Why shoot foxes?
The British red fox is widespread across the whole of mainland Britain and Ireland. The best estimate of the current British fox population is 240,000 adults in spring, to which a production of 425,000 cubs is added annually. The fox has no natural predator and for the population to remain stable, 425,000 foxes must therefore die each year.
Fox numbers need to be managed and controlled to prevent the predation of lambs, piglets reared outdoors, free range and domestic poultry. Foxes can also have a significant impact on vulnerable species of ground nesting birds such as black grouse, partridge, lapwing and curlew (Bealey, Green, Robson, Taylor & Winspear, 1999).
In order to protect such species while they are breeding, conservators and gamekeepers aim to control fox numbers, particularly from late winter to early summer. Foxes are also controlled around pheasant and partridge rearing and release pens in late summer and autumn. Overall, the direct cost to UK agriculture from fox predation has been estimated at £12 million annually (UK Government figures)

I am happy these guys are so open about the fact that this is sports to them. This is fun and exciting, AND they do a service for the farmer and keep poison out of the ecosystem.
I have met moose hunters and wolf hunters (Sweden) who almost pretend they don't like hunting bur insist that what they do is strictly necessary to maintain a good balance in the ecosystem and keep traffic accidents down and keep moose from eating the saplings in the newly planted forest and they'll come up with endless arguments for being the most heroic and misunderstood people in society.
And then they post pictures of themselves, posing with game they shot. It is redicilous. Just admit that you do this because you enjoy it...
It is sport, first and foremost, and it is totally OK to think that this is exciting and fun. Just like those dogs.

Bedlingtons are EXCELLENT ratters. We had one and he would take off across a field like a guided missile. He'd hit a rat or rabbit so hard he'd tear them in half most times. Part in his mouth and half not moved from there it was sat.

I have a part patterdale terrier, I discovered after I found out he kills rats and cats on our property here in Hawaii. He has longer legs and is larger than the purebreds. RESCUE dog, my cousin told me Koa's breed after he saw him.

I love ferrets. Takes me back to the days when I used to go out rabbiting with granddad in the badlands of the 'Black Country', England. Old Shagger, the ferret was my favourite. When I get a tan I still sport a tracery of white scars on my hands due to Shagger's tender 'kisses'. Sadly, I'm in exile these days and my adopted country of New Zealand does not allow ferrets. Flaxen Saxon.
