horn and keyboard solos remind me of the "Soul Bossa Nova" by Sam cook. The one you hear in the "Austin Powers" movies. It's such a lively tune! It seems like it would be a hit song back in the day but now it would be too good to fit in anywhere, except a "Hip Hop" playlist. It's a real toe-tapping tune.
