No Beach Behind Morey's Surfside Pier? - North Wildwood Beach Erosion 2024

  • There have been a ton of questions sent our way about what the beach in North Wildwood looks like.
    Most of those questions are regarding our drone beach video we did a few weeks back. In that video, we flew the entire length of the North Wildwood Beach to show you what it looked like with the beach erosion.
    Many had questions about the water behind Morey's Surfside Pier. It is this section of the beach which has been the main issue of doing any kind of beach replenishment.
    The Wildwood Video Archive stopped by to film what the conditions were like so that visitors know for the summer season.

    Thank you for letting people know how much of a problem releasing balloons poses to fish and other aquatic wildlife. Keep spreading the message!

      Were they actually helium balloons? They might have just been tied to something and got blown away.
      Maybe we should start with not using them on party boats.

    I miss Wildwood. I haven't been in over 20 years. I always remembered how nice the beach was and there was plenty of it. It is sad to see it is disappearing.

      The North Wildwood beach has taken serious damage. The beaches of Wildwood and the Crest are in good condition.

    I remember I was there when one of the old water slides broke and people fell onto the beach. This was at the end of the pier and there was still a good bit of beach there... sorry to see this.
    Thanks for the balloon announcement. Most folks don't think about where the balloons go.

    I agree that is just Mother Nature doing her thing. In the 1960’s and 70’s the beach at Wildwood Crest was really long to get to the water. However if you went to the north end of Wildwood many times at high tied the water would come under the piers and boardwalk. So is this climate change or just natural cycles in weather patterns that have been going on for years?

  • @johnclifton8074
    @johnclifton8074 Před 5 měsíci +4

    I remember in the early 60's when I was a child the water at high tide was actually under the hunts pier and in some places under the boardwalk itself ! When I used to go there as a teen back in the 70's the beach stretched a long ways out and you'd burn your feet walking from the boardwalk to the water.
    Things just change over the years . What's the old saying: " Time and tide waiteth for no man" !

      @philliesbabe0503 Před 5 měsíci +1

      I was a pre teen in tbe 70's and remember the tide coming up to Hunt's & Sportland pier....then as time passed the long stretches to get from the boardwalk to the water's edge....
      What goes around...co.es back around.
      Thinking about this reminded me of memories of the diving shows at Sportland Pier...the Hell Hole & the Jumbo Jet. I miss those days...

    Contrary to popular belief, sea walls actually create and speed up erosion. If you look at your drone videos you'll notice the beaches without sea walls have more sand on them. The awnser is using a dredge to pump sand onto the beach with a higher elevation and rows of higher dunes for protection and something for the ocean to chew on and pull back out little by little. Trucking in sand is a complete waste of money because it doesn't compact like dredged wet sand.

    OC is my families vacay spot/ house. My x of 10 years & her family come to WW. I am Currently Down here enduring her manic bi polar episode. Having worked on the OC boardwalk in my 20s,…. I figured I would look for a job. I got hired on the spot with the tramcar. I spoke with a few returning employees… are you able to tell me why the turnover of employees is so great within this job.??
    The manager says you hang out on the boardwalk and not run over pedestrians lol. I am 37 & excited.

      Appears the state & federal government are dragging their feet. Thought I read some where that they ( Feds ) will not be able to pump much needed sand until next year. North Wildwood spent a lot of their own money to transport sand and got into hot water after they installed some needed bulkheads.

    I do not see a problem. It is not erosion, but Nature taking it's course. I remember fishing all the way in the back of Mariner's pier way back in the 60's. It eventually disappeared as the beach became larger. If you want to live & build near the water expect this. Apparently\, People think this is being caused by climate change, but that's bull crap. I also remember the ocean waves coming over into the street in North Wildwood & fishing standing on the pavement against the bulkhead when the small jetty on the corner, at the end of the avenue was almost under water at high tide.. Then you have the so called army engineers who do nothing but ruin nature by themselves. Nature eventually gets them back , as it has in North Wildwood., but people looking to make the God Almighty dollar will never learn. The old saying, " What Goes Around Comes Around " is perfect for here. Screw with mother Nature & She will get You back. Politicians & Money Hungry Builders will never learn. Wildwood use to be a great seaside vacation resort. Now it's just a Condo crap hole. Give me Cape May anytime.

    I can't help but think should I Sell, Sell, Sell, and get the heck out of North Wildwood now while the getting is good when I see these videos!!! That is horrible what is happening to our beaches here. and look at that Bulkhead there, it's all rusting out and will be needing to be fixed very soon. Why are the Wildwoods getting neglected so badly? If we were in Florida do you think Ron DeSantis would allow stuff like this to be neglected so poorly? Our Governer needs to pull his head out of his ass and help out the Wildwoods. I strongly think he needs to be Voted out of Office in favor of a Republican who will actually give a crap about NJ and the NJ Beaches/Resort Areas. I'm sorry, but I can't stand to see the Wildwoods going downhill like they area. This is not the Wildwoods that I remember growing up as a kid! Far from it!
