For those coming to this a year later, Mindustry has massively changed since this. It is now an open "planet", the levels are just spots on the planet - some pre-generated, some seed-generated.

There was sorta-kinda a 'genre' that predates Factorio, made up largely of Zachtronics games, styled as 'games for engineers'. They tend to be more puzzle-based rather than open-ended, but old flash games like the Codex of Alchemical Engineering (since remade, polished, and improved upon as Magnum Opus) involved smashing bits together to make more complicated bits in increasingly complex production chains, etc. I played me a whole lot of SpaceChem back in the day.

I would not put Factorio as the source for the Factory genre, I am sure there are many examples that inspired those mods in the first place.

    - PvP
    - you can even invite players in the campaign in very difficult sectors

Nice video, didn't know about shapes.io before now.
My personal somewhat factorio like game ranking would be:
    1. Factorio
    2. Factory Town (fantasy setting and 3D make this pretty interesting also I kind of like not having an avatar to control, not needing to walk around the map gives just building stuff more focus)
    3. Mindustry
    4. Production Line (about building a car factory, surprisingly enjoyable)
    5. Automachef (about automated cooking, was surprised by how well suited the theme of cooking stuff is to automation and it's optimization, food spoilage and rush hours in particular make things pretty neat)
    6. Autonauts
(all about programming bots instead of using conveyor belts or such)
    7. Blueprint Tycoon (you build a town but each production building has a blueprint that would have been like a mini Zachtronics game puzzle if they were implemented slightly differently but as is I found the way it works too simple)
    8. Some Ludum Dare game from at least a year ago that I forgot the name of (it was about magic in some form)
    9. Survival Vacancy (Terraria like, not super interesting to me and pretty far from finished)
    10. Automation Empire (Would be awesome if it didn't have ton of stupid limitations, just one example would be that pipes used to deliver resources to nearby structures connect only in a straight line and come only in lengths of 1 and 3 which means lots of time spent figuring out the exact spacing your structures should have and/or doing some silly workarounds just to get resources across a 2 or 4 tile gap)
Anyway when Satisfactorio first came out I quickly noted that my PC probably can't run it very well but it's performance might have been optimized since then so maybe I should look into it again.

@@qzump7989 Cool, looking at those I'm reminded that I somewhat recently played and liked FortressCraft Evolved(and Vintage Story though that's not very factorio like) which is probably pretty similar to those mods.
Anyway some other factorio like games I've played since my first comment are
      * Dream Engines Nomad Cities a cool game kind of similar to Warptorio mod(also reminds me of Eggoria which is a lovely nomadic city builder)
      * Satisfactory, it was nice and worked decently on my old PC.
      * Dyson Sphere Program which I played for quite a while despite getting abysmal FPS, liked how jetpack worked in that so much that decided to add a jetpack mod to Factorio though obviously that wasn't quite the same thing.
      * ReFactory, still early in Early Access so didn't play much but it's seemingly trying to feel less exploitative with more focus on green energy and such and in general trying to be more appealing to people who would be passionate about that.
      * InfraSpace, much more of a city builder, I feel like most of my time was spent building and adjusting roads but it's still pretty factorio like overall.

I'd like a 2D factorio with way more exploration and some impactful decisions. For instance a snowy biome could have no enemies, but once you get pollution it melts snow which floods your base and also invites enemies. Or you could have desert where you need water to cool down your factory. And the incentive to go there is that these are the only places where specific resources are common, you can of course tap into tiny patches in safe areas but you will feel how you starve for resources. If the game invited you to explore distant lands with diverse biomes, mechanics, risks and payoffs then it would be great. How about delinearizing gameplay? Maybe an alternate route to get something? How about more hostile fauna, maybe some infighting we can use thanks to careful wipe out of a few key nests?
You know factorion, but on drugs. I didn’t really touch the mods that much, I got quickly overwhelmed by Pyandon’s, which is probably natural, but still I doubt there’s that level of mods out there. Anyway, anyone else get feelings factorio is just perfect base that needs more development?

I'm not sure if this is common for people like me, but I have actually owned and played all the games mentioned in this video, so I kinda wanna give my opinion.
    - Factorio
factorio is one of those games that I have always been obsessed with but I never actually got to buy it, so when I remembered this classic from my childhood it just had to be the next game I buy, and to this day I don't regret my decision at all. Being a very fun game to sink your time into and also a great game for exploding tons of enemies with your automatic grenade factory, the only real downside to it is that for more casual players it could be a bit overwhelming and not so fun to play if you're not into the combat being basically forced upon you.
After all a great game if you're looking for a more complicated and thurough factory game.
    - Satisfactory
what can I say, this is probably the best factory game I have ever played. It has awesome grafics, sound design, research mechanics, factory building, actually some really creative and allowing building for all your architectual needs. It is basically a 1up to the games it took inspiration from, which doesn't mean that the other games like factorio haven't done certain things better, what I'm saying is that with a bit more work and the game coming out of early access, this is and is always going to be a masterpiece in the industry by coffee stain
If you love being satisfied by nicely lined up factories and also love the though of exploring an alien planet, then this game is worth every penny.
    - Mindustry
even with my limited experience with this game I can tell that it's a treat to anyone who loves tower defense and factory building. I could find myself coming up with creative sollutions to problems I would never think I'd have to face in a game like this. It has a very unique idea and a great execution, I think it's really underappreciated and deserves more love than it gets. I'm not too much into the combat focused games but I still very much enjoyed it and would recommend at the very least trying out the itch.io version.
overall, an awesome game with an awesome idea and a really cool artstyle as well.
    - Shapez.io
now, this game may seem a little barebones at first, but it is a favourite of mine and if you give it a try you'll soon understand why. Having a very simple idea while having the game be so much fun to play, this game can get really fun, really fast. At the start I saw it through a youtube video and it really grew on me when I tried out the browser version. I bought it as soon as I could just so I could experience the full version for myself. If I'm going to be honest it did get a bit boring later on but I managed to keep myself going with just starting another save and trying different methods of planning out my factory and after all, the game gets really frequent updates from (I think) the one passionate developer that works on this game and it also has a puzzle DLC so now you have a whole plethera of things you can use to motivate yourself to play.
Great game to play for relaxation on your free time.
And that probably concludes this. I just want to say that this is all my opinion and if you disagree you can CALMLY respond and propose your opinions and experiences with any of these games. Also props to whoever actually reads this, I apreciate you very much and also thanks to Ingeniouseclown for making this very entertaining video, so entertaining in fact, that I wasted at least an hour on this comment. :)

To know that you have created schematics that you couldnt possibly explain to very many people. That only a select few can even fathon how you make every single resource from scrap. Or how you create power seemingly out of thin air. Even people who have played for a hundred ours are still in their beginning stages. THEEEEN, you get to multiplayer. Where nothing you learned as of tactics or space management applies. Where itll only take the opponent a few minutes to find out how to completely eradicate you. Due to how dyson spheres work with energy generation, it gets exponentially easier to add more to a sphere as it is built, and once you have one fully constructed it makes it immensely easy to build another

While Satisfactory is in some ways a more chill game than Factorio, it does provide slightly other type of challenges and the size of the factory can be felt more.
A relatively new entry to this genre is "Learning Factory" with a little bit different approach, and a big huge shout out for Dyson Sphere Program.
