my favourite christmas carol of all time superbly sung,,,,takes me back in time ,i sang it in school in the 1970s, beautiful song .
The greatest sound of the holidays...Without this group of talented young men it just wouldnt feel the same
It is not necessary to believe in the life everlasting in order to appreciate the side of our human nature which can produce such beautiful sounds. There is comfort there.

I remember learning this at school over fifty years ago and it’s one of my favourites. It’s wonderful to go to an event like this in a building that’s hundreds of years old, the atmosphere is incredible,you can almost feel the past around you and the people who went before.
Can't wait for such a day!

To take nothing away from the skill of the choir and the gentlemen singers, and the acoustic of this grand Kings College space but I must say the sound team recording this did an amazing job. Every voice, every note, clear as a bell. Liquid gold for the ears.

He directed in New York at Saint Thomas before being called to succeed Stephen at King's. Wonderful with tye boys.
@@jamestrager551 Daniel Hyde was previously organist at King's. He is simply returning home.
@@ds1868 Dan was at Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford when he came to us in a search that followed the sudden death of John Scott.
@@jamestrager551 Daniel was previously organ scholar at King's and graduated from the University of Cambridge. The academic hood he is wearing is MA (Cantab). I don't care what he was doing in NYC, he has come home and we are very pleased to have him back.
I was introduced to this carol when I sang it with my 6th form choir - a great arrangement. I'm catching up with the broadcast on Christmas Day as I missed it on Christmas Eve ☺️

The loss of long-time Stephen Cleobury AND Covid, and somehow Kings still performs!
When a choral director moves on or retires, he or she will be replaced, so there's no question of not carrying on. It was just the same in 1982 when Stephen Cleobury succeeded Philip Ledger. Covid posed a greater challenge to carrying on, but thanks to the King's Singers, and contingency planning in the midst of the pandemic, that challenge was overcome - and magnificently!
That's because this is not simply the work of a particular group of people. This service is a work of God. It brings joy to people all over the world every year.

For those that believe heaven does not exists, think again… Certainly for me, this is a heavenly sound. Beautiful carol makes the heart and soul melt. Truly one of the best pieces ever composed and sung..
1:19 - 1:23 , 2:34-2:44 some of the best sounds I’ve ever heard in my entire life
I was thinking, "Ah this person likes the same sounds i do!" That and the part where they begin saying oh That we were there, culminating in the final time they say it at the end with the triple note rise at the end. Sublime.
Especially the Tenor at 2:34 - 2:44. Dude took me to tears with the expression

I sang this in my school choir at a Harlow comprehensive school in the 60s, inspired by two fantastic music teachers, Brian Barnes and Michael Frith. Harlow kids singing in Latin. Wonderful memories evoked by this wonderful choir at King's. Thank you.
