Let me preface my comments about this "re-edit" by saying that I'm a 48 year old comic book, video game, science fiction/horror life long fanatic and I am not embarrassed at all to admit those facts. With all of that being established... John Carpenter's The Thing is far and away my very favorite movie that I've ever seen and I have seen thousands of movies in my life... and I've most likely watched and rewatched the Thing at least 15-20 times in my life and it never gets old. However; when I stumbled upon this short re-edit of my favorite move I started watching it with little to no expectations that I'd even get halfway through it.... but the longer I watched it.... the more that I laughed...and laughed. Thank you for helping this 48 year old, disabled, paraplegic United States Marine, devil dog, shock troop to experience some genuine and out loud laughter so early in the morning today. Much appreciated. I love how it seems that most of this re-edit is of MacReady determined to burn all of the other crew members. "Gotta burn the rest of 'em". Also the scene where they autopsy of the large Thing amalgam is being done and then it cuts right to Bennings grimacing as Copper is giving him is four stitches stitches as if the Thing amalagam was actually Bennings' body where he was grazed by the bullet. Too funny. Then MacReady says "Hey Copper come here" and Copper is walking down the corridor of the burned out Norwegian base and then immediately sees Mac holding the shotgun and Copper is backing back away. MacReady cuts loose with the pump shotgun and then... "Good shot MacReady". Rotflmao. I must've rewound and watched that scene three or four times and then right after that when Copper says "Lemme do it you're gonna break the needle off in my arm" to which Childs says "No Doc... he's doing a real fine job" and then the needle is inserted into his arm and Copper is screaming in agony (not from the needle of course but from his arms being bitten off by the jagged teeth in the belly/mouth but only a Thing nut like myself would know that). Once again... great seque way from one non-sequitur scene to another. Childs then says "I just cannot believe any of this Voodoo bullshit" and Mac replies "then I'll have to kill ya Childs" to which Childs retorts "Then kill me". Cut directly to Mac looking all serious as he aims the pistol "I mean it" as he fires off the flamethrower and a stumbling and burning human torch crashes through the wall and Childs states it apparently mild amazement " I guess you do". Too rich. Gary says "I guess you guys would feel safer if someone else were in charge" and Childs says "I'll take it" reaching for the revolver but he's beaten to the gun by MacReady who replies "I think there should be someone a little more even tempered Childs". Then immediately, Mac shoots the dog handler right in the brain pan. Perfect cinematic pacing and timing. LOL! Mac is running and running and running down the corridor and then get's burned by Childs and Mac says "You asshole". Right after that Childs is yelling "You're a dead man Macready or whatever you are" as he is chopping the door down. Childs kicks in the door and there Mac is, holding up a flare and a bundle of dynamite. "Anyone messes with me and the whole camp goes. Come on Childs.... Burn me." Mac states as if daring Childs to be so obtuse as to listen to him. A second later the entire base violently explodes! Once again I must've played this 20 seconds several times.... laughing all the while. I would've NEVER in a million years thought of the Thing as a comedy of any sort or even funny at all beyond when Mac get's angry with the Chess Wizard and pours his drink into it muttering "Cheatin' Bitch".....but this video has giving me some much needed laughs this morning. Thank you to the editor/creator for spending the time to make the Thing as funny as it is horrific.

And we started musing on how the film might look if you simply removed the alien organism altogether. That triggered a set of lunatic thoughts about how an experiment had gone wrong at the research base, leaving everyone with the capacity for body regeneration, and a subsequent cavalier approach to danger, with boredom triggering casual violence on a daily basis. In our heads MacReady was the most feared and ruthless of them all, with a special punishment alarm that he activated every time a major beating was on the cards. Anyway, we created the original version of “The MacReady” on school video edit decks in 1991, and I decided to recreate it digitally ten years ago. It’s the small, odd things that please me the most, such as: “Somebody got to the blood!” “I suppose...someone could have lifted it off me.”
Imagine having lunch at a diner with Childs. *Childs opens up his sandwich, removes a slice of cheese and holds it up on display.* Childs: "If this was an imitation - a perfect imitation - how would you know if it was really brie?"
That was the funniest thing I’ve seen in ages: tears rolling down my cheeks. Over 40 years of loving ‘The Thing’ but this was a fresh, new and definitely hilarious edit. Some of Russell’s maniacal,laughing from the Special Features in his conversations w/ Carpenter would’ve added some levity, but maybe that could be added to the criminally short ‘sit-com’ version…
@diccolopick It's actually a near-perfect movie for mashups, because the score is very minimalist (and used sparingly), and most of the film takes place in a small number of locations, meaning it's easy to splice together shots from many different moments in the film.
been meaning to make a mashup of the Thing, i didn't think it could be done with this holy grail of a film but you, sir, have proven me wrong. Guess I gotta give it a go now

Could have done with some editing out here and there, and pity you couldn't have gotten rid of the Norwegian LoKK sign on the side of the helicopter to read MAC 1, but can only work with what you have, and this is really good. The shot of Copper in reverse after MacReady calls him into see the empty ice block, made me proper laugh. Any more of these in the pipeline?
I haven't seen this mashup yet. But according to the video description, it had been posted for at least a year now. Nice. I was thinking about making another Thing comedy video......but I want to rent to movie for better quality. Usually I just extracted the movie clips off of CZcams and edited them...and that's really inefficient.
