I worked for BP at this time and this is so so true!! Do not bring up n e thing they r doing wrong r u will be eventually fired. I am a walking example of this. I would always disagree with leadership and they hated it and I did eventually get fired and was blessed by God on that day!!

Zeus Von Rafiel I don't doubt it. In 2011 I spoke one on one with Tony Hayward....he was incredibly sweet, honest, and truly sorry. He had no reason to lie to me as I have no political power or influence. It touched my heart. However, the company's safety records are horrendous....

I worked offshore for 7 years, what ever the company man says pretty much goes. I've seen oim get sent home for a replacement to keep doing the job

I worked on a land rig and whatever the company man says goes..... Common sense does not come into play when money is involved.... And this is what happens. His bonus was dwindling away and he was pissed about it.... Always, and I do mean ALWAYS, trust the tool push and driller since they are the ones in the trenches... They know what is what in ALL situations....

I've been in the northern plains oilfield more than 11 years. The rig manager (tool pusher) controls what happens from the BOP up and the company man controls what happens from the BOP down. But, ultimately, the drilling company is the vendor and the oil company is the customer. That means that the customer has the power to have his (her) way or they can change to a new vendor.

A friend of mine works on rigs here in the North Sea. He said it is unbelievably that BP did not to use heavy mud to counter the high pressure from the well. That made the rig a disaster waiting to happen.

Thomas Pham drilling in the deep ocean means heavy mud exerting force on the rock can fracture the well.

Sadly the charges against the BP employees was dropped around 2015 I believe.

Is anyone surprised? All corporations do this. The fact we have to go through so many hoops to prove they act this way is the problem.

Well I work in a nursing care facility or nursing home facility and I witnessed one time a nurse pushing crushed meds and water down an old lady's mouth who couldn't swallow and cause her to choke and then she aspirated and died a day later my friend and I are co-worker and I went to report that to the open door policy and guess what we were fired on the spot and the nurse got to keep her job and of course they covered everything up so if this happens in the oil industry and it happens in nursing homes then you know what happens in almost every job somewhere how sad is that when human lives don't matter and money and cover-ups do.

Been there, done that in the oilfield but it comes down to right and wrong. When someone from company man down to mud mixer is wrong, you shut that 'wrong process' down and do not let them continue. Daily 'cost' has nothing to do with going home alive every day. They were already so far behind that short cutting that day was assinine, it wasn't going to save anything. However, they had gotten into the habit of short cutting and not getting in trouble. And as a side note: Obama doesn't know beans about drilling nor do his advisors. Knee jerk reaction totally.

Displacing the well with seawater is not gross negligence or criminal per se. The drilling mud circulation was supposedly happening when the hydrocarbon bearing zone was isolated by cement.
The gross negligence could be invoked when BP was leaning hard on the cement contractor to model a cement job around a casing when the initial simulation results deemed it unsuccessful. They insisted that parameters should be tweaked until it became possible
Then it was decided to not verify the cement bond using the logging company which were onboard with their equipment.
The final mistake, human mistake, was to accept that a negative pressure test was successful when it was obviously not. When they tried the direct way, through the drill pipe, they could never get the pressure to zero. It would always climb back. When they tried the indirect way, through the kill line, they managed to get a zero pressure, however the drill pipe pressure was still close to 1,500 psi.
Such a discrepancy should automatically mean the negative pressure test failed.
Instead, they accepted a ludicrous explanation of the pressure difference between the drill pipe and the annular space. But this was managed at the rig site, between the operator and the drilling contractor.

I ain't no damn oil drill expert, that's for sure, but even I know it is a terrible idea to replace with seawater because the mud is just going to mix all together with that seawater. Basic science like what in the actual fuck?

BP logic: Well we are over time and budget, time to make dangerous decisions regarding drilling practice that could likely destroy the entire operation, investment, and kill people. I'll never understand some businesses that propose unacceptable risk at the 11th hour. That is the time to keep calm, keep your head down, and just work through the problem. Sure you might lose money this time, but that is nothing compared a total lose like this. Where is the money now BP? Oh right it literally went up in flames.

The problem is that nobody ever goes to jail for conduct leading to industrial accidents leading to deaths of workers and major environmental damage. It just shows that the government isn't at all serious about holding anyone to account for failing to adhere to regulations. That's because they're in bed with the leaders in industry who can sway voter opinions. The average worker to the government is seen as disposable. If industry leaders went to jail for conduct leading to deaths and environmental damage they would think twice about taking shortcuts like what lead to this preventable disaster.
