This was the show that made them famous. No one had head of them before they took the stage and as soon as they started their show, according to the show promoter, everyone back stage stopped what they were doing and went to watch the girls. The promoters, other bands, everyone were stunned. The girls walked off the stage international sensations.

"I didn't show my tears and in the night I was about to cry. I stayed alone in a room deep inside my heart. It wasn't only the bullies who hurt me, but also those who pretended not to notice, like my friend. Nothing [Nothing!] could I say. [Say nothing!?] I was about to give up [Don't give up!] until yesterday. [Yesterday is gone!] But good-bye to the me of yesterday. [Bye-bye!] Bullying. [Never!] Bullying. [Never!] It's disgraceful. [Never! Never! Never! Never!] Sometimes you get hurt, sometimes you hurt someone, and we all get badly hurt."
Hey Wolfeden! Good reaction! So in the western world BABYMETAL is "manufactured" in that the members didn't just organically come together and form the band. They have a producer Kei "Kobametal" Kobayashi who is a long time metal head and heard Su's unusually powerful female voice and thought it would be good for metal music. Koba is the mastermind and he calls pretty much all of the shots. That said, he chose one of the best singers of her generation, two of the best performers to accompany her, picked the best metal musicians he could find, works with some of the best song writers, etc. It may be manufacturered, and of course it's with the intent to make money, but you can tell there's more too it. There's passion there, the girls train like athletes to be able to perform the way they do, the musicians are not prima donnas but they serve the music instead of trying to make the music serve them. There's something to be said for having masters at every level come together to perform their part and make something truly great. I honestly don't think you could really do this type of thing with a western band.

Good reaction and analysis again. This was the breakthrough performance in the west and may have even been a make or break thing, but as you saw for yourself the 50,000 and more there not only accepted Babymetal, they really enjoyed them and were calling for "one more song" at the end. Babymetal's merch outsold all the other bands there for the rest of the weekend too.
I have probably said this before, but much as Babymetal didn't come together in quite the same way as metal bands in the west might have done, metal would have been the last thing any agency in Japan in 2010 would have used as something to capitalise on and to make money. If the aim had been to make money and maximise profits on sales of records, merch and anything else they would have kept the girls doing the J-pop and Idol stuff that they were already doing.
OK something with a focus on the vocals ... how about some focus on the musicians in the Kami Band followed by a Su-metal solo that is all about her vocals (no choreo in this one) Rondo of Nightmare with the Mischiefs of the Metal Gods instrumental intro live at the Budokan 2014 czcams.com/video/QxYAcIyk2Co/video.html

It's funny that you mention Trivium... Do you know that Matt Heafy is a fan of BABYMETAL ? They even hung out together quite a few times and made a photoshoot together. Matt Heafy has also uploaded videos where he covers some of their songs on his youtube channel.
Also agree with Dean Grant. You really need to forget about the fact that this band was made with a marketing intent. This was the idea of one man, a metalhead who was at the time working at the Kids division of the talent agency Amuse, and he had this idea to put Su and her powerful voice in front of a metal band, thus making an unheard of mash-up of two genres that - at first glance - shouldn't co-exist. Idol/JPop music mixed in with pure metal. This pet project of his wasn't allocated any real budget to begin with. They powered through thanks to sheer talent and hard work. NOW they have budget. But before, at its infancy, everyone thought it would be a dead project within two years - albeit fun while it lasted.
I don't think her voice gets drowned there at all. I quite like the mix at this concert.

My favorite part of 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' is still the part where Su-metal threatens to kick Yui and Moa in the head if they don't stop bullying each other. : )
Also, in this performance did you see Yui's costume start to unravel?
This song hadn't been performed since Su's 20th birthday concerts in Hiroshima, back in December 2017, but they brought it back in late January of 2020 as the encore for the second LEGEND METAL GALAXY show in Japan.

  • @mr.osclasses5054

Interesting, it seems only a few have touched upon how big a performance this was for them (I have a feeling they were expecting others to jump on it, but "The One" are very polite and like to give others the opportunity). Given that, I will volunteer myself and hope I pass the test of accuracy. So, as some have said this was where they broke out in the western music scene. They had been booked for a secondary stage at this festival, but a month or so before a scheduling issue with another band left an opening, so they moved BABYMETAL to the main stage to open the show on Saturday. The girls were a bit nervous, as expected, but from their vantage point backstage they couldn't see the crowd, so they thought almost no one was there.
They had been warned that UK metal fans are some of the rowdiest out there and that they might get boo'd off stage, or worse, have bottles and other stuff thrown at them (apparently some festival-goers had threatened to online beforehand). Still, they went out on stage and saw a sea of 60,000+ faces and made the split-second decision between fight or flight that they were going to own this crowd and win them over. Their set was five songs, with this being the final one. By the end of this song, as the girls gave their trademark "See you!" exit, the crowd was loudly chanting "We want more!" Their merch. outsold all other bands for the rest of the weekend and they started getting write-up's for western metal magazines, blogs, etc. The rest is pretty much history.
These girls, now young women, have been winning people over with their brand of music for a decade now. I have only been a fan for a couple months, but they have breathed new life into my music listening more than any other group or album has since the Hamilton soundtrack came out in 2015 or 2016. I only hope I will be able to see them in concert sometime in the next year, and I will gladly fly somewhere to make it happen!

Nice reaction and analysis again. You timed your first pause super well, look at Su's stare :D
After that, I don't know if it's my problem, but your sound kinda sounds like it has the treble all the way tuned up to the max or the video is playing twice, almost simultaneously. It's hard to describe. After your next pause everything was good again.
I think the thing with the band overpowering the voice in this instance is a well known "problem" at festivals. I watch Rock am Ring every year and this happens with 2/3 of all the bands. Even Serj Tankian from System of a Down was drowned out all the time a few years ago. Maybe they don't get enough time for soundchecks or something? In this case here they had about 15 minutes from knowing they are pushed to the main stage and performing live in front of 60k people (15 min is probably exaggerated, but it wasn't that much longer).
Su's solo songs are always great to let her voice shine. The two best options here on CZcams are probably Akatsuki (czcams.com/video/g2372C5PJLM/video.html) and Rondo of Nightmare (czcams.com/video/QxYAcIyk2Co/video.html).
They are both on par vocal wise and both great songs but I'd recommend Akatsuki, because the band shines more throughout the whole song than in Rondo of Nightmare. Rondo has the epic intro, but to say it with Ohmura Takayoshi's (the guitarist with the pink guitar) words: the song is easy for the band and Su's the genius for nailing the vocals every time. Rondo is also probably BABYMETAL's darkest song.

Sound was really bad at Glastonbury last year, although some of that may have been just the broadcast feed. (I wasn't there.) For example, only one kickdrum in the mix. Still, I was blown away by Suu's vocals on Shanti Shanti Shanti. I was like "OMG, Su-chan!" on the first hearing.

    Rururu…
    Aah…
    Dreaming
    I couldn’t have even it
Between the light and the darkness
    I stayed alone
    Those who got hurt were
    not only I myself
but also those who kept on watching me
    It was you
    Confidence
    Have it!
    I couldn’t have
    Don’t be beaten!
    I kept on hiding
    I dislike to be found!
    until yesterday
    Yesterday is gone!
    But good-bye to yesterdays’ myself
    Bye-bye!
    Bullying. No!
    Bullying. No!
    It’s disgraceful
    No! No! No! No!
    Sometimes you get hurt
    sometimes you hurt someone
and we all get badly hurt
    Fox, Fly!
    Fox, Fly!
    I’m sure you can fly
    Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly!
    Let your pain and sadness
    all go outside!
It’s OK because I’ll protect you
    I didn’t show my tears
and in the night I was about to cry
in a room deep inside my heart
    I stayed alone
    Those who hurt me were
    not only someone else
but also those who pretended not to notice
    It was my friend
    Nothing!
    Nothing!
    could I say
    Say nothing?
I was about to give up
    No easy throwing out!
    until yesterday
    Yesterday is gone!
    But good-bye to yesterdays’ myself
    Bye-bye!
    Bullying. No!
    Bullying. No!

    Aching…
    All the while…
    Alone…
    Your heart…
    Pretending not to notice…
    Anymore…
    I’ll never get away
    Bullying, No, Absolutely
    Full of dearest-ness
    it’s pressuring
    but also encouraging
    Anymore…
    anymore your…
I don’t want to see anymore your tearful face
    Bullying. No!
    Bullying. No!

The argument of BABYMETAL being a manufactured product has lost it weight after their 2016 2nd album release. When their 3rd album were put on sale, only the gatekeeper of the gatekeepers still harbour resentment towards them. The most lame excuse was that they weren't singing in english. I wonder what the excuse will be if they release a 4th album.

When your videos first start out the audio is fine, but once you pause once and start up again, it sounds as if there are two audio-sources for the video you're watching.

At your 1st pause I was surprised you said nothing about Su's expression. If you're going to continue with Babymetal, be very careful about watching Su's eyes. There is fierceness in her stare reflecting her control of the performance. It will burn right though you.
Everyone BE SAFE, sheltering in California.

Some of their "official live" videos (released by Babymetal's CZcams) definitely have some post-production work done to polish them. I don't know why because I think their live performances are better than them trying to overlay the studio tracks. If you ever buy a concert Bluray you will hear them real live and they're awesome. Now when I see their official "live" music videos I don't like them as much. The live sounds so much better. It's hard to tell though unless you actually hear them on their concert Bluray.

I sometimes get frustrated when the sound mixing is bad and Su-Metal can’t be heard. Fortunately, Babymetal performs a lot and I can almost always find a good video. 😎👍

You did not Watch The whole video... you cut off the best part... of "See you" and the crowd chanting "we want more we want more" You know Sonisphere is famous for ppl throwing bottles of piss at bands they don't like right?? instead of that being thrown at the girls chants of we want more we want more we want more were thrown their way. why watch a vid if you are not going to watch the whole thing??
