    I’ve been messing around with one of these lately. As you said, with the UHF antenna it’s not a good idea to transmit on VHF but it surprised me how well it receives VHF. I can get the nearest weather band repeater (a county away, at least 15 miles!) and in town I can listen to the local police and 911 dispatch. If only it wasn’t so loud!

    • @mowtown75
      @mowtown75 Před 2 lety +1

      Yes an untuned antenna will still RX quite well, however you would get 15+ miles if the antenna was tuned to VHF :) Please be aware that if you TX on your radio in VHF it will shorten the life of the radio. See google or youtube for swr. Untuned antennas are not resonant, so they dont emit all of the RF energy, a significant amount is reflected back to the radio that causes heat and damage to the transmitter part. Cheers. Tim

    Hi Fred, thanks for the video. Nice clear images and commentary style. One thing which does puzzle me - all references that I can find to the minimum frequency step size on this radio state 12.5KHz, obviously meaning on 'round number' 12.5Khz steps like .0000 , .0125, .0250, .0375, 0500, .0625, .0750, .0875 and so on. I was a little bit surprised to see you apparently programming the PMR446 frequencies with their +6.25 Khz offsets straight into the software and into the radio without any complaint or objection from the software. Does the radio really accept these spot frequencies or does it just adopt the nearest 12.5Khz step, which in the case of PMR446 channels will be about half a channel out? Have you any way of measuring the actual transmitted frequency?

    • @CB-RADIO-UK
      @CB-RADIO-UK  Před 5 lety

      Sadly not. At the time of testing they seemed on freq for the 446 PMR.

    • @siriusmicromaniac
      @siriusmicromaniac Před 5 lety

      I've had the chance to play with one of these now - the situation re: frequency programming resolution isn't nearly as bad as I feared. When programmed wth PMR446 frequencies for a test, all TX frequencies were within about 200Hz of the displayed frequency, which is not too bad on 12.5Khz spaced channels. It looks like the 'step sizes' of 12.5Khz / 25Khz mentioned in the spec really refer to the two switchable channel bandwidths (especially the deviation, or 'width' of the modulated TX signal).

    Isn't PMR446 like FRS and GMRS in the US? If so isn't using that radio with those channels technically not allowed? IDK I am not in the UK but I am curious.
    I don't see why this radio would not be OK for FRS, it's under 2 watts and has a non removable antenna, but in the US we get this A LOT- "That's a HAM RADIO!!", "That's ILLEGAL!, The FCC is going to do this or that.." it's really entertaining at some of the shit these anal retentive people make up

    • @CB-RADIO-UK
      @CB-RADIO-UK  Před 6 lety

      Yes your quite right that the T1 is not 100% legal as a PMR radio down to its power output. I dont think its much above 0.5 watts to be honest. Some people stick to 1 mph below the speed limit whilst driving ALWAYS and they normally like to point out that this radio or that radio is not approved and you should be shot on sight etc. In reality your normally ok as long as you have programed the radio correctly.

    • @Elfnetdesigns
      @Elfnetdesigns Před 6 lety +1

      It's really entertaining here because it's usually the older generation ham ops that give others flak (newer generation or people looking to get into the hobby) about radios like this yet in reality they themselves have a baofeng loaded to the gills with the very frequencies that are telling you not to put in your radio and when you call them on it they are all like "BUT MUH EMERURGENCA COMMS".
      Or the LOVE to use the old worn out fear tactics that the FCC will raid your house, shoot your dog, take your radios and throw you in jail and give you a HUGE fine you can never pay all because you used a Chinese radio on FRS channels... It's ridiculous yet entertaining especially when an FCC field rep chimes in and verifies they are not going to do such a thing. Then it turns into a conspiracy or the FCC person is a Troll..
      The imaginations of old senile ham ops in America is quite entertaining sometimes yet sad..

    • @thierry_r
      @thierry_r Před 4 lety

      @Steve Terry Yes, PMR 446 is limited as 500mW ERP (Equivalent Radiated Power) . It means 500mW on the air.
      The power max is 1000mW but the antenna is small.

This has a detachable antenna so it's also not approved here in UK. The PMR with fixed antennas are fine and legal but these are not approved unless you have a licence on the lower frequencies for HAM use.
