  • 2024 Toyota Highlander Hybrid review by The Straight Pipes. The Highlander is putting down a combined 243 horsepower and ??? lb-ft of torque from a 2,5L 4 cylinder hybrid. At $54,020 CAD, would you take it over the Grand Highlander or would you rather get a Highlander and let it get stolen off your driveway in Toronto?

    I have almost this exact vehicle, even same color (minus the nightshade package, no heated steering wheel, and 2nd row bench seat). Got on waitlist in June of 2023 and bought it in Dec of 2023. Paid sticker after calling a few dealers, my local dealer wanted $2,500 or so over on all Toyota hybrids. I have about 3K miles on it. Hybrid system makes it drive so smooth. Only issue is it has turned me into a slow Prius type driver, I get passed all the time driving at or slightly below the speed limit, trying to stay under the acceleration point where the gas engine kicks in. "There can be only one."

    My dad has a 2020 highlander hybrid. Bought it in July 2020. The lots were full of them at the time. $4500 off sticker. I bought his 2015 V6 highlander from him. We love them both. The mpgs on the hybrid are awesome. 5 Toyotas in 24 years. Love them.

    Not really surprised it took a while to review this one. I was shopping for one in August, and there were none to be had that weren't already sold. Couldn't wait the duration needed to get one, so ended up with a VW Tiguan, which I concur with your assessment. Solid choice, and powertrain is....adequate.

    Hey Guys, just caught your video this morning and really appreciate the Hybrid viewpoint.
    We ordered a Highlander Limited Hybrid in April 2022 and just received notification that we can expect it sometime within the next 3 months, which will bring us to the two year point.
    Our locked in price is almost $2000 below MSRP which is great, the issue we have is because of the two year wait the vehicle price has approximately $2000 more, 2022 vs 2024, and the value of our trade dropped by $8000, so we are looking at a $10000 difference in total price.
    We are planning to take delivery of the new vehicle for two reasons, one is the anticipated fuel savings which should be 50% of what we currently use and secondly we simply need the space, we now have 5 grandkids and our current vehicle is a 5 seater.
    Keep up the great work guys.

    We got a ‘21 Limited Hybrid and love it. Wife appreciates the 360 camera, we appreciate the 33mpg while fully loaded, I’m not a big fan of the 20” rims. Car is awesome. We got it at MSRP. I rented a non-hybrid much lower trim and it was great. More peppy, rode better (on 18” rims), and I didn’t miss any of the fancy features. I think i got 26mpg but it was just me in it. ECVT is only annoying if you’re kicking it, which doesn’t really happen cause it’s a family hauler. Love it.

    It's very ok. I had mine for almost a year now, build date of march 23. Since then the trans has had to be reflashed, the roof leaked at 900 miles and Toyota did not detune the 2.4t enough from the lexus iterations, so until the recent TSB (which you have to fight dealers for), running 89+ was required to prevent hesitations and surging at low rpm.
    At 12k now and it's fine. Now that the tuning is correct. Doing it again I likely would have went hybrid or to a cx90.

    • @Suction_
      @Suction_ Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@reikasdad3rd row on the HL is definately better, but not by much. They're both very much 'in a pinch' seats or perfect for 6-12 year olds. The only real drawback to cx90 was second row room, highlander is a large margin better, which I needed for rear facing car seats. CX70 supposedly fixes that.
      cx90 has a WAY better interior. Like, lexus level. I'm sure they don't have the idiotic roof rails toyota has where they leak constantly. Also, the bose system vs the JBL in the HL obliterates it, by a substantial margin.

    I have one for work and I absolutely love it! It’s comfortable, smooth and fairly fuel efficient for its size. The two things I hate is the older Toyota infotainment system and the glair from the LED headlights which make people flash their lights at me all the time because they think I have the high beams on.

    • @WaylonDog
      @WaylonDog Před 4 měsíci +1

      I only made the mistake of flashing my brights at a Highlander once, they flashed back at me and I was blinded so bad I had to pull over. I think they fixed most of the glare for 2021, but I still hate driving my Camry at night, because most SUV headlights are at my eye level.

    I have a 2023 platinum hybrid and back in Sept, drove from Southern Ontario to PEI and back and my fuel (calculated by my dad who is old school) was 41 MPG there and back! I didn’t expect it to be as good coming back home given going against the wind most of the way. However I also chose to immediately start using premium fuel, so maybe that’s helping. Honestly it’s not that much extra $ compared to the lower grade and usually after filling up, it tells me that I have 830 kms to empty. Love my car!!

Quiet, smooth, big enough for a family and the best peace of mind vehicle ever. Easy to do simple maintenance yourself and plan to keep this thing up to 300K. Every time I test drive something else I ask , why bother, the biggest test came when I drove the 2024 CX-90 but then I remembered I got the Platinum, under sticker and an insane rate, plus it has a sport mode with a torque-vectoring rear differential. Can someone explain why the amount of torque steer cars produce is so variable? It can't be just the amount of torque the drivetrain sends to the wheels: my EV generates far more torque than any other car I've driven but generates no noticeable torque steer at all.
    I've always associated torque steer with relatively light FWD cars; I wouldn't expect a vehicle this big with AWD to have much if any torque steer. So my understanding of what causes it must be lacking in some way.

    I did a coast to coast (US) drive in a rental highlander in November. The Highlander has impressive bones and the base 2.4L turbo engine was beyond any expectations I could have had for power, MPG and low noise. The cargo area swallowed 2 hope chests and still had room for some luggage and it drove very well once I turned off the idiotic 'feature' that pulsed the brakes around even the most minor of curves if the cruise was enabled. All that said, the LE grade's lack of feature content is serious. The textured black plastic door pulls look and feel like a cheap aftermarket replacement for something that fell off. The audio quality from the (allegedly) 6 speaker base sound system was horrendous, barely adequate for talk radio. I don't mean this base system wasn't a rocking fun sound system, I mean truly awful, like something from a 1990's economy car. Despite the relatively quiet interior, at highway speeds the sound system just couldn't reasonably be enjoyed. The rear hatch often took two tries to close and moved very slowly, a minor annoyance. I would have made different choices for the base trim. I'd leave triple zone climate control for an upgrade and maybe put heated seats and at least a slightly better audio system in the base level.
    One other issue was that with the hope chests (each under 100 pounds) in the back and the 2 front seats occupied, the car squatted enough that I had NUMEROUS people flashing their brights at me and mine absolutely positively were not on. I actually chose to cut a few days short rather than feeling like a jerk possibly blinding people on the 2 lane roads I did most of my trip on. Despite being SO impressed with the drivetrain and composure of the vehicle, if I was looking at a 5 or 6 year commitment to a car note, I'd be looking at better equipped 'lesser' vehicles if I couldn't swing the higher payments for an XSE or Limited.

    • @ryannatividad3137
      @ryannatividad3137 Před 4 měsíci +1

      My biggest complaint with the LE trims on both the RAV4 and the Highlanders was less the lack of features (I expect them to decontent for the price), but how much they seem to cheapen the interior materials compared to the XLE and higher trims. I don't necessarily find that same level of noticeable discrepancy in the Camry LE vs. SE/XLE or higher. Even my partner's 2015 Toyota Yaris LE looks decently nice, and far less noticeably cheap inside than last two gens of RAV4 and Highlander LEs I've been in. The biggest design problem with them is that they replace almost all of the soft touch or contrasting color accents with the cheap, often black, plastic you mentioned. The drab lack of contrast or visual interest is what I think is the main culprit in making it look offensively cheap and like a prototype/unfinished test vehicle.

    • @MikeKayK
      @MikeKayK Před 4 měsíci

      Lowest trim is often done this way on purpose, including in other brands. You can't really complain about that. It's for rental companies, poorer countries, and people who won't care. Just go up one trim level.

    I think the next highlander will probably be a sports SUV as Toyota now has the Grand Highlander as the people mover
    This model does now look old now with lots of new Toyota models that have come out. Love Yuri pink shirt

    Toyota does the same sh#t in Australia.
    You put your deposit down, wait two years for delivery, then they jack the price up. You can always walk, but in the meantime, your current car has an extra two years of depreciation on it, and you still have no new car.

      Not sure about Highlander, but our Camry Hybrid can go until 15-20km/h before it switches from electric to gas. It also switches immediately if you punch the gas pedal.
