  • This short video tutorial shows how to make a quick and simple polymer clay cane and turn slices into earrings. All the info you need to make your own is listed below, but to start with, sit back relax, and watch as the process unfolds.
The music from the video is English Country Garden by Aaron Kenny and Waterfall by Aakash Gandhi, both available from the CZcams Free Audio Library.
Here is the link to Conditioning Polymer Clay - • Conditioning Polymer C...
Here is the link to creating Skinner Blends - • Basic Skinner Blend Tu...
When I condition the polymer clay using my pasta machine I use setting 3, I do the Skinner Blend through setting 2, and the very thin sheet of clay is put through setting 9. For those rolling the clay by hand - setting 9 on my machine is 1 playing card thickness, setting 3 is 5 cards and setting 2 is 6 cards thickness.
The Polymer Clay I am using is FIMO Soft, but all well known brands of polymer clay will work well with this technique. I have used 1/4oz (7g) of White, Agate and Peppermint as one blend, Raspberry, Rose, and Lilac as the other. The thin layer of clay is 1/2oz (14g) of Plum.
For the green /blue pair of earrings, I used the same blue colour blend as above, then White, Sunflower Yellow and Apple Green for the second blend. The thin sheet of clay was done in Brilliant Blue.
    Equipment.
    • I work on a flat nonporous ceramic tile and bake on a smaller tile.
    • I use a polymer clay blade to slice the clay, and a clay roller to roll it.
    • I condition and create thin sheets of polymer clay by using a pasta machine dedicated to Polymer Clay use. If you do not have a pasta machine, you can roll the clay to a desired thickness, by having 2 equal stacks of playing cards either side of the clay, and rolling it till it reaches the height of the cards.
    • I use a needle to create a small hole in the clay.
    • To make the slices into earrings I added 2 jump rings, and a fishhook earring finding, put on with 2 pairs of small pliers.
    • I measure the clay sheet using a freely downloadable measuring sheet from www.printablepaper.net. I use the 4 squares to 1 inch one, which I laminate. You can also download a cm one.
    • When I bake/cure my clay, I always tent my tile in aluminium foil, which helps protect the clay should the oven spike in temperature. I use a small square of plain card beneath the earrings when baking, so the clay doesn’t touch the tile, and go shiny.
If you like my work, then please do have a look at my website, www.fionaabel-smith.co.uk/ and follow me on Facebook / fiona.abelsmith and Instagram. / fionaabelsmith.artist
I also have a number of Polymer Clay Tutorials to buy, both in my Etsy shop, PolyOriginals - www.etsy.com/uk/shop/PolyOrig... where I have more tutorials in a PDF format, and as a video tutorial here - polyoriginals.thinkific.com/co...

❤❤❤ Fiona, like most of your subscribers I enjoy all your videos and appreciate your dedication and generosity in sharing your knowledge and expertise. However, I find I have to postpone watching your full-length videos for sometimes as much as two weeks as I am so busy,(or too tired,) to watch an hour long video. I have metered satellite internet as well so there are times when buffering is so bad I just can’t watch.
These mini tutorials are absolutely perfect so please do continue your full-length tutorials but add minis too! Yay!!!
Thank you so much! I do look forward to each one of your tutorials. Be blessed! 😊

Thanks so much Cathy. I am assuming the wood can be baked ? I would do it a bit at a time. First all the sides, then you can get a clean edge with your craft knife before baking. Then I'd do the bottom of the cross, bake, and finally the top. That way you can get clean and neat corners and edges as you go. I hope that helps. Good luck :)

Do you have any tips for slicing oddly shaped canes without them distorting? I love love love your videos and work by the way!

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  Před měsícem

Thanks so much Amanda. 🙂Sadly there's no easy soloution with reducing oddly shaped canes, you have two basic options, and it is good to think about them when you design the cane in the first place. 1. pack the outside with translucent clay to create an easy shape to reduce, you then either cut thin slices so the translucnet clay disappears into the background, or cut it away from each slice as you take them. 2. reshape the cane into a more easily reduced shape such as circle, square or triangle, and then, when it is near the size you need, reshape it with your fingers/tools to get the shape you need. I tend to use the second option. Neither gives a perfect outcome, but until we can figure a way around it, that's the best advice I can give. I hope that helps 🙂
