- The most versatile and legendary lens ever made. The Canon EF 135mm f2. No 135mm modern lens can match its glory. Plena? Pleasa. This lens does everything from portraits, environmental video portraits, landscape, wildlife photgraphy, astrophotography. It has that vintage character but is also razor sharp wide open. Best lens ever. I'm adapting it to Nikon ZF with 2 adapters, Megadap ETZ21 Pro and 7 Artisans EF SE. It works sometimes lol. Also adapted it to Sony A7S III for the wildlife shots and used in manual focus.

I don't even have a camera man! I just watch your videos because one day I might start my own CZcams if I grow the balls to do it. The main reason is because you help me with my depression and make me laugh. Thank You.
Gotta love Casey changing his mind on zoom vs prime for wildlife every second video.
He’s never said he prefers zooms?
He has been complaining about zooms sucking for weeks now. Keep up.
I've been using this lens professionally for over 15 years. I can't do without. Amazing lens!
The 135 F2 is legendary. It is amazing that a lens this good was introduced 28 years ago and still holds up. Sure, there are some newer versions that are a little sharper, but this lens is inspiring, beautiful, and still competes today. Great job!
The best ever video of a bird flying in slow motion. Wow. You did it.. Good Times.
At least 60% of this video was in focus 👍
Generous
Still a better hit rate than Fuji :D
The cinema is ours
I actually just bought a Canon camera again to get it back into my life, and I'm starting to enjoy using a Camera again 🤞
"The wind blowing in the wind" 😂😂
I kept two Canon lenses when I switched to Sony over a year ago. The 100mm f2.8L Macro and this lens, the 135L. Every time I use this 135mm I am blown away by it and have not a clue why anyone would actually "need" to upgrade it to the RF 135L f1.8. It so small and compact for what it is its just unbelievable. Happy you finally got this lens Sir. Hope you hang on to it for awhile.
Day after day your style is becoming your idol, Tony. Toneh all the way
I still have a 5D Mark II, and it uses old school Compact Flash, not CFast, so there are tons of cheap readers out there. For what it's worth, I was able to pick up a cheap SD adapter that lets me put a regular SD cards directly into the camera.
This. I think only Sony cameras used CFast (could be wrong on that). The Canon's used Compact Flash + SD if dual slot
@@definedphotography The 5D mk II came out in 2008, before CFast came out. I still have one, and like I said, it's easy to adapt an SD to fit into a CompactFlash slot. The funny thing is I rarely use the adapter because my Compact Flash cards are large enough. Also, the mk II only has one slot.
@@AskJoe I have some pretty old cards too, I have a couple 1 and 2 Gig cards that were "BIG" when I bought them. LOL
I remember when Combat Flash cards (brand Name ) were $275 for a 16gb card.
Now the crazy cost is Storage for al these files and Ram to process them.
"I’m Toneh 2. That’s 2 Tonehs" 😂
The 135mm f/2 L was one of my favorite lenses ever… only recently sold as I needed other gear, and was not a fan how it performed with adapters. Not the easiest focal length to work with, but man the depth is off the charts 👍
Makes me want to just get a Canon 6D II lol.
The Fringer EF to Z is pretty good.
But the EF lenses really perform well on EOS R bodies, better than native EF.
Bought a new R6 for the price of a used one, as they were dumping the old model - pretty good for what I paid for it and with IBIS.
135 mm is one of my favorite focal length, especially for portraits.
@collapsingruins I have Mk1 also. Look up Martin Castein on CZcams, no bs professional who earns a living from photography. I value his opinion but personally have no experience of mk2. He recommends mk1.
The 3D pop in the first 30sec…….damn I need to take a moment to freshen up, where are my cigarettes….oh wait I don’t smoke.
The bees were obliterated into the to "Toneh" realm 95% of the time.
Bought a Rokkor 135 f2.8 for my gf's minolta slr yesterday and I must say it felt like a sniper rifle just looking through the viewfinder
There is some killer Minolta glass, I have heard amazing this about the Celtic 135mm F2.8.
czcams.com/video/EvtxHXT0Rr8/video.html
There is a Canon 200mm f2.8 that is a small lens. You should get it.
3D popish too?
Hi Casey, I have a random lens suggestion for you! Just for fun, try an old adaptall-mount Tamron SP 180mm f2.5. It has the shortest focus throw ever, and its ED glass is just.. well, you be the judge. I think you'll love it!
Looking forward to next episode, the 200mm-talking-in-nature. You know it's happening.
I do use CF>SD>microSD adapter in 5d mk1
Works fine
@@collapsingruins No, it just works, but I bought it well used and it seems it'd been fixed long time ago.
I love big sensor with low megapixel.
I switched to Fuji from Canon around when the EOS R came out, and these days I keep wondering if I should switch back.
Canon's colour science is the best out there (yes, fuji film sims are nice but they're not the same).
The menu system just makes sense (Sorry Fuji, your menus suck, I love you but come on hire a non-programmer to do something more intuitive)
Canon's AF has always been some of the best in the business (Sorry Sony, I still love you).
The new RF glass is really only trumped by Zeiss Otus in terms of performance.
But the back catalog of EF glass has lenses like this, the 85 f/1.2, the 200 f/2.8, 50 f/1.0 etc that are just something magic.
I love my fuji. So does my back and shoulders. It's a different shooting experience. But Canon will always have a place in my heart. And one day I might switch back, even if I still have to deal with using 2 different cards for redundant shooting (Seriously Canon F-you, pick one standard and stick with it. Or copy Sony already and make the dual purpose slots so people can mix and match as they please).
am going bac to canon,,,,,
Being using a lot the Fujinon XF 90mm F2 (135mm equiv. on 35mm terms). Such a nice focal length to use!
I used to have the 135 f/2. It was fantastic. I sold it to fund my venture into Zeiss. I didn't use it often, but the results were always great.
i absolutely love this lens, don't leave with out it!
I think the autofocus might work better when you add a third adapter.
Been chasing down a good condition Canon 135mm F2 L lens and finally got one. Going to pair it with a Canon 5D and Canon 6D and also some Sony e-mount bodies. Have only heard good things about it. The footage in this video is dope by the way.
Canon 5Dii I tested it an is such a beauty. Get over it with the CF card. It's not a big deal. It's worth the magic. My R5C can't replicate the same vintage touch of 5Dii. Here's my thought: You'll probably never see a 5Dii release again. But R5's we'll see plenty. I got my backup copy. I know is a pain the manual focus, but imagine the DJI sistem that Potato Jet used in his R5c review. Manual focus wouldn't be a issue anymore. In fact I'm going to do a video with it and ef135, zeiss 140mm 1.9 project lens, ef35mm1.4 and soviet lens helios 58mm for fun comparison .
Does the 5d mk iii have that look or nothing comes close to 5d mark ii u got 2 😮
@@collapsingruins I owned the classic too, never tried the mark ii
@@collapsingruins definitely would love to see the look with a 5dc on video with nice glass, u got me wanting to buy my camera back again!
When that lens was in focus, about as good as it gets.
Eos 5D Mkii takes Compactflash. When I was buying Camera back in the Days I had to choose. Canon had just released the EOS 5D MkIII and EOS 6 D. The MKIII had the best autofocus, and a tad better picture. The MKII was the last EOS 5D with interchangable focusing Screen. Good for manual focusing. EOS 6D had for the time low light noise, cheaper build quality and good center focus. The 5 D Mkii was on sale and I bought it. The autofocus was bad compared to my EOD 7D, but the picture quality was very good. It had very good build quality and newer broke. It looked brand new when I sold It to a man who was heading to the Southpole and wanted a solid camera.
Never watched you before... very, may I say, charming, presenter!
Addicting actually.
Charmingly addictive.😢
I gotta say this lens looks amazing in the studio.
I cannot comment on Canon’s mirror-deprived interchangeable-lens cameras, (MDILCS?) but the EF 135mm f/2 is a most wonderful lens.
Amazing that heron walked all of the way out through that muck to that stick, without making the slightest indentation or trace of a track in that pollen guck, just to strike a weirdly uncomfortable pose. Nature, so full of itself.
When I was a photographer this lens was legendary 💪 😁
Just discovered this channel and I don’t have the words to describe it. 🤣
Educational and absolutely brilliant, really hits my sense of humour, plus it saves me
money because I’m not buying rubbish equipment anymore 😂
Keep doing what you’re doing. Love it 😂👍
I saw the videos about the RF 135mm F1.8. I can afford to buy it, but I will buy the EF 135mm F2. It's plenty sharp enough, has mich better color saturation, better microcontrast and tonality.
All these brands are making these super sharp over corrected lenses that have been sterilised and have more lens elements than a zoom. I think the best indication is Vanessa Joy still posting pictures using her old 135mm F2, despite posting a video as a Canon embassador about being excited about the new lens. Anyone with a good eye will immediately see the difference between a good lens and a lens that is only good at being sharp.
Working on a national holiday. Respect for his work ethic.
135 was the lens to own in the film days
135 with crop modes on high res full frame cameras for the 135/210mm combo.... sublime
Can you try that 135mm EF lens with a speedbooster on MFT for wildlife? Now that would be awesome!
When You use EF lenses on newer EOS Cameraes, they are corrected. On my 1DXmkiii, the 28-300 3.5-5.6 L IS is not the best lens on the chart, but it is corrected and the pictures is much sharper than on an old 1DMkIV.
Long before digital cameras, shooting on my Mamiya Sekor 1000 DTL, my favorite lens was a 135mm. I especially liked it for outdoor portraits shooting.
Took my Rokkor 135mm f2.8 out today and decided that it's strangely my new favorite lens next to my MC Rokkor 28mm f2.5. It's such a fun length to play with (that's what she said)
That red light is burning my brain like the Chicken Roasters sign.
Kenny Rogers Roasters
0:22 - man that looks great. That image is POPPING. Also Kasey - the Canon EF 200/2.8 is worth a try as well, $350 U.S. used - and then there's the 400/5.6, $600 U.S. used, and the 300/2.8 (V1) for about $1150.
i have the Z8 and the fringer EF adapter it works great and is the best of both worlds. Nikon makes the best camera bodies and I agree EF glass is the best. Canon bodies are nice but annoyingly limited whereas Nikon puts no limits on their bodies. There is no perfect system only frankenstein systems that are true to your fragmented heart.
I spend the last year looking at lenses all day for R8 video R100 stills. I think I just got there, 7 lenses later. I then thought, shit I'm going to miss trying to figure out which lens now. Thanks for showing me it could be several levels worse. Can't imagine doing it through multiple systems.
Great footage!Thanks for sharing!
Have you had a look at the Canon 400mm 5.6 l lens?
You should try it! It is not to heavy very sharp and most important 3D pop is the best i have seen so far...
Looking forward to your next Videos on both Channels. Cheers
Whoa, piggybacking adapters!! I watched a video yesterday on a channel called Camera Mystique. He pretty much disagreed with your notion of 3D pop and vintage lenses in his video. I have the Canon FD135mm T3.5 and it's a lovely lens. Kasey the bee whisperer.... I actually prefer a less tight shot with birds than most bird photographers shoot. Some of the close shots are just way too tight for my eye. That red winged shot was really nice. It showed the bird in the setting. I like that. Kasey using a video to talk himself into an new camera from Canon! LOL! Have a great day!
Camera Mystique is one of the more interesting camera youtubes out there....he does seem to bash a few concepts but he always expands on it...he seperates 3d pop from "dimensionality"...he doesn't trash vintage lenses....he identifies their characteristics and when they suit different circumstances...its photo centric but applies to video just as much....understanding micro-contrast and field curvature are difficult subjects that many experienced photographers don't get right....his videos are worth the time to listen to, even when you don't get it first time around......watching his ziess 28mm f2 vs milvus 25mm f1.4 vs zeiss 25mm f2 is a very very interesting exploration (i own the first 2 lenses )
@@robertwlittlejohn I didn't mean to say he trashed the lenses, only the notion that low element count gives that dimensionality/pop. I believe he said what happens is that the old lenses have much more vignette effect which causes the center to appear far brighter. But, I probably shouldn't have used the word trashed either.
honestly the outside talking static videos are the best
Camera makers should all feature some sort of profile feature like Blackmagic that lets you change all the settings at once to match whatever you're shooting. I created one profile for in studio, one for higher speed (barely), and one for outdoors. I'm not sure about the Blackmagic Pocket OG, but the newer models have it.
I just love every time you talk about how good the AF is you're out of focus for it
This is like when someone is watching you do something and you keep screwing it up just because they are watching you
We loved our FD 135/2.5, great for getting intimate portraits, while staying out of the subject's "personal space"....and beautiful bokeh, as well... The 135/2.0 seems to be more of the good stuff!
@@lohikarhu734 That's all there is to 135mm: added shooting distance. People don't get it.
love mine. used it as only tele option on 3 trips to Asia & 1 to europe. less convenient, too short or too long sometimes, but loved the shots where it did work. quality vs quantity
I'm predicting that MarkusPix is going to hate the R5II for some random reason and after a rant review he'll send it to you.
And the 200mm f2.8L, 70-200mm f4l MK1 focus super accurately with the sigma MC-11.
I wanted a Canon tele prime to do exclusively Crow and Raven photos on 35mm film. I was debating between this and the 200mm f2.8. I did go for the latter (half the price, more reach), but damn, seeing this, it's quite the beauty.
I have a “cousin” lens, which is the canon EF 200mm f2.8L. I’ve heard both lenses have similar designs and are from the same time. You should try the 200 if you can. It is not the sharpest lens but it definitely has character and you can find it much cheaper than the standard EF 70-200 zooms. It doesn’t have IS, but it can definitely be used for wildlife with ibis cameras like the R7 or the R6 (or a Sony camera I suppose).
Also: what happened to the guy who used to insist adaptors were bad? Now he's using two at once?
I do hate what I've become :)
And and, it's been sooo long now since we've heard you utter "flippy screen". Plus - BITCOIN? Really? I don't believe it exists... It's not real🦄
It's a conspiracy 👈
@@cameraconspiracies probably the keto diet then? Sorry you feel this way, we still like you.
this lens is a magic.
If you could buy one camera from each manufacturer what would you get?
Lenses are like many tools, there will never be just one that is the do all. This lens does have many uses but it's just one you either have in you bag or it's the only one you take and you miss some stuff.
Can you do a video discussing adaptors for vintage lenses? Sorry, I'm a newb.
lmao I was in Tommy Tompson Park on Canada Day, Wild that I end up seeing it a few days later in a camera gear review video 🤣🤣🤣
slow motion bees!
As a canon R6 II and R7 shooter the EF 135 f2 is tempting but I might as well go all in and get the 135 1.8 RF. 😊
unbeeleavable footy 🐝
May I make a request? Nikkor AF 180mm t2.8 ED IF (or the AIS manual focus version). I’ve had my eye on that lens adapted to my GH6 for wildlife and Sony a7siii for all around short tele.
Wonderful lens. I have three of the D versions and one plain AF version. I use them on Nikon. Absolute must have, life and death level do or die. Just get one. Then again, it might be lame on GH6 or other cameras. Never tried it on anything but Nikon. Usually around $300 on eBay. The AF and AF D versions are very little more money than the AIS lens, and if you go AIS, make sure to get the ED version, which is MUCH better than the older non-ED version.
@@danncorbit3623 thanks for your recommendation, you’ve verified what I keep hearing about the lens. I use a few vintage AIS Nikkor lenses on my gh6 and they’re my favorites to use, over my native autofocusing lenses. I think it might be a good fit, especially with a speedbooster. Maybe even more-so on the a7siii. My 400mm f3.5 AIS is especially impressive adapted to the gh6.
EVEN Canucks
Can Enjoy
JULY 4th 🎉
Thanks Casey
Just a suggestion, explore some of the vintage Nikon lenses (truly vintage) before giving up on that system. Even with wildlife you can get some very good deals on MF only lenses which are essentially the same optics as the modern Af-s lenses, and they were made to focus manually for wildlife, so no weird fly by wire nonsense.
Have you tried the 100-400 mk1 canon EF? It has different design of zooming you just push back and forth (not rotate) I love it your mom to! That makes me at least able to manual focus while zooming, Would have catch that Bird flying with details.
Heard you talk about 5D Mark 2 you can't film and look in the hole need to look at the back screen, I have it but use my eos R for wildlife because of that :(
Ok, next video vlogging with 135mm please :D.
So, I've been thinking about the 3D pop. Peak 3D pop (microcontrast) will likely come from apochromatic lenses as they have been designed to have the light leave at the same direction it came in, thus with good clear glass and a decent coating, I 'think' this is where the microcontrast of kings will be found. Most often, these lenses are macro lenses, as a macro lens has more need to deal with chromatic shift. Perhaps that's why you enjoyed the Sony macro lens?
i really like the Nikon 180mm 2.8 and think you will too, Canon 200mm 2.8 is probably good as well.
5D mark mark II takes compact flash not cfast cards. Much cheaper and have been around forever.
I have this lens. I've recently got into buying ef L glass and adapting it with the neeweer variable nd adapter onto the R5. Definitely get either that or R5 ii so you can 8K those birds. They won't know they're born! Oh the cinema.
This lens has a such beautiful, soft and blurry look when out of focus that think it is making me fall out of love with Toneh-balls
I own the AI-S Nikon 135 f/2 and it's amazing
Damn so many tasty lenses mentioned in one video
1005 whit you! And if you wanna 150mm and light weight, go for the Olympus 75mm f1.8. This lens is completely underrated. While many may say, you are limited with this focal length, I would say "I do it all!" And I'm very happy with the OM1 colours as well.
hello. dslr and all the stuff is so stressfull all the settings can you make a review on the canon xf series ? please !! ur the best i only trust you . greets from germany
I have the 135 f2 w/5d4 it's pretty much an unbeatable combo HOWEVER consider the 100mm f2 i've went back to using it again it's more practical and has excellent+ resolution sometimes i feel like i'm only convincing myself the 135 is somehow better, both have different use case but if you're not sure between the 2 and with the cost of the 135 get the 100 and hold off, you won't be disappointed.
Shooting use that Sony zvE-10 product showcase would’ve kept you perfect😂
35mm t0.5 is the way to go. But one needs a huge focal reducer using fresnel glass
Every multiple Card reader I have ever seen has cf. Did you buy the Trudeau version?
he thinks the camera uses cFast since he has no clue about what he says most of the time
i got a 135 mm f 2.8 konica minolta maxxum af lens!!! love my sony a850! you can also get a sony a900. same camera. A-mount rocks!
oof but these full frame dslr cameras have no video abilities. lol.
i'm still using my hotspot on my phone so watching in 144p. lololol
are you kidding me with this bee footage
dang i just found an old nikon d40 sd card so i was thinking about dusting off my uncle's old Nikon D40 and tryin to charge her batteries...
rendering of this one is something
135 I think i will brake out one of mine. But it’s a hard choice favor the Nikon 1:35 1.4 or the Sony 135gm
I can’t believe…. 😂 I bought that lens 2 days ago. Thanx for review.
I recently picked up the 135 1.8 G master!
You have the same sense of humor as I do, and its great.
You say classic Canon L lenses are your favorite. Ken Wheeler has a list of Nikkor D-series lenses that supposedly have awesome micro contrast. Just curious to know, have you tried any of those?
You can try the contax zeiss 180mm f2.8 it can focus close
I know it's just being announced, but do you have any thoughts on the new 85mm coming from Sony?
Just buy the 5d2. Plug it in your pc via USB works fine. It costs less than your adapter. You won’t regret it. Just forget autofocus in video unless you get an assistant.
I’d love a Canon EF 135, but will make do with the Fuji 90. Have you ever tried a tilt-shift lens? Best Canon lens I ever had was the 24mm TS, oodles of micro contrast. Not a fast lens but great rendering. Thanks for all your hard work.
If you get a 6DII then the GH7 won't feel so big anymore, and you can adapt the 135 for wildlife with the 2x crop.
I'd still wait for the R5II.
Go ahead and set you sites on the Olympus 150 to 400 TC = 1000mm baby loving mine my favorite lens micro 4/3 rocks
I just found out that my Batis 135mm only shoots 10fps on my sony A9. Why, Sony...
I love that shot of the heron down low. My question is how do these lenses work for photography?
Just press pause on your video :)
