      The raises a question: can Echidnas and Numbats eat fire ant or are they poisonous to them? Because they already eat ants and termites so they could be use to stop the ants from overpopulating any further.

    Bruh, Sicily is in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea... Really close to a desert area. It was only natural to appear there at some point. Only to us this is strange, to them it's just migration. edit: And the problem is that if they find some solution to this problem, they won't kill just the fire ants, but also the rest of the ants because pesticides don't discriminate species. That's the saddest part.

      If it found its way onto an island, it can find its way onto the mainland.
      If you eradicate all ants in a Fire Ant zone, local species will refill the power vacuum overtime. If you don't eradicate Fire Ants they enslave other ants but have no use for their Queens, so your local species are at threat of extinction over time.

    In Australia, the government fire ant erradication program uses a combination of S-Methoprene, Pyripoxyfen, and Indoxacarb. The Queensland government have had the most success in the irradiation containment and control of the Red Imported Fire Ant.

    After not heeding warnings from America, the Queensland Government in Australia was slow to react & are now spending millions on the problem.
    I was hoping when I say this report, the Government there would mobilise faster but I guess governments everywhere are lethargic by nature. In Australia, Fire Ants seem to be migrating toward cooling climates to our south, so I'm guessing in that part of the world those to the North of Italy (& Europe) have the most to be concerned about.

  • @ellenbryn
    @ellenbryn Před 10 dny

    Oh no. The EU had better jump on this fast or it will be too late to stop the spread, just like a virus. and it's not just plants they hurt.
    I remember my Texas granddad doing some maintenance on a mailbox post, when a huge nest of fire ants that had moved in after he collected the mail that morning all came boiling up from the ground and stinging him.
    Fire ants are named for their bites that burn like fire, not for their color . I realize now the shock could've killed him- he had a bad heart, and heart attacks tended to kill the men in his family.
    I just looked up Texas fire ants to make sure they were the same species, and not only are they the same ones, but they aren't native to Texas either. but they are the main snt in the area now. Not only that, but when there's floods, fire ant nests all hook together and make rafts with their bodies, alternwtely crawling on top to breathe with the queen and eggs protected inside, so one of the hazards of flooding in Texas are these angry, flailing, aggressive mats of stinging fire ants bobbing along in the floodwaters searching for something to grab onto.

Btw, nice Asian weaver ants, if you need stock footage in future get in touch! Tell the rose grower to remove the aphids from her roses and the ants will move on, they’re there for the sticky aphid food not her prized roses!
