As for throwing water on the crowd it is old tradition of this festival. It's in the middle of a summer and it gets really really hot, especially in that crowd, so once in a while they use a water cannon or even a firebrigade truck to cool people down a little bit.

According to police estimates, there were over 210,000 people at the concert, while according to the organizers there were between 500,000 and 700,000.
