    I honestly really enjoy collecting games digitally on steam these days. Back when I was younger I would go out to game stores and buy physical copies and trade and things like that...once I switched over to PC gaming in 2017 I kinda stopped caring about physical gaming media entirely and didn't realize it...very interesting discussion

      My neighbor collects big box pc games..thats where pc collecting stops tbh and he agrees. There's no value in digital even on my old facebook group people were struggling to sell steam accounts for number of reasons.console collecting is a different thing with collectors editions and limited run ect ...

      @GamerAhmer  Před rokem

      Yes I see less and less pc boxes and physical media at stores. It’s really geared towards console gamers. Something about those big box games from back in the day though. The amazing detail! It’s so much different today!

      I’m willing to bet every single person who’s like “physical games or bust” has never lived in a major city. When I was living in a shared apartment in San Francisco, living right near the beach, the last thing I was worrying about was not having my N64 carts.

  • @leeartlee915
    @leeartlee915 Před rokem

    Couple of things changed my mind. First, I experienced a flood that ruined a LOT of my stuff, including my games. Second, I moved out of my childhood town and traveled the world. When you move around, you get less attached to stuff. Lastly, I realized that the less time I spend swapping discs/carts, the more time I can spend playing games.

    Physical for me I don't want my favorite games movies TV shows and music being controlled by someone else. I want to be able to play them watch them listen to music whenever I want knowing it's always there for me when I need it. I love going out to buy video games it's much more fun than ordering online

    I do usually prefer physical copies. But sometimes, there is a digital deal I can't pass up. Like a game being uncommon and thus when it does show up at the local store or ebay, it tends to be more expensive than I would like. Yet, the same game on PSN was $7.49 the other day.
    Not to mention the games already take up hard drive space whether the physical copy is owned or not. PS Plus or Game Pass also really changed my opinion on it. I could easily switch between games without having to go to the shelf lol.
    I think my big fear is Disc Rot. What if one day I was able to get a rare game, only for it within a few years to not work. Until that becomes more widespread I will still get physical games.

    I have a strong preference for physical copies...with a little finagling I can always make a digital backup just in case the hard copy should some day fail. Ever since I was a kid I loved keeping my physical games in perfect condition with the boxes / manuals / etc, and looking at them on my shelf always gave a little burst of joy and happiness. I still prefer buying physical copies for modern current gen systems but it's not quite the same as it used to be. You may have part of the game as a one use download code, large parts of the game as an update and not on the disc, and games that become coasters after the online server is shut down.

    Physical collecting has many great facets from feeling more like you own it to having it as backup should servers shut down or it's pulled from eshops. There's also a lot to be said about the presentation with the art even if it's just the label, or full case and manual.
    Digital has many benefits too though, less to lug around of course but also, we loved it for our kiddo so she wouldn't lose her DS carts.
    Sadly, the future IS digital but just like vinyl, there's sure to always be some sort of niche, physical gaming market for ages to come.

      Yes! So many deals out there. I just see more of a worth when it comes to a physical game and feel like I get more for my money. You would think digital would be less expensive at first because there isn’t paper/ a case/ or anything extra adding to a price.

  • @pheria
    @pheria Před měsícem

    Both stress me out. lol
    Too much physical stuff feels like a liability if something were to happen to the physical space itself. With digital I don't have to worry about finding a space to store it, but digital content management can still be a pain in the butt. It's gotten better, but PS3/Vita download lists were the worst. Physical introduces new failure points, if your disc drive or cartridge slot fails (or the cartridge/disc itself. It's rare - I've only encountered it with one cartridge: Puzzle and Dragons 3DS had a bunch of faulty cartridges. I think Omega Ruby is another one that some are faulty?).
    I mostly love physical because it preserves the option to *buy* something in the future. If nothing was ever delisted and stores were never shut down, digital would be magical. But it isn't.
    Pretty boxes are cool sometimes. Servers providing updates and redownloads usually stay up longer than stores, so your discs should still be able to update for a while but eventually we'll reach a point where a physical copy is incomplete, and we don't have the official means to complete it. So they're both a mess, in their own ways. Haha. Ideally, every game would be available in both formats, always and everyone could choose.

    For me, the digital vs physical is on a case by case basis. I prefer physical since I do like some sports games, NHL is a perfect example. I play yearly, and that is something I prefer physical because at least I resell mine to get some value back before I get the next years iteration.
    I usually buy digital when it comes to switch games. I have a 6 year old son, and he likes to play some of my Mario games. I buy those digital so that eliminates the possibility of him losing the games if he takes the switch somewhere, and having to buy another physical copy.
    Another argument for physical as well, is I will buy physical if the price is reasonable at a place like Target vs. online. Like I said, I see pros and cons in both, and I just collect on a case by case basis. I just don’t understand why some physical titles are much cheaper than buying digital. Less distribution costs since a sever farm handles that traffic on downloads. I guess that’s just game companies being greedy I guess, but that’s a whole other topic.

    Few flaws for digital collecting is any game developer has the right to remove that game from all digital storefronts ( an example being Unreal franchise ), also if you want to purchase any current game released now onward on Steam, you have to deal with Denuvo.
    Few flaws for physical media is disc rot, along where the games are stored at.
    All in all, its a matter of enjoying the games and knowing what you can go back to time to time.

    Im not spending $200-$500 for a PHYSICAL Limited Run or Special Reserve game. Also if you are a collector or reseller of Limited Run or Special Reserve games, you may have to buy a PATCH cart thats has been released.
    Another scenario, if the servers goes down, if no PATCH cart was released & you HAVE to download the patch at THAT given time BUT, if you dont download the patch & you sit on that BRAND NEW, SEALED COLLECTORS EDITION, no one wants to buy a defective, expensive collectors edition that cannot be download/UPDATED because the server is down for good.

    I prefer physical but I do buy digital for steam, switch and ps3 (some games I only have access to digitally so makes sense for me). But I don't buy many collector's editions and sadly the standard physical doesn't come with a manual anymore. So it's a bit more bare-bones. However I do think apps like steam are really cool with earning points, getting badges, themes, backgrounds, discussions etc and I think collecting on a platform that can give you a good user interface to store your game and all these other options isn't such a bad future. I think it's in some ways better than physical. The only snag is just not FEELING like you own the game like you do a physical. Like I can imagine the effort and pride you have figuring out how to display all of your vast collection and that's a feeling that's hard to replicate in an app I think. Just some random thoughts cos I don't which way I swing.

      Why would you link digital gaming to laziness, walking to a game store or ordering physical online is not exactly a workout even for a gamer? It's also as easy to argue that a "hard-core" gamer would prefer digital as they are more likely to have issues with storing and accessing hundreds of physical games, some gamers even have families and can't all dedicate a room to storing plastic boxes.
