    From experience in my younger years.....you will need a bucket or small pail with warm soapy water and old rags to wash her teets, and a pail of plain warm water to wipe teets after washing. We always kept the clean rags down by the milk station in a 5 gal bucket with tight fitting lid. after use dirty rag went back to house with soa bucket for cleaning along with the warm water pail. Also gonna need bucket or wheel barrow and shovel to scoop poop and let her pee in to keep platform clean. We also had water hose with spray nozzle to clean off deck.

    • @peggysue6857
      @peggysue6857 Před 4 lety +8

      I forgot most important part, stainless steel milk pail with lid. We also had a board on a hinge on one side to press the cow in so she couldnt move, it had a chain across her but and hooked on one side to hold her in place. Helps with her not kicking also. But if you hold your arm against her leg while milking helps her to not kick as well.
      Happy Birthday Isaiah :}

    Do you have your calving box ready, chains incase the calf needs assist, supplements or the calf? You should wash her backend and tail up to prevent infection. Most cows do fine with no assist but it's her first and she is thin, was she dewormed before you brought her to clean pasture. If not ask your vet to check her for parasites it might be why she is thin. A tail clip is handy as well while milking , nothing like cow tail popping you in the eye! 😂🧡 keep a vet number handy, just in case. GOOD LUCK!

I would add one that hits right at the top of her thighs, and add a hock catch of some sort to keep her from kicking. @@whitehouseonthehill Just talk to her by name. Hey Dolly, hey Dolly, git up Dolly, good Dolly. etc. she will learn her name and cows are smarter than given credit for. When milking put your head against her leg, roughly where her leg starts to join up with her hip. When she starts to move to kick you will feel it first and you can push with your head to tip her off balance. When milking, cleaning her udder etc. always move deliberately with confidence and firmness. Gentle caresses might be nice with the Mrs. but they just tickle a cow's udder making them twinge. Watch a calf feed, there isn't any gentleness or fiddling about involved. You want to emulate that. Watching you gently stroke her udder as your were, made me want to kick you. LOL
      I used to milk 150 head twice a day. All our cows were very gentle but wouldn't take kindly to mucking about. They all responded to their names and knew our different voices as we went about daily milking. I suggest getting some udder dip and a teat cup to treat her teats after milking, this will help prevent mastitis.

    Speaking from experience with our two jersey girls, Stanchion training is so important. A calf throws a kink into the picture. Our girls have been trained for a very long time and will run into the stanchion, but when they have a calf, it’s very challenging to get her to leave the calf.. we have made it hard on ourselves in the past and didn’t halter train the calves... I know Justin does and we will start that on the very next calf. After a few weeks, they will leave their baby, but we will do the calf training as soon as they come out next time! Good luck and blessings!!! It doesn’t come without its challenges, but we really do enjoy our girls and the benefits of raw milk!

      Yes. The poop and the pee is a problem. Justin Rhodes keeps a wheel barrow full of hay nearby and a shovel to scoop the hot and wet poop into the hay. And he has a hose mounted with a control spray nozzle to clear it away. Then the area is covered with sawdust. He has two milk cows, and one of them will sometimes poop twice during her milking. This is why I would do goats.

Soon you’ll be having fresh milk from Dolly and that means fresh cream and butter and cheese.

    Happy first birthday Isaiah! 🥳 🎉
    It’s my birthday as well! But it was yesterday, Saturday 18th of April! A very low-key one this year, for obvious reasons! Well, it was actually a non-event for me this year, because I’m alone and of course social isolating, just like everyone else in Australia!
    I can’t wait for Dolly to have her calf!! Calves are adorable! I remember when I was a kid on my grandfather’s dairy farm and he would always name one of each of the calves after all of us, his grandchildren! Because he kept them all.
    We would hand feed them straw and hay, but because I have always had long blonde hair, they thought my hair was the straw, so the calves would always try to eat my hair!
    I was the only female cousin/grandchild with blonde hair, all the other girls had long brown hair, so they only ever tried to eat mine!
    I swear, your videos so often bring back such happy memories of my childhood for me! Thank you for that.
    It actually means a lot now that I am living in Australia for almost 11 years and my family and home is in N.Ireland. I would still watch and love your videos, even if that wasn’t the case, but because of my childhood and my life now, your channel and videos are all the more special to me. I just wanted you to know that.
    I love all of you guys. You are a beautiful family and it brings me a lot of joy knowing just how amazing all of your kid’s childhoods are and will be because of the lifestyle that you guys have chosen and are living. All of the animals and the land, everything is an adventure waiting to be found. 💜

    I look up to you guys. I used to farm with my mom and she lost everything. I moved states and now I have ducks and chickens and constantly working on something new. I started incubating duck eggs (I need more females and you guys influenced me) and they are due any day. So far 10/11 are alive and well. I want to one day start a CZcams channel but I am still too shy. I love you guys.

    I can't believe it's already been 1 year. Time flies.
    I hope you're getting horses! An American Paint would be cool or Mustang or a pony for the kids (Icelandic/Sheti/Fallabella).
    I could help with horse genetics if you ever breed em and got em tested.

    Oh I thought from the title something bad had happened. Like " that's the last thing we needed " . Glad it was just the finishing touches. I still jump when the wee fellow puts his face near her ( Dolly's ) horns. There's reasons why dairy cattle get dehorned, although Jerseys are less often done. Her horns don't turn in at the points as much as a lot of Jerseys do , hence why I am nervous.

    I sure hope she’s been drying up for at least 6 weeks before she drops her calf ... as skinny as she is I’d guess not from her previous owners ... she is looking better already ! Like as mentioned I’d put down some anti slip things I have just some old rubber garden hose split and screwed to my milking deck !

    Thanks for sharing your life with us! I plan on moving my family out to rural Missouri from the Denver rat race this summer. I am struggling to find the right balance between living in a rural location and still having access to the larger cities in order to work in the technology field.

    I would put some flat stones or even cement under the deck ( above the ground ) so that it wouldn't rot over time. Because it is long-term, not for 1-2 years.
