It'd be cool if that was an actual feature and it was like a "pandora's box" that spawns a bunch of mobs at once.
The spawn egg is just like a base item like example if the developers are gonna make a new mob it would be much easier instead starting at scraps or stealing other spawn eggs code which would result to bugs and errors so yeah they basically use it to make brand new spawn eggs for mobs easier.
Basically like Unity people use it because it's much easier than making ur own codes same for modders that's why they make more things than the devs does and they don't have to worry about bugs because they rely on the game itself not their own.

Occasionally I tried to use commands back in very old versions of Minecraft, and I'd end up trying to /give myself items that were supposed to have NBT data attached to them and get these weird empty things. Ah, the nostalgia.

@@LordZandaurgh the player's model is in game and using the commands you can modify a spawn egg to spawn that model, however because the player mob doesn't exist it crashes the game. By changing the game files i'm pretty sure you can modify it to work though, then you'd get a player-like mob that has the same ai as a villager

I remember getting one of those default spawn eggs in early 1.12 console edition. No commands, no clue how I did it.
I actually used the "Spawn" item before, after realising that it was unable, I used them in a skyblock to spawn any mob that a player wanted.

I think another way to get it pre 1.13 is to install a mod with new mobs and then uninstall the mod. The game freaks out and leaves you with the blank egg.

I remember in like 1.18 there was an unknown spawn egg that looked like the egg in the thumbnail, but it said some weird words that said some command stuff, it started with the word “spawn”
I recently bought Minecraft bedrock on the Nintendo switch, and while I was playing through the Super Mario mash-up pack, I found a strange looking spawn egg, it looked like a chicken spawn egg, but you couldn't use it at all you could still carry it and drop it, and it did all the things an item would do, but it didn't work, and the strangest thing, is it was called "item.spawn_egg". I'm not sure why it appeared, but it seemed to me it looks like a bug. It didn't even appear in your recipes, and was impossible to get without going into the mash-up and finding it in a dispenser.

I actually found a wither spawn egg in the Nintendo Switch Super Mario themed world, in one of the many dispensers around the themed areas. It was... weird. Same went for its name- definitely not the usual 'Spawn [mob name]'. But, it functioned properly, and I could very well say that it's one of the few "naturally-generated" items that can't be found anywhere else- not even the Creative menu.
However, I still need to find the structure and dispenser in question in another version of that world to prove this egg's existence... I will come back here when I find it.

There was a time that an empty spawn egg could crash Minecraft Bedrock.
That item is added because of mods. On 1.12 and earlier, when i had modded Minecraft save, and opened it without mods, all spawn eggs has been replaced with that empty "Spawn:" egg.

Fun fact: in earlier versions, the type of spawn egg depends on the number value you put in the command (number after quantity), and eggs with no entity would crash the game if used on a mob spawner. fun fact with that spawn egg in pocket edition you can put it in a spawner and it would put the lightning entity in the spawner at full size not mini like when you put mobs in spawners and if you placed 5 on top of each other the spinning of the lightning made it look like a lightning tornado
In bedrock you only need to put a number which represents which entity your going to get unlike java you have to put complicated letters and etc.
