- Is the Sony A7R III still worth it in 2024? Sony has released dozens of cameras since the release of the A7R III back before the pandemic. With rumors of an A7R V coming in the fall, does it still make sense to buy this older camera? Well in my a7r iii review I compare the cameras specs to newer models and try to weigh the pros and cons against how much these newer models will cost. All in all, the Sony A7R III is still an amazing camera, even all these years later.

You have to think about it. When this camera came out for the first time, it was the best and professional photographers got the best-looking pictures and video from it. If you're just starting to do photography and you want to take a really good photo, then you don't need a $5,000 rig to capture the images. You just need experience and also, when you edit a picture through adobe or any other software, editing is to improve you picture. Not to fix pictures. I have a Canon EOS 80D and whenever I take a shot of someone, they always tell me that it's a really good photo. Even other professional photographers have told me that. All you need to have been experience and how to use each setting right. Yeah, you might want to get a better camera overtime and that's great, but it isn't always about the money. It's how you use it. Hopefully this helps for people that seem unclear of what to get when choosing a camera.

I sold the Canon 80D and bought the Sony a6600, a newer camera is definitely more versatile, it is easier to push photos when you are editing them in case you have made a mistake.
100 percent. Newer cameras may perform better as far as features. But regardless of what body you have, if you have the right glass and skills you’re going to get great images. Next to that, the client doesn’t look at the minute details like us creatives. They can’t tell 80d from a74 etc etc.
The A7Riii's sensor is my favorite that I have ever used. I also have the A7iv but the A7riii photos just have an extra level of detail that I like.
After using so many Sony cameras, I came to the conclusion that A7Riii has the best AWB of them all. I even tried different CFL and LED lights and A7Riii was still doing well. The other Sony cameras in the same light went green or orange. Having a good WB starting point makes image editing much easier.

Just purchased my Sony A7Rlll and Man im excited to take new photos with this thing. Of course, this is a major upgrade from my Sony A6000 so im very excited.
Well I have a7iv and a7riii , I think that extra mpx in the riii is great but not noticeable in the real use also a7iv the af speed and the new color science its incredible but the riii still a great second camera or main for photography
Yes! I sold my A7RIV and A7IV and bought the A7RIII again. It is by far the best one I've used.

@@KingsCapture it's a good camera, but in my experience I've had it and 3 A7RIIi's and never had a blurry picture. The A7RIV bigger mp but slower speeds. I had blurry pictures. I'm all modes. So could have been the body? Idk.. But no problems with the III

The A7RIII was years ahead of it's time. The sensor is still the highest rated of any Sony cameras for image quality and it's great in low light and even night photography. It lacks the bells and whistles of more recent models but it's a workhorse that is as solid as any other mirrorless cameras, much less than Sony cameras. 📸💪

Sold my Riv and kept the Riii as my main
I've bought A7R3 when it released in 2017 and been shooting it ever since. That body has circled the world several times, no issues yet.
Same for mine. Exceptional camera.
People are questioning it? I was still using my 5d mark iii for professional shoots for years until last year. People nerd out about fancy features to the point the camera in the future will probably shoot for you
I've just dusted off my A7Riii, which has been my (unused) backup camera for three whole years. I was using an A7iii, which is now up for sale. The same camera in so many ways, but dang, the A7Riii files are quite spectacular. All the hybrid peeps want 10 bit video, but if you're just doing stills, the A7Riii is insane value for money, when you look at the used prices, and consider what you're getting.
Absolutely right. I had a similar experience going back and forth from the RIII to the A7C. The R is just soooo good

I've been looking to upgrade to a full frame camera and after looking at all of my options within this price range i've found the a7riii to be the best bang for the buck and the perfect camera for my personal needs. Its kinda like a swiss army knife being that it can do a little bit of everything. Its great in low light wich is good for long exposure and astro photography. The number of autofocus points and the 10fps shooting is more than adequate for wildlife and sports photography. Plus the higher megapixels will help with macro photography or any shots that you need to crop in close on without losing detail. Not to mention the 4k video capabilities. Canon has solid offerings for around the same price point with the rp and the r8 but neither of those have dual card slots which is very important if you intend to turn photography into a business. The last thing you want is to be shooting someone's wedding and have a card malfunction resulting in the loss of all your clients photos.

Coming from a7iii to a7riii, i might miss some slight agility and sensor af coverage BUT i got high refresh rate evf, 42mp, pixel shift, expected 500k shutter life, and rugged body.

I'm upgrading to an A7RIII, while my well used A7III and A7II will be backups. The extra MPs will allow me to get more reach out of my existing lenses, still getting 12MP in APSC mode. More than ok in Wedding and Event photography. Thanks to your video, which just reinforces my decision.

It's actually 18mp in crop mode and still looks great. I shoot in crop mode often as I use all primes. Nobody will ever say that it is low resolution even printing fairly large

Ive had the Sony A65 for the past 14 years and its been a strong power house for me over the course of its life, but I am now ready to upgrade, and I am going for the A7RIII. I am excited.

I have the same question, I'm also mainly shooting stills. From what I've heard, the a7c is better in low light but the a7riii has much better AF as it uses the new AI AF.

With the release of the a7r5, i snagged myself another cheap r3 body, i now have a7r6 lol, most of the time i shoop on super 35 mode... 18 megapixels is good enough for what i do. heck ive been shooting 12 megapixel cameras and did good for magazine prints
I am not going to buy the R5. I don’t need 8k, and definitely not the megapixels. I’ll be sticking with my trusty R3 for another cycle it seems!

Find a a7R IIIA for a good price and go have fun. It's still a great camera: excellent image quality and nice AF. It's not the best in AF but the sensor is still impressive.

I upgraded from a Nikon DSLR and hate my A7RIII, the focus has never been accurate. I want to love this camera.
That’s interesting. I came from a Nikon d850 as well. I would concede the focusing isn’t as accurate, but it doesn’t often cause me issues - I find it to still be very good. Hopefully your copy isn’t messed up some way!
how focus on mirrorless camera (so, focusing is done via sensor) can't be precise? probably not set correctly or some fault on lense etc..

A7R III costs 1400€ and A7R IV costs 1900€. Do you think the bigger focus area and speed makes A7R IV a better purchase considering the small price gap? I do mostly portrait and street photography with my A7R.
Depends on what that money means to you! For many that’s a rent payment. If it’s not a big deal, go for the IV!
I can’t even with these people lol the a7r3 will be STILL GOOD 10 years from now.
Animals only move so fast, humans are only ever going to move so fast vehicles are only ever going to move so fast, etc. if you can’t track all those things now with existing technology then even if they drop a $50,000 camera in your lap, you’re gonna be hopeless.
We don’t need microsecond accurate super duper slow-mo in our cameras. We don’t need 100 megapixels. We don’t need 12K video.
I know CZcams people have to keep putting out videos, but I mean come on already. You could think of a better topic than this.
There are 12 year-old DSLR‘s that still take amazing pictures… just as amazing as they did 12 years ago, and if you would put the pictures up against modern cameras with the same megapixels, you couldn’t tell the difference.
The best pictures ever taken in the history of photography were taken using hardware much more primitive than what we use now, and there’s an upper limit to usable resolution, and we are running up against it.
But the only thing I could think of as a feature to add to cameras that would prove useful, possibly, is a switch to change to infrared on the fly instead of having to modify the existing sensor or whatever they do.
Yes, the Sony A7RIII are still an excellent Camera in 2022 and in the future if 42 Mp are enough for you and it have a price that are less than the 33 Mp Sony A7IV, so what´s not to like !!! Get the Sony A7RIII.

Hi, I am an r3 user. If you take photos frequently, I recommend the r3. Even now, the image quality of the r3 is still ranked T0 T1 in full frame. But if you have a strong demand for video, I recommend the s5II. The s5ii has better support for video and also has 10bit. You can also consider the a7m4 or a7cII. The colors of Panasonic are more pleasing. For the r3, you need to make some simple settings on the camera, and then slightly adjust the colors later, which will be very good In addition, the s5ii body is slightly heavier than the r3. The lighter the equipment, the more willing you will be to take it out. Then the r3 will have a richer lens to choose from, including some lightweight lenses.

For my part, I would recommend saving the money and buying a used RIII. It’s an older body, and prices are really low! But it’s really just a matter of what the money means to you. The 7IV is a newer body with a few new features - but it will cost a little more!

A7IV hands down, specially if you do any video.
I actually just sold my A7RIII and bought the A7IV, if you do video and photos, it is a no brainer. The A7RIII was amazing but I needed a B-cam to my FX3 and less than 10 MP difference is not much really.
I don’t use the Riii for video. The 4K crop is….prohibitive for sure. Definitely has its limitations on the video front

Either move is good! If you are taking more photos, probably the riii, if more video - the 7iii. Hope this helps!
Just a perspective: I recently did just that, and am very pleased with the results. The riii is much more 'finished' everywhere you look. On the other hand, I was going to sell the ii to help pay for the riii, but can't quite get myself to part with it. Smaller and lighter, the ii has a cachet of its own, particularly with a smallish prime.. I think i is a keeper.
@@DanielWOstler ill have to piggyback off this. I have use the mkii for a while and wanted to upgrade. However, what stopped me from leaving the mkii was adding a GM lens. The GM lenses really kick the photos up a notch. I’ll probably move to the mk3r for the larger battery and silent shutter.
I know you touched on the AF, looking to shoot animals, any more insight on that with the riii ?
I have used the RIII to shoot sports, and never found it lacking. I would assume you’d be okay to shoot wildlife. I do know that in later Sony releases, Eye AF has been extended to animals - so that may be worth considering. This does not have eye AF for animals.
The really nice shots in the video show off what the A7R3 can deliver. For stills this is a wonderful camera still at a good price!

No. Not vs. newer models. It's too slow and the AF in the III was terrible.

An A9 would be more efficient with 10 more fps. I used an a9 for 5 years as a photojournalist and freelance fashion photographer. I’m actually here to switch to the A7RIII since I’m not running around chasing photo stories and doing more studio and set up shots 🙌🏽
If strictly doing sports I'd go with a used a9. The a9 has twice the AF computations per second and black out free shooting. The Riii is capable and I shot football and skateboarding regularly with mine with no problem. I also used to shoot sports in the film days so it can be a user issue. I still shoot skateboarding with manual focus lenses on my Riii half the time.
There are better cameras with higher fps shooting and more auto focus points but I think this camera would do just fine for sports. I mean 10 photos in one second is still a lot. More than that seems like overkill to me but to each their own

I use mostly a Tokina 85mm F1.8 that I bought on 淘宝 for 200€. It has better optics than the Viltrox and it’s cheaper

Thank you for giving me reassurance that I don’t need to ditch my A7RIII for a newer model…However I do have one thing that is killing me….The colors, especially shooting portraits…What do you do about those color hues?
I came to the A7RIII from a Canon 5DIII, and seeing as you used to be a Nikon guy, I’m pretty sure you know what I’m talking about…Even though the Canon’s AF doesn’t stand a chance next to the Sony, I often find myself grabbing the Canon for portraits just because I know I’d be getting absolutely WAY nicer colors straight out of cam.
I have developed a number of presets that I use for my professional work. I came from Nikon before the Sony, so I’m used to working with difficult colors. For wedding work, I find the Martin Labs Fuji Pro 400 H preset pack to be delightful! Overexpose your shots slightly, and that’s the look most brides want!
If you want to try it yourself, figure out what it is about the Canon colors you like and try to replicate it. Canon seems for have more prevalent reds.

I'm looking to buy my first big boy camera. The A7RIII fits my price range. My only question is, is that i want to start trying to take pictures of families, maternity pictures. It can deliver camera performance alright, the only potential limiting factor is artistic side like framing, lights and post processing skills.
I was looking around at used A7R III's on MPB. Got a trade in quote from them for me to trade my Canon 90D, Sigma 24-70 2.8 and Canon 100-400 ii, said they would pay me $560. Is it worth it?

The lenses that I use all have their own videos on my channel. This video was making a specific point and is not a comprehensive review. Sony 24 1.4, sigma 85 1.4 dg dn, Sony 24-70 2.8 II, Voigtlander 50mm APO.
@@Overexposed1 Thank you! I have a a7r3 that I use as a hobby and am looking to upgrade some of my lenses. I have a few "modern" lenses for it, but have been also shooting with some adapted vintage lenses.

Battery size alone makes the upgrade worth it. I found the old, tiny Sony battery to be limiting!

Having used the A7iii, a7riii, a7iv and a7riv, the a7riii is probably the best sweet spot.
It’s gotten cheap enough used that you can get a great lens to go with its 42mp sensor. The af is great and it handles amazing. The only thing you’d be missing out on is the 61mp but for me I just don’t need all that.
I have the camera and it is far more then want I need I would bet that 90 percent of photograph’s are viewed on A cell phone or computer screen

Thanks so much for watching!! Sony has a 90mm 2.8 lens that is fantastic for macro photography and would also serve you well for portraits. Sony also has a 20mm 1.8 lens that is amazing for video, and landscape photography. If your price range allows it, the older 55 1.8 lens is a tremendous value and is an exceptional all-purpose lens. Those lens are all tack sharp and will suit you well!

my friend, you should use sony A7c for your videos, because your face on this video, is out of focus and its very annoying. its just a tip.
The issue was the Sony 24 1.4. It focus breaths like a wild man, so you have to lock down focus - and sometimes you miss. Anyway, this video is going on a year old and now I use a 24-70 II which doesn’t breath.
Look at the newer content. The issue has long since been fixed.
