As a writer i was completely blown away by Pacey, he was so well-writen for a teen show that it's actually crazy! This show in general was good but he was just something else. The best character in this show and one of the best in tv shows i've ever seen for sure.
I think it has also lot to do how amazing Josh is and how great actor he is. And how Josh and Pacey are so much alike. That's why Pacey's role was so natural to him.
I wholeheartedly agree. They definitely gave him the best lines, but his delivery was exceptional! And his chemistry with Katie was off the charts. It's unconceivable to me that people don't see it. Just like he said in the show "you can't deny the sparks between us."

I think he was only 20 when he started Dawson’s Creek, and even watching his early, early stuff is really impressive. The episode where his dad takes him fishing with Dawson & Mitch still breaks me heart.

I did my first go around but now she’s kinda growing on me!!
He was great, up until season 3. It’s crazy how writers destroyed his relationship with Andie, just so he could be with Joey. And be just as annoying and whiny as her.
No actually what happened is that Pacey and Joey were a thing first in S1 (ie there plotlines in the second half of S1, including when he tells Dawson he likes Joey and then kisses her). Then Kevin Williamson buried Pacey and Joey in S2 in favor of Pacey and Andie. Pacey and Andie ended up being an unhealthy relationship where Andie was dealing with her mental health struggles and Pacey felt like he needed to save her at all times... which is not healthy. And actually Joey is her best version of herself when she's around Pacey. And Pacey is always a gem and the best part of the show throughout all 6 seasons.
actually there are other reasons. the show was losing ratings in the first 2 seasons, and on the brink of being pulled by the network, people didn't connect to all the rambling on and psychobabble, it was a bit too boring. they needed something to reel in the viewers again. the actors had split up in real life and they needed something to take the focus away from the connection, so they had andie come in as a love interest so that they could come to terms with their emotions. but the chemistry between them was just undeniable and the 2 new writers saw it and decided to use it. which lead to the show becoming even better and end up not getting pulled.
Pacey told Dawson in season one that he had the hots for Joey. Even told him before he perused it so he didn’t step on anybodys toes.
