Oct 2021 makes it about 4 months short of being 34 years since I started making this SID soundtrack on the 64.
How did that happen? :0
I don't think you'll ever top your finest hour which of course was obviously writing the music to my mate Mark Healey's game "KGB Superspy". We both enjoyed your characteristic growling basslines and punchy percussion. :)
Check out the band "Fastloaders". Those Norweigian guys.. well.. yeah.. you really did something great there! Thanks!
You know, I am at work right now, and listening to this :) Oh the childhood memories.
@Jimbo Bimbo Thanks. You're welcome.
That's the very first time I see your account on CZcams!
Although I haven't played Commodore 64 games much, I've listened lots of SIDs, including your own Driller and Last Ninja 2. Thank you for them!
The Mansion Loader is even more special because it got converted by someone to NES in "Stuck in Castle Nessenstein" demo.
I am 47 years old and tears are running down my cheeks while listening to this. The fist of nostalgia hits ever so hard.
Same here dude, lvl 47 irl and this thing kicks ass, brings back the good times
45 this year, same feeling
C64 Veteran , 48 years 👍🖖
Same here, but bit older, 50.
Our average age here is about 50 :) i have the same audience over at my channel. :)
The central park in-game theme is propably one of the best pieces of music ever made.
yup, always wrestling for first place with the robocop theme on the zx spectrum.....superb.
2020 here, and still to this day AAA games don't have this much attention to music. Matt Gray literally made full length songs for 6 levels and final boss plus their loading screens, 14 full length tracks that don't just loop over on itself and this whole soundtrack is compressed down to only 42KB of data users are saying.
Not only did he compose full length songs for each level and loading screen, these tunes still hold their own in terms of quality and production 32 years later.
Imagine it being 1988 and you hear this wondering how much better music will be in video games moving forward, not realizing that this is peak video game music.
Try Deus Ex Human Revolution
@Dalle Smalhals Just Deus Ex, you're right. Both have remarkable music😎No, not too young. Played Last Ninja as a child.
There were other games, such as Unreal, which had amazing soundtrack in pretty much the same fashion. Probably also due to the fact they were also programmed in tracker softwares. But alas, you can count the games after the C64 and Amiga era with such amazing OST almost with two hands...
@@Nostrum84 I remember playing Quake audio tracks in loop in my CD player... Alongside Trent Reznor, I enjoyed Sascha Dikiciyan (007) and Frank Klepacki (C&C) OSTs.
Neither does movies.
I never played this game when it came out. I was born in 85. Nostalgia doesn't play a factor here.
I discovered the Ninja soundtracks in 2016.
It's 2020 now, and I can say this soundtrack is pretty dam timeless.
January 2023 and this still brings me fond memories of my childhood, this soundtrack still stands head and shoulders above all game soundtracks in my memory
46 years old and have such fond memories of this
Most of the best music tracks and games on C64 came from the UK, just extraordinary those brits
Also, it's pretty incredible that this entire 1 hour CZcams video is a recording of the outcome of about 42 KB of code and data. ;-)
Well, and a quite complex hardware ;)...
I have a recollection this one was a multiloader with 2 cassettes so you loaded each stage individually. Agree with your sentiments though :)
My version of Last Ninja 2 was loaded from the Datasette which stored roughly 100 kB pr. tape-side - but I agree. Impressive work within those boundaries!
And the wonderful world of SID!
All 13 Songs together are available as a SID file, comes in at 38.7 KB
I was an athlete back in the 80s. Track and field. When I was on the field and preparing to compete, I'd always get nervous. To psyche myself up for my events, I'd play the music from the loading screen of The Last Ninja 2 which is present here as *The Mansion Loader.* It's not particularly inspiring music, but for some reason, it used to really do it for me. Made me feel like I could take on the world!
Played it in 1988, listening to it in 2021.
2020 and I am still listening to this. It's been 32 years now since Last Ninja 2 was released.
listen now , what a music for c64
easily the best game and the best music of all time
Ya me too I'm 44 years old .still listen to it sometimes ..
Have you listened to Matt Gray's Reformation albums? One of them is a full recreation of the LN2 OST on modern synths.
32 years? holy god I feel old :-(
These songs reminds me of the safety of my room as a child. These songs are so much more than just the game
what a masterpiece this still is. everyday full volume in my car!
One of the best C64 game tunes!
I remember recording this on a cassette tape back in the day and would listen to it all the time!
Haha, same here. Incompetent little me had to stuff a microphone into a (big) headphone and wrap it with cloth...pffhh..hehe. BUT: I was most definitely the 1st kid in my school to listen to ''techno'' YEARS before that was a thing. Awesome soundtrack!
Me too…
Later on on made them into MP3, and still listening
Wow, so I wasn't the only one who did this! 🤘😆
@@Grandmaster-G So glad I wasn't the only one that did this XD
Our tape deck literally had a line in and I never knew what it meant so I just did the microphone thing lmao
One of the best soundtracks of all time.
^
Yes, allthough its pretty heavily inspred by Tangerine Dreams. Especially the Mansions track.
@@PepsiMagt The track from "The Office" is literally directly lifted from a Tangerine Dream song.
@@ImperatorGrausam Thats what she said
This and the "Platoon" soundtrack
The bassline with this bass runs of "The Office - loader" will always be one of my alltime favs.
It's incredible how good the bass is from the C64 chip - and mad respect to Matt Gray
Adding of the bass is perfect 😸
Maybe THIS is the Greatest Soundtrack, for a Game ever.
Just ONE Track should be more then enough for a really great Game.
And here are so many unforgettable Tracks.
What electronic music meant to me, when I was young! This is just ace!!!!
The Last Ninja 2 the best episode of the game.
Here's a list for people using phone since the description's timestamps won't work with the CZcams App:

Mal abgesehen davon, das ich des niemals ohne Trainer spielen konnte, das iss der abgefahrenste Soundtrack aller Zeiten. Outstanding, Alleinstellungsmerkmal. Und die Grafik aber auch, die Story... ohh myyy!
I was gonna say something cool about the sweet nostalgia trip in these tunes, but kickAss music like this doesn't need my compliments.
Impossible to get tired of the Central park songs and the Mansion Ingame. Long live Matt Gray!
Somehow there seems to be a universal taste that makes us like the same tunes
This never gets old!!!!!
This brings back memories. Absolutely one of the best game series of all time.
This sounds awesome, if I close my eyes it takes me back to being 14 again....
Everything seemed so much easier and simple back then......
@Henry Emrich Wow. You sound really enraged that some of us weren't beat up, sexually abused, teased, runaway, homosexual, persons of color...
I guess your answer was to 'crack those "illiterates" in the head and yet, here you are somehow angry and violent posting here even at the end of 2019?
Just show us where Trump touched you. You're safe here, in this safe space... :)
@Henry Emrich OK ZOOMER
My god Matt Gray is a god himself 💪 This game was my favourite 34 years ago, and still this soundtrack hits me deep.
i think this and platoon are the soundtracks from c64.
@@rune20401 You're absolutely right 🤝
How does this only have 98k views? I must have listened to this one about 1000 times alone!
One of best ever C64 music ever👍
Still one of best game soundtrack ever.
geil. da war ich 13-14. herrlich. besonders die Load musik hat mich berührt.
Never played this game. But this album soundtrack is too awesome. Beyond anything currently out now. Catchy melodies, this will be timeless.
I think it already is ; )
People today wonder why kids of the 80s and 90s are so nostalgic. Well, the latest Big Console™ video game has some pop garbage soundtrack that sounds like the same repeated _doom-doom_ bass monotone garbage while us "old people" were enjoying some of the best original composition and programmatic feats *ever.*
Beautiful. Downloaded it onto my phone and listening with headphones. Only issue: 51 minutes just isn't enough :D

Yes! One of the best C64 games and soundtracks ever made!
Matt Gray is a musical genius , one the best soudtracks ever for any video game ever!, the SID chip has never sounded so good!
This is a dual SID setup. Not commonly found but quite easy to make if you could only get that SID chips needed. In practice it always boils down to buying two C64, a lot of soldering and sacrificing one of the C64 or both depending on what you are building. It is for a good cause though.
A couple of these tunes are like for like off a tangerine dream album
Τhis is just incredible for the standards back then Sid and C64 were awesome very dinstinct sounds even hearing them now
This music made me become a heavy metal, drum'n'bass and dubstep fan.
I had no idea the C64 was capable of tunes like this. I remember we had them back in school and we used to play garbage like Lemonade Stand or typing games on them. The Stage 1 tune is one of the greatest things I've heard in any game.
This game was way ahead of its time. The music is also very well composed.
+kimchipower
I feel sorry for you. I played this game when I was 5, before I even got to school.
See some of last demos (e.g. Edge of Disgrace). On demoscena they make impossible things :)
And then we had AMIGA500 !!!!
The UK had 90% of the best composers on C64 in the industry and they blew everyone else away. In fact most of the best games came from the UK through Ocean, Imagine, Elite, Hewson, Gremlin, System 3, Psygnosis and many others. The UK is just an incredibly creative country
This is my favorite game soundtrack
had to take my headphones off because i thought the sound was coming from my speaker across the room... well done ! :)
same lol :D
same here this sounds amazing
Same here!!! LOL!! :))
Same here, and I don't even HAVE a speaker!
Same here. I listen to these headphones everyday, mostly youtube, some google play store. And this is the first time I've turned my head to look at the source of a sound that seemed to be coming from the side of the room. My ears were totally fooled!
Can't believe the quality on this mix. The first game deserves this treatment as well!
This game was a defining experience of my childhood. It is completely ingrained in me, even if I wake up from my sleep, I can still play it all the way to this day. There was no internet yet, we figured everything out ourselves.
Good god, this takes me back...
Sounds amazing! Last Ninja 2 good memories, wish this was recorded on the 8580
I love this music
Sounds amazing.
I was sure it was coming through my speakers for a moment at the start and ripped off my phones to check! This music doesn't and will never get old. I'm not sure why the SID got used in such incredible ways, but it lends itself to deep, bassy, moving sounds. Thank you for upping the quality with this.
SID forever
Wow, the quality of this is amazing. Great sense of depth/positioning. One of the most influential pieces of music in my life also - the nostalgia tied to it. It's not like I listen to it all the time but I'm always happy to hear it. And my wife will happily tell you that I am insane but she loves me for the insanity too so I'm lucky.

Great OST Soundtrack Memory of the 8 Bit Ära. This Games is one of the best Games for C64. It is Time for an Remake after 36 years. As a Kid from the 80 a long Dream came to Reality.
my favourite game forever :(
reminds me my childhood
i was might be 9 years (born in 1979) or maybe 1-2 years more (istanbul, not as easy to find games as in EU or US)
super graphics, super musics, super playability
i remember i was begging to my elder brother to find that game (pointing in pictures in a magazine called 64'ler = 64s ) "look at that, it has wonderful graphics, please find that game for me) when i first played i realized that it was also has wonderful musics too

20:40...I remember this tune as a teenager whilst playing my '64 running through the 3D Maze of this game. What an amazing machine!
The Office in-game music is absolutely stunning and super catchy :)
Played it back then, still gives me goosebumps! Love it and thanks for uploading!
Amazing work. Not only is it a catchy ninja tune, but thinking about the limitations of technology back then. A masterpiece.
Every time I hear the performance of this chip, I'm amazed. I'm a fan of the CPC (remember the 8-bit war?) but I'm blown away here. It's a hell of a sound processor for its time, and the musicians have managed to master it. I have to admit that the C64 is deadly when it goes to music.
I regularly return to listen to this brilliant piece of art. Thanks for the upload!
This music is a gateway drug. Thanks
Incredible sound, great memories, Thanks!
Best game soundtrack of all time
Heaven.
That is all.
This stereo version sounds incredible!
Yeah this is pretty solid music for simple bit chips. Just imagining what was going on in the mind of the composer... Unreal.
Best music ever..
I miss c64. Old good Times. Very good👍
Simply Fantastic!!! Thank You!!!
I loved this game. Thanks for uploading.
Brilliant audio quality, awesome work, classic soundtrack, thanks man!
THIS IS SOME OF THE MOST AMAZING PERFECT MIDI MUSIC FROM BACK IN THE DAY. THANK YOU FOR BRINGING BACK SOME AMAZING MEMORIES AND TUNES
Well, It's not MIDI. It's SID. Hand coded machine MOS 6510 code modifying the registrys of the MOS Technology 6581/8580 Sound Interface Device (SID) chip. Hard to find any method more time consuming or hard to create music with. :)
@David Harrell Well yeah, how else would you do it? Granted, they had software to do a lot of the repetitive nonsense, but this wasn't made easily.
Thanks for the upload. Sound very nice in the headphones!
The street loader, absolutely the best of many good ones.
The times my friend and I used to sneak into his older brother's room to play this on his C64 back in late 80's. He used to put traps in place to stop us like putting talc on the keys and cotton thread across the door to know if we'd been playing it. Those days were awesome.
Masterpiece of the era of the 8 bits games.
Matt Grays´eternal, self-build monument of sid music. Unforgotten classic! great audio-improvment. Thx!
Immortal!
Among the best C64 music ever!! Thanks for uploading! = )
God, that is an epic soundtrack. Brings back so many memories and sounds great with the volume cranked on decent headphones. Now I think I will go down the rabbit hole of your channel.

It's quite facinating that they created a separate track for the loader.
