Great reaction sir! Zero complaints for sure. Nothing you said is wrong. I have followed YOYOKA for years and met, and spent time with her on multiple occasions when she came to Las Vegas to perform. In fact, I attended the recording session of Led Zepplin's "The Ocean" she did with EllenPlaysBass, a phenomenal 9 y.o. bass player. Found out Ellen and her father live less than 2 miles from me and I have remained friends with Ellen's father. She is literally just an all around great human, which is why Newsweek Japan voted her one of the top 100 Most Respected Japanese in the world at age 11, the same year that DrummerWorld added her to their Top 500 Drummers OF ALL TIME list. ! The scary part is, as great as she already is, she seems to improve almost weekly! Geeeeezzzz! She has even done some live streams recently, taking requests for songs she has never heard of and playing them like she's been playing them for months or years. Just for fun, go back and watch your reaction video, and look solely at her feet. It's insane! Never seen anyone than can literally make their feet look like they are floating almost in slow motion. Never seen a drummer with such smooth and efficient foot, hand, arm, wrist movements. Many drummers look like they're straining to get through a song, even the best drummers of all time. You might enjoy this next clip. czcams.com/video/d1Z3fZsIkvI/video.html This is YOYOKA making E-Drums sound like no one else can! Having fun and being goofy, as we love her! Play from 36:24 to 43:50 (7:26 total), It will start in the middle of one song and carry directly into a second song. Crazy fills and over plays the end of the first song, like it's nothing. This is an awesome demonstration of what her loyal fans call "THE YOYOKA EFFECT", where she can literally make any song she covers better than the original. Of course she has original work and in fact is currently working on a full album. She has not given details, but I think it will be all or mostly original works. We can't wait! Thanks for the reaction.

@@namorlam Indeed! She hasn't said much about it yet. Initially, she said she was working on it and wanted to have it out by her 15th B'Day (Oct 12). Then, when asked about it later, she was back pedaling a bit, kind of alluding to, it will be ready when it's ready. Which is totally fine, no need to rush it. Really, glad she has even mentioned it. With her schedule, not even sure how she has time to do it, and of course it has to be "perfect". Sounded like it was a full album. Not sure.

  • @gbulmer
    @gbulmer Před 5 měsíci +11

Great reaction. I think Yoyoka started off with some very high-quality genetics, an environment that enabled her to discover her 'passion' at a very young age (about 1½), and experiment, learn and create. A special ingredient is her fantastic parents. One unusual aspect was they wanted her to be 'normal' and so *restricted* how much time she could spend each day on the drums to about ½hour/day. (I assume her physiology was exceptional too.)
So, she did not have a drum teacher, or much time each day to play. So she invented her own solutions to thinking about drumming at the same time as she was learning to speak Japanese. You can see her use some of the thinking 'tools' she invented in her "Drum Course' which she started when she was 6yo.
If her parents claim that she only had ½hour/day from 2yo until she was 9yo is true, then she got very, very good within just over 1200 hours. That is well below the threshold researchers in the field claim is needed for "full competence" (2000 hours), and she was coping with her body changing size and shape at the same time.
I suspect her enthusiasm about playing live was partly her inspired approach to getting more drumming-time than her ½hour/day practice time at home. Even then, she was much better than the overwhelming majority of adults with comparable experience, while growing up.
Assuming she is pretty normal, she likely lost access to her pre-5yo memories by the time she was 8-9yo. However, I guess what she invented or discovered are still there operating at a level almost unconsciously, like the machinery we use to formulate thoughts. I don't think about formulating thoughts, I just do that.
Fortunately, she also invented or discovered very efficient ways to drum. I theorise she knew the sound she wanted, but her body was too small and weak (at 2-5yo) to get that sound the way an adult might. So she likely invented (more accurately independently discovered) ways her small frame could get the sound she wanted. Those techniques have become big assets. She can get the sound she wanted with the strength, energy and resources that a self-motivated 5yo can develop. She genuinely boggles my mind.
I suspect, but will likely never know, she has the reflexes, limb control, and balance to be a very good 'reflex sport' player. By that I mean, she might have become a great Badminton player. She has very fast hands, accurately and repeatedly hits within a fraction of an inch, and always seems to be relaxed and balanced, and can play for hours.
I estimated how many toddlers the entire human race creates each year who might be capable of being Yoyoka. It was a bit like the Drake equation for estimating how many planets have intelligent species. It is far from precise, but I estimated a few toddlers each year, to a few years to get each one. I theorise there are many factors or obstacles to be overcome. Some of the factors we have no control over without utterly barbaric practices.
However, I SWAG some of the factors we could control, if only we could understand what they are, and what to do.
Yoyoka was invited to collaborate with a University in Tokyo, helping them understand "creativity". AFAIK, she didn't pursue that much. A bit of a shame, but it's her life.
Please never be angry about how much better Yoyoka is at what she loves. Only take joy in what human beings can become. See Yoyoka as 'a data point' on the high part of a graph, or an existence proof. Even if only 0.1% of children developed their passions as thoroughly, and to as high a level, as Yoyoka, I believe the human race would remove obstacles, and improve life for the vast majority, in a few generations. Yoyoka is important, precious, evidence.
Meanwhile, let's encourage and support her developing her talents.
I hope she's still enjoying playing music in the 22nd century. I imagine her great grand children asking her what she was doing when she was 8yo, and feeling very proud and inspired by her answer. 😂 🧓=😎
One of my favourite Yoyoka videos is _Onyx - ... (Senri Kawaguchi) ...ー”...” / Seven year old drummer ”Yoyoka"_ Her performance is wonderful, though AFAICT, it is simplified a little from Senri Kawaguchi's original. However, the audience reaction after she's finished, and it is soaking in what they've just seen, is the best part. 😂🤣

I'm so very glad I stumbled upon her and if my videos will help others to experience her gift than I'll be very happy. P.S. My 'anger' was really just a comment made in jest. As he eludes, all the factors in her brilliance have merged to produce this unique, wonderful human- innate talent, awesome liberal parents, musical friends, treated as a person, Japanese culture, etc. She did have some formal drum lessons, as you can see from her Drum Lessons in English series (drums and learning English with a great tutor). @@RockandRollRelic I think people get a little ahead of themselves when it comes to Yoyoka Soma. Don't get me wrong, she's an incredibly talented and capable professional drummer and at 14 she's still just getting started. However, you have to keep in mind that for as good as she is, she's LITERALLY been playing her entire life. So, this video (she was actually 13 here by the way) comes at the expense of 11 and 1/2 years of drumming experience by this point. Yes, she's talented, yes she has innate ability and she is a remarkably poised drummer. But she's also been playing for an amount of time that spans most decent drummers professional careers. Don't factor that out. Because for as good as she is she didn't just crawl out of bed 6 years ago, hop on kit and bang out "Good Times, Bad Times". She had 6 and 1/2 years of drumming under her belt at that point. It seems so incredible because she's still so young, but she started at 1 and 1/2 and hasn't stopped since. So, please never forget that she worked her tail off to be this good. All that reincarnation talk on your "Burn" reaction video sounds flattering for as hyperbolic as it was. But it's dismissive in the end, even though I know that wasn't your intention. She's not the reincarnation of anybody. She's the first, last and only her. Let her achievements be the product of her effort and not the portent of some drummers ghost channeling through her.

I think you need to revise your accessement of Yoyoka. You could say that she is a child prodigy, but she is beyond that. If you really look at Yoyoka and understand her, she is a young adult. She is, also, a professional musician and has thousands of hours of stage time.
Playing drums is one thing, but playing drums live is another. She plays to live music as easily as she does to covers. Most people really do not know how difficult it is to get the acoustics right for a live show or even to a cover. Yoyoka is, for the time being, her own drum tech. Her understanding of tuning her drums and then blending the volume into the music is, also, a special talent.
You have not posted any of her live performances which are really spectaular.

This one is really ironic as Karen Carpenter is considered one of the top 500 drummers in the world. Most people think that most drummers perform on the studio version of their songs, which is not always true. Hal Blaine was the drummer who laid down the basic groove of this song. On the top 500 drummer list, there are only thirteen female drummers on this list. Karen Carpenter is one of them and so is Yoyoka. Senri Kawaguichi is the best female drummer in the world, with Yoyoka right next to her. Senri is from Japan and about ten years older than Yoyoka and was the youngest drummer ever to be on this list until Yoyoka turned eleven when she was added to this list. She nails this song as if she were the studio drummer.

Here is a recent video of Yoyoka performing at the Whiskey a GOGO and you can see who she is performing with. You can see that Yoyoka is readily accepted by other professional musicians three or four times her age. She has mastered her click to the point that there isn't a musician out there who doesn't want to perform with her. She is always in the pocket and driving on the click to make any band sound the best that they possibly can.

You never know who Yoyoka is going to be up on stage with.
    czcams.com/video/T5hPkB6D-qU/video.html
Always remember, this is Yoyoka's roots as when she was interviewed by Ellen, the first time, and was asked if she had ever performed in a bar. Her answer, at eight years old, that she had performed in bars over 150 times.
    czcams.com/video/agW6LpJhh60/video.html
She became the official drummer for her family band when she was five. She put in her dues performing at weddings, bars, various gigs, sleeping in hotels, many thankless venues and nights sleeping away from home to get to where she is now.

A couple of things... thank you so much for taking the obvious time to send me this very involved, detailed comment. I will do my best to showcase the areas of her brilliance that you mention. Only wish I had more time! I'm not sure I could be more respectful and complimentary of her and her abilities. I realize that I'm relatively new to Yoyoka - but everything I've seen of her absolutely blows my mind and I hope that that comes across in my videos.

Yoyoka is almost like a machine with the way she has furthered her career, especially, during covid. She has yet to let anything stop her or get in her way. When covid came around, it didn't stop her. She managed to find a workaround and ran over top of covid. Having to deal with covid would be enough to discourage anyone or substantially slow them down. Just bear in mind that her being where she is in life is kind of due to her. Her parents have enabled her, but they have not pushed into where she is or are not parents who try to live through what their kid does. Here is an example of what she was doing during covid.
      czcams.com/video/0b5hdiOjupo/video.html
She is very creative and has been in a number of commercials, two Nike commercials, a Nissian commercial, SuperWoman commercial, Lego commercial, a few others including a couple clothing contracts. Here is a recent interview which will give you some insight.
      czcams.com/video/nCGgC7WYHgw/video.html
She is rapidly learning English and is very creative. Here are a couple interviews with a college dean in Japan where he has made her a professor. She occassionally lectures at his college.

She has written and choreographed songs for Japanese TV shows such as this one,
      czcams.com/video/Awws_1QNhSI/video.html
When she made her mind up that she wanted to come to the US, she managed to find a way to make it happen. Not so easy to do, but several things fell in place for her besides being fully supported by her family. She got a contract to redo all the tracts on the Final Fantasy games. She applied for an artist's visa to come to the US and had a number of world class musicians write letters on her behalf to be included in her visa application.
When her visa was approved by the US State Department, the US ambassador to Japan went to her house in Hokkaido to personally deliver the visas to her family along with welcoming gifts. This video is posted somewhere on youtube.
When she was nine years old Newsweek said that she was one of the 100 most influential people in Japan.
      www.newsweekjapan.jp/magazine/238541.php#google_vignette
Besides being a young lady, she is very active. She likes to play golf and likes the outdoors. There is no question she likes California, but living there has given new meaning to this experience to her and her family. Even though she comes from a country where earthquakes are common, she moved to a section of the US where they are just as common. They recently had the house where they were living was hit by a landslide and trashed it. Fortunately, no one in the family was injured and they were able to quickly relocate.
She has a new album coming out soon.
Of course she attends school, but there are issues due to her talent and development level. Currently, she is attending an art school, but really needs to reclassify as soon as she becomes a little more proficient in English.
Otherwise, besides her fans and superfans, not a lot of people know about her. There are other female drummers out there who have ten times the amount of subscribers on their youtube channel than Yoyoka does, but they do not have the musical skillset that Yoyoka does. Most of those drummers are very pretty and scantily clad which is the reason they have so many followers, nothing to do with their respective skillset.
But all of the Yoyoka fan base is very appreciative when people do reaction videos of her.
As Yoyoka is kind of a work in progress, all of us are amazed at what she has been able to accomplish. She is just getting started and as Tom Petty wrote in his song The Great Wide Open, The sky is the limit.
It is going to be interesting to see what she ends up doing with her talent.
Just wanted to give you some background on her so you will be able to give us some killer reactions.

Well I can tell you what she's not doing. She's not twirling and flipping drum sticks. At age 14 she is playing about twice a month at the Whiskey a Go Go, no rehearsal with folks she may have just met. She is recording original music with a producer for an album. She records and plays with a jazz fusion group The Ken Okada group featuring Yoyoka. She jams with Tom Morello's son Roman on a lot of Fridays. She's busy playing gigs and learning English while dealing with a crappy school (5 principals in one yr) and a challenging housing situation. Oh and landslides that blocked her home. She just moved to better housing and a School for the Arts. So we may have to wait until she develops new ways to play and teach the use of the drum kit. What's she doing? Hide and watch her.

She has started adding her own embellishments to the covers she’s plays. Her drumming always serves the song and/or the band she is playing with. She is not about showing off or pushing the envelope of what is possible. If that’s what you want, go watch El Estapario.

She has recorded 3 jazz albums as member of the Ken Okada group. The first one was released about 9 months ago. She is premiering the first song of the next album this Saturday. She is working on here own album this year. She live streams about twice months often you can catch some amazing improvisations. Every time I see her play I question how it is possible she somehow managed to get even better.

YOU introduced us to Yoyoka? Me? No self-aggrandizement there. In reality, you're really late to the game. I've been watching her videos for years and have met her and her family and have seen her perform live several times. I don't want to be overly critical. There's probably some small slice of the drumming world that isn't aware of her, and maybe you've introduced a sliver of those to her playing. Precision in language is important when speaking to a broad audience. Maybe you think precision in language isn't important. If that's the case, does precision in anything matter? Maybe I should take my desire for correctness down many notches. If that's the case, then I can't appreciate Yoyoka, because her playing only matters if you appreciate excellence. She's not just good for a young girl, she's good, period. Better than many professionals I've known. I wouldn't pay as much attention to excellence in speech, except you said that YOU introduced her to me. You didn't equivocate. I don't know, but there is more than a slight chance you'd be more popular if what you say makes grammatical sense. Maybe not. Maybe the world has devolved to the point that most people don't care about language or its precision. I think the world is getting dumber. I suspect I'm getting dumber right a long with it. I could be wrong. Thanks for the video. Welcome aboard the Yoyoka train. The more passengers, the better. She deserves it. If you think she's remarkable in this video, you HAVE to see her play live. Perhaps 'have' is too strong. "Should." She appears really proficient in this video, and her other videos, but until you see how effortlessly she plays, when you can see her playing in detail, the way her body moves, the things she does and how she does them, I don't think you can truly appreciate how good she is. I don't even think she is fully aware. She is very humble and very well mannered. Maybe it's a cultural thing. I suspect that's part of it, because if you had an American teenager her age that could do what she does, they'd be a prima donna, a terror. That's been my experience. I've seen people far less talented think the world of themselves and make a big show of it. Go check out one of her performances in person if you can. She plays a lot of shows, and she advertises her schedule. If you're in the L.A. area, maybe you've already done this. I don't know why this video popped up in my feed. I don't understand youtube's algorithm. Maybe I'll catch you at one of these shows. I look exactly like my avatar, except in 4D and with better lighting. Cheers. Note my use of qualifying words. I don't know everything and I know that. Dunning-Kruger, man.
