  • In this video I cover a very handy flat braid, the 8 stranded doubled edge braid. It is covered in the Ashley book of knots as number 2996.
It is a handy braid for making handles of dog leashed, belts etc.
    Enjoy the video!

A longer video showing the whole process from start to finish would be great.

Is there a rule of thumb or ratio you use to determine the starting length of your strands?

    Hey Mark
I really like these multistrand braids. However, I've never used them as I like to make bracelets with a brass clasp and loop. I haven't figured out yet how to do it.
I can double strands and cow hitch them onto the clasp, but how to finish in a nice loop. Any ideas?
Maybe I'll post a picture of the clasp in the Facebook group.

Arjan Dijkman /I’ll tell you what I do. I take 4 strands and fold them over in the middle. I have to tell you that if you’re going to make an 8” bracelet, you’re going to need a little over 3 times that length in your 4 cords. After you’ve folded your 4 strands in the middle back down from the middle about 3/4”.Take a c-clamp and fasten you’re cord down on the edge of the table at the point you’ve marked as 3/4”. Braid a 4 stranded round braid about an inch and a half long. Unclamped it and put the middle of the cords over a hook. Now you have 8 cords hanging down. You can do your 8 stranded braid from there. Sometimes,at this point,I’ll tie a half cobra knot around the strings on each end of the loop before proceeding. This way all your cords are on an even footing. After you’ve braided your bracelet to almost the desired length, you’re going to finish it off by tying a cobra knot around your eight cords. Measure here to see if this is the length you want. If it’s too long, untie you’re cobra and take out one braiding sequence. Re/tie cobra. If it’s too short, untie cobra and braid one or mor sequence according to your needs. Or you could add length with more cobra. You need something here to go into your loop. You say you wanted to use a brass something? You’ll need a hole in it for some of your cords to pass through. It needs to be sized right to fit your loop. If it’s small you can make your loop smaller by doing a whipping from the bottom of the loop towards the top. You don’t need to pass all your cords through your brass piece.(I’m assuming that if it doesn’t have a hole you’ve drilled one.) you can cut an burn any unwanted cords off just outside your last cobra.(or cut some and make a 4 stranded diamond knot. If you’ve passed your hole in your brass stopper. Tie a half cobra around all your cords. This half cobra will be a little different, instead of going through the normal way you’re going to go around two times on each side and pull it very tight. It’ll be locked in tight cut and burn everything you don’t want. You’ll learn how to adjust your loop size according to the size of your toggle.

Sean Redner -whenever I’m doing strait braiding, meaning I’m not knotting over a core, I use half the number of strings that are going to be in the braid. If I want to make an 18” neck cord, I’ll cut 3 strings around 60”. Then I go to the middle of the strings and braid a 3 strand braid. Just braid it the length you think you’re going to need your loop to be. Then bend that braided part over a hook and you’ll have 6 strings hanging down. Do your 6 strand braid till you reach the desired length. So whenever I’m going to braid from the middle out I’m going to add a couple of inches to my desired finished length and multiply by 3 to determine how long to cut my strings. A lot of people don’t braid from the middle out. If you’re not going to braid from your loop out. You can just do the straight 6 strand braid and include maybe an extra 2&1/2”to fold over and whip a loop with. In this case you’ll want to cut your strings around one and one half times your desired finished length. Then it might be wise to add an extra 5” to each string just to make sure you don’t come up short. You’ll learn after making a couple how best to do it.
