An Introduction to U.S. Land Records

Land records form the largest group of records for our ancestors and often leave the only clues to marriages, deaths, and relationships. This video will offer an introduction to U.S. land records: how to locate them, what to look for, and what you might find.
We will briefly cover the original distribution of land and discuss the differences between state land states and federal land states and the laws governing land distribution. After land moved from federal ownership to individual ownership, the transfer of property was handled at the local level-primarily by the counties-using deeds.
