  • Dr. Joseph Lumbard gave a talk titled "Tradition and Inter-faith Dialogue" at the Sacred Web 2006 Conference in Edmonton, Canada.
Lumbard demonstrates how, from a Traditionalist perspective, we might view some seemingly irreconcilable differences over an historical figure who is part of two very separate religious traditions - in this case, the figure of Christ as understood by Christians and Muslims. He also discusses how Traditionalists, particularly Frithjof Schuon, along with the Christian theologian, philosopher and mystic Meister Eckhart explained the Trinity in a way that might be acceptable to both Christian and Muslim theologians.
Prof. Lumbard (born 1969) is an American Muslim scholar of Islamic studies and currently associate professor of Quranic studies at the College of Islamic Studies at Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar. Lumbard is an author, editor, and translator of several scholarly books, and has also written many articles on Islamic philosophy, Sufism, and Quranic studies.
