Thanks for the video! Just picked up a 68 Impala and the heater core has no hoses hooked up, so I'm pretty sure I'm getting ready to do this too. Doesn't look like much fun, but this will definitely help me out!
Jake Saul Nice!! It's not bad to do, just take your time and don't force anything. For being one of the most popular automobiles ever, parts can be a pain. Good luck!
Thanks again for the video! Pulled the old core on Saturday and got the new one installed yesterday. Went exactly as you described, including the pain-in-the-butt lower nut behind the inner fender (mine was still there, so thank God for ratcheting wrenches!) and the tight fit on the aftermarket core. Having the video made a huge difference though in knowing what to expect in advance. The heater will cook you right out of the car now!
Good video. I can tell you either purchased or had your poa valve rebuilt by classic auto air in tampa fl. I used to work for them and thats how the welder there makes his welds. One main reason why you had so much trouble trying to get the heater box in there is because those aftermarket replacement heater cores come with the tubes bent slightly at the wrong angle. If you put them up against the original you can see the difference. Its like that with quite a few different models, not just the B-bodies. Its already a tight fit and if slightly not in the right spot they can be a little bitch to install. Ive restored quite a few heater boxes.
Classic Ride Society You're absolutely right! Power Tour 2016 was a bastard without A/C, so that was priority number 1. This year we were stylin' and profilin'! Next year we will have overdrive.
Classic Ride Society We picked it up in Grand Prairie and followed it home to KC. Last year we long hauled it. What a blast!! We're hoping to long haul again in '18. It's hard to see but thumbnail is our car. 68 post sedan, 37,000 miles, 327 with a power glide.
JayHag's R/C I took quite a bit of picks while the tour stopped in grand prairie. I may have taken a picture of your car. Might try to do the power tour next yr as well.
At 4:30, you talk about clearance around the 2 pipes. Mine are touching the sides of the holes. Would you recommend enlarging the holes so the pipes do not touch the sides?
Brett Pauley No, I think it's easier to gently tweak the pipes to center with the holes because the pipes still have to cleae the firewall. Unless you clearance both sets of holes.
sorry to bump an old video, I was just wondering, did you replace your heater core for a reason? Or do you replace it even if it passes the pressure test?
I updated the A/C system. I was looking at the carpet and I saw brown streaks right underneath the heater box. Truthfully I believe my car had the heater core replaced once because this one wasn't leaking. I did it almost as a precaution for doing Power Tour as well.
Thank you for this video, I have a 65 Impala with factory A/C and need to replace a leaky heater core.
thanks brother ,ready to do mine, you really helped me.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video!

Nice. Did you do entire 2016 power tour?. If so I may have seen your car in grand prairie Texas.

Good stuff. Was the VIN stamp visible once you removed the heater cover? Having a tough time locating on my 68

Where did u get the heater core clips from?
They're the ones from the factory. If you need new ones I don't know if Year One sells them or not. Impala Bob's would be another place to check.
Doesn’t show how you took it out.
