Remember bumping into Phase 2 in Forest Projects. I attended Morris High School in the BX, which was right across the street from Phase's building. Read MANY of his flyer's back in the day's too!
They did a a whole train with phase2 and zexor and I forgot who else on the j line I think. You can look it up it made the news.. as of Friday it was still in the yard waiting to get cleaned . Rest in paint phase2

I recently did a 45 minute presentation in my History of Design class on the History of American Graffiti, I included old photos of Phase II pioneering subway throwies and bubble style, also Iz Da Wiz, Stayhigh 149 and Tracy 168

R.I.P. Phase2... My first time seeing him and his style was in Subway Art (or Spraycan Art) book. My buddy D-Rock brought it into class back in ‘92. We were studying that book instead of taking Norse in our science class

I knew Phase 2 from elementary school , PS 140 in the Bronx . He lived in 965 Tinton Ave , along with Thomas Lee , (Original LEE163). in the Forest Houses. We went to school together .We used to go to this old bookstore on 165th. This Old White Man had magazines used and new , and used and returned comics for 3 to 10 cents. Mike was deep into Marvel art , and we were 11, in 67. He would have like 10 comics .He was always doodling on paper, and around that time he started the square version letters and then they became the bubble letters. He used to mention a Lonnie , I thought he was a cousin of his , but one day he said he wanted to be called Lonnie Wood. Period. From that day on ,he was Lonnie Wood. Mike was a smart and sensitive dude. 'Lonnie ' was his creative side .Phase 2 was his genius.

Im kind of a beginner in graffiti i do know stuff but i be thinkin is there meaning behind numbers in your tag like resk12, rake43, phase2, can2 and others. Just wondering lookin for answers to endless questions about graffiti so i can learn the "basics"
The reason some people put numbers behind there name is for two reasons. It was there street that they lived on or there was someone before them that had that name first. Example, KASE 2 or CASE 2 (The same person) and KACE UMXS (He was first). The both of them are from the Bronx. TOTEM TC5 and Totem 2 TATS Cru. But not everyone follows those rules. Example, PSYCHO TC5 and SEEN UA (He also wrote) PSYCHO. Here's a good example, SEEN UA started writing in 1973 and LIL SEEN (SEEN TC5) Started in the late 70's. My Name has a number because there was a guy who wrote it in there 70's and I started in the 1983. If you want a name make a list of names that you like and then go to "SUBWAY OUTLAWS or AT149ST" and check the list of names.

Love, Love this! Thank you! I"m searching for a photo of the famous 10- car subway train artwork supposedly done by Lee Q. of the Fab. 5 Dec. 1977 (was it the Christmas thing?). But I can't find a full photo of it anywhere! I did find a website where someone created a montage of a few cars and published it on a film strip- but that's not what I'm looking for. Something more comprehensive! Can you help me find that- does it exist?

Graffiti wasn't associated with hip-hop until Style wars said it was. Keep in mind, every writer has their own history. Some writers (DEZ, for example) were much more exposed to rapping and break dancing than someone like SEEN..
@@digitalsmooth8377 your wrong..kool herc who is credited with starting hip hip was a writer..phase 2 and buddy esquire did early hip hop flyers in the 70s..writers who dissasociate graff from hip hop are usually white rocker types and you know what comes with that
Blade and original TC5 didn’t listen to hip-hop,as didn’t many others.like I said-every writer had their own history. If you grew up the South Bronx you were most likely exposed to it more than in Queens, where VINNY and IZ grew up.
@@digitalsmooth8377 in the early 70s hip hop didnt even exist but the culture was in fruition..the elements were there exept mc'ing wich came in the late 70s..breakbeats were being used and thats the foundation even though graff came first.. what gets me is that rockers never adopted graff and hip hop did..when has a rock or punk band ever used graff? Like i said this dissasociation has racial undertones to it if you ask me..and fuck seen for hating on hip hop..youtube that video
Henry Cruise like I said originally- hip hop and graffiti weren’t associated until Henry chalfant it was in style wars. Many graffiti pioneers black or white do not feel there was an association. Black and Latino writers were more exposed to the early stages of hip hop since there were MCs having parties in schoolyards. It wasn’t on the radio yet so many didn’t know it existed. There is a punk rock- graffiti connection. MACKIE aka HYPER- RTW was a drummer for the cro-mags. REVS even put out a punk rock album (but that was a little later) It’s not fair to hate on SEEN because he didn’t like hip-hop. DONDI listened to Rush, ZEPHYR listened to Zeppelin and the Grateful Dead. Hip hop didn’t hit mainstream until Rappers Delight and by then IN, BLADE, COMET, VINNY, AJAX had already painted thousands of pieces. Everyone has their own unique history.
I’ve been watching these videos for a WHILE and I’ve always wanted to buy things from art primo. I always used spray planet or whatever other sites because I can’t get good paint or even markers where I am. I got some paint, markers and streakers, I’m psyched to get it on some walls. GR, you’re a legend bro, keep doin what you’re doin. I write WAVO and I been throwing it on walls for a year or two, this ia my first time trying out flame blue, I’m stooooking
