Do we actually know the details about Earthy, I read from Ex that he actually left Hospital Sunday evening not as alluded to by the media and club Monday morning. Hopefully means it wasn't as serious as first appeared. The protocols for this are no action for 6 days,light training. Then in the clubs statement 2-4 weeks recovery. The club often gets it messages wrong. I think this would be the case if he was kept in over night. The most staggering and sobering thing for me is that what Leverkusen have done to put themselves in the position they are in is not difficult. It is, in fact, simplicity itself. It's looked upon with stunned reverence and what they do deserve credit for is the successful implementation of it BUT the approach itself is the very definition of common sense and it staggers me why clubs like ours (and many others) struggle to comprehend it. Taking that as their base they then added the second most obvious ingredient. A coach who can actually COACH. Shock horror. Who would have thought it. Will wonders never cease. So you have a well run club that has a clear and coherent plan (for both short and long term) coupled with an excellent coach and lo and behold the end result is success.
I think the hype of the premier league and being in it just makes clubs like ours lazy. The amount of money we have wasted is obscene but we can almost get away with it because being in the premier league is just a license to print more. Leverkusen could simply NEVER afford to make the transfer errors we have as it would probably see them go into liquidation. They HAVE to be smart. They HAVE to be so on point spending the money that they have because a missed step could be catastrophic. That knowledge must really sharpen their senses and as a result it pushes them (by necessity) to consider EVERYTHING they do. We, by contrast, throw money around with gay abandon akin to a rich drunk in a casino. They FULLY deserve to be in the position they are in. We (and I mean Sullivan) fully deserve the position we find ourselves in due to the short sightedness, wastefulness, amateur and shameful way we have been run.
I WISH Gonzo was right. I wish it hit Sullivan in the face like an epiphany and he saw the light. That he put aside his ego and went to Tim and said "help me". That he asked for guidance on how to replicate it for our club. No matter how much I wish for it though I know it won't happen. It will just join the long long long list of staggeringly obvious things that Sullivan has ignored (or not even recognised) that would benefit our club.
As for Thursday's game...........Heart says we win 3-0 with a barn storming British style performance and a crowd that shakes our Meccano stadium to pieces. My head though says..............out with barely a whimper.

Great comment Nick - so many ppl forget that in October '22, Leverkusen were 17th in their table after 6 games, in comes Alonso and ends the season in 6th place - they only spent 50m in the summer and have gone unbeaten (so far), and won the Bundesliga with plenty of games left - so it can happen

You also need to draft players not only for talent but also for character. That's not easy when we are talking about twenty-something year old Millionaires that grew up under circumstances where money was a lot scarcer. Those players are rarer to find than you think.

After the Fulham game - I can’t see a way for West Ham to at least get 2-0 and force extra time . Leverkusen look like they could take on any side currently and win. They look like Man City on a good day. This could be the last European night for West Ham in a while so I hope those fans able to go enjoy the occasion and sing with passion and pride.

I made the mistake of watching Leverkusen on Sunday, I doubt they will sub par for our match. They love their football, you can see it. The league was won when they went 2-0 but they still went for the 3rd, the fourth and the fifth.
It’s the sort of attitude and belief we can only dream of.
The only way we win is if they don’t turn up.
Think Scarles is injured too, hasn't been playing for the under 21s. Totally agree Gonzo, to be in this position with no players to use is a disgrace.
My prediction is we will try keep it tight and try nick a set piece goal late on.

Leverkusen are a machine! They really only play one way and that is a battering ram straight down the middle. They will always have a load of shots in a game and, eventually, one or tw will go in. Its not rocket science, they just grind teams down until they crack. Thats why so many goals are scored late on. No team has taken the game to them! Some have tried and failed quickly. I believe the answer is to push the ball out wide onto the wings. They will always pass the ball back to the middle of the park and drive forward. We just lack the speed, the confidence, the skills to be able to get behind them down the flanks.

352 isn’t a formation we’ve played since 20-21 and even that was a 343 out of formation then Fornals would tuck into cam in possession and Bowen become a second striker.
The main way I see us scoring is through set pieces. Yes we have to get them first but Antonio drifting into the left channel and kudus in the right channel will be our only route of ball progression regardless of the XI we play. It’ll be a really tough task and will be a thankless and exhausting 90 mins (or 60 for Antonio) but the only way I see us getting anything out of them. Antonio was sensational in the first leg and didn’t have any support whereas with Kudus he would get that. Soucek can also break into the box with Alvarez and JWP behind him. Johnson has been fearless with a lot of his recent performances so I’d go with him at LWB. I would’ve put him at RWB with Scarles LWB but I’m not willing to chuck Ollie into a game of such magnitude even though it feels like a dead rubber, any mistakes he could make will dent his confidence which I wouldn’t want (I also believe he’s injured).
Once we win those corners, JWP comes into play. Sad to say this is the only reason I’d play him but with the 3 big cbs coming up for the corners alongside Soucek, Alvarez & Antonio, we have an opportunity to cause a lot of problems from set pieces - like you say the only problem is getting them. I’d like to see every throw in in our final third be a long one with Antonio taking the left side and Coufal the right. Again, this is our only route to goal so let’s go full Pulis.
We have a slim chance on Thursday and this preview made me laugh a lot especially with Gonzo’s reaction to the team news. The testicular cancer awareness really puts things into perspective in football just being a game and there being a lot more to life.

The biggest reason to sell a player is to keep your player salaries at a manageable level. We had a lot of clubs in the Bundesliga which didn't watch their player salaries close enough and got destroyed or almost destroyed by it.
Manchester Utd would be such a current example as they are stuck with unmoveable overpriced players. But then its the Premier League and you could sell the Club anytime bringing in fresh money.

A manager of 1000+ games ain’t as streetwise as a manager in his first proper job and we were clearly not told to get Wirtz booked and out of the second leg - Alonso clearly did tell them to get Paqueta and Emerson booked
Obviously Wirtz is now full of confidence after a hattrick on Sunday
With that tiny detail, our chances are gone of turning the game around in the second leg
As for Sullivan, he doesn’t give a toss about what Leverkusen or West Ham, especially West Ham four years down the road

I thought Lanzini and Kehrer were real quality players but they weren't part of the squad rotation and were rusty when called upon.

Thinking positively with lotsa luck&playing well with VAR going our way and an early goal & a penalty I'm hoping&praying for a miraculous 3-0 before ET.
Realistically I feel even if we go 1 or 2 up even up 'till the 80th minute they'll turn up the heat using all 5 subs to change formation & score 3 before extra time cos our defence is too weak&leaky, they're super confident, we're not.
On the night I think it'll end 2-4.
Agree with all that has been said about the transfer window and I’m equally as angry about it but I’m stunned at the negativity in this video, we have to have hope, it’s 11 v 11 anything can happen, look at what Qarabag did against them, score the first goal with anything more than twenty mins left and the crowd playing a part, anything can happen.

Have no faith that Moyes will set us up correctly. All of Moyes experience has hardened his views, rather than giving him greater options. It might be one of those games, where an enforced substitution happenchance's upon a solution, but in reality 1-3 I believe.

My take on the team Moyes will put out. He’ll stick with 3 at the back he’ll play Johnson and Coufal as wing backs, alverez souchek & JWP as a midfield, with Antonio - Kudus up top. Ward-Prowse will play cos Moyes knows our best chance of scoring is from a dead ball situation because apart from getting the ball to Antonio and Kudus and hoping they can take the entire Leverkusen midfield and defence on we have no creativity or outlet whatsoever.

I'd put Johnson in the middle with Alvarez and hope he finds his inner Beckenbauer like he did v Sheff utd. Leave Cresswell at left back. Push Soucek forward to be more Fellaini (or put JWP there). That then gives us the option to play Cornet on the wing with Kudus and Antonio up front
