In 2003, the town of Erie, Pennsylvania made national news when an unassuming pizza delivery man walked into a local bank and demanded a quarter of a million dollars from the vault. What happened next would baffle authorities for years and see the crime become one of the most intriguing ever committed in the United States. So what happened?

What a horrible way to go. I don't think the poor man had anything to do with it simply scared enough to follow orders. This has movie written all over it. I love your channels keep up the great work. Your voice is what helps to capture you're audience attention.
If you’re already a crossout player you can still click the link for the bonus.
Why not just name your videos "Crossout ad" or "World of tanks ad" etc.
I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to unsubscribe. It drives me crazy the sheer amount of each video that is taken up with ads for shitty games.
Simon could pull off the perfect crime. 1 simon could rob the bank then go into the McDonalds next door and mingle with 50 or 60 of the Simon clones that normally present the hundreds or youtube channels he is associated with. The police would have no idea which Simon committed the crime as they are all identical copies. The perfect crime!!
I think it's more fun to watch you play, Simon! ❤️😎
Note: "This has nothing to do with the Wells case."

Interesting
@@jarnold1789 Interesting? You mean terrible, or unfortunate or awful, right? What a world we live in where a man with a bomb strapped to his neck about to die delivering pizzas is not entertaining enough to some smug viewers.
That fact WAS brought up in the video.
I'm just imagining jigsaw on the phone saying "yeah can I get uuuuh pepperoni pizza please" but in the low voice
I actually remember this on the news. And everybody thought it was the worlds worst attempt at a bank robbery... But then his bomb actually went off and killed him, then shit got serious!
I'm from Pittsburgh, Given the location (And the fact that PNC is a Pittsburgh based bank) this was a big story locally. I have had a PNC account since the 70's (Then known as Pittsburgh National Bank) Naturally MY bank WOULD be involved is the weirdest bank robbery in US history. LOL.
@@jamesslick4790 Wow! Why didn’t they interview you for the documentary?
@@RabidChild82 I wasn't there and had no direct connection, aside from having an account there. LOL
@@jamesslick4790 You sound qualified enough hahaha
@@jamesslick4790 I live in Erie. I was pretty young when this happened, but my Mom remembers it. We were just down the street when the bomb went off, and I've actually met the lead FBI agent who worked on this case.
Watched a video on youtube a couple years back about this..
The clips of the guy asking for help, and the police being unsure is heartbreaking.
I tear up thinking about that every time. I was just so shocked that it happened like that.
@@denishavail1773the people who did it where fucked up sadistic
@@denishavail1773 a little hard to feel bad for a guy who willing strapped on a bomb vest and went into a bank no? Fake bomb or not this guy fucked around and found out
Geez, this tale of thievery, conspiracy, and murder has more finger pointing and plot twists than the Wonderland murders!!
I live in Erie and grew up when this happened ... ! It's still shocking to realize it happened here and all the behind the scenes details that still are coming out. Keep the awesome videos coming!
i lived in erie too. it’s crazy to think i pass the place where it happened every week
Man what a weird place huh
I actually worked with Wells at a different pizza shop in Erie in 2000 for only a few days, he was let go because he refused to take a delivery unless he could take his break before the liquor store closed. Then 3 years later this happened. Makes you wonder about the butterfly effect and degrees of separation when you are from a small town.
How did you feel seeing something like this happening to a coworker? Must be a strange feeling for sure
I remember seeing this in the news, and never found out the rest of the story until now.
There's a good documentary on Netflix about this. (I know it's been two years but just in case!)
I watched this go down on live TV. And no, there was no warning, so the cameras caught and broadcasted everything.
I remember this also very bizarre things to see when you're not expecting it
I saw THIS and the Bud Dwyer suicide live in '87. Pennsylvania TV news, Sometimes more than weather "scares" and pothole reports!
@@jamesslick4790 Jesus the bud Dwyer thing gave me nightmares.
@@cthulhuhasrisen1009 I can see how it would. I was 25 and I still can feel the shock. I saw it on Channel 11 in Pittsburgh. I don't "blame" the station, It was live, it happened, and it WAS news. I'm from the North Side of Pittsburgh, Channel 11 is STILL my main local news source. Good local station.
I'm sure glad I didn't see that, but it was still all over the Erie news in the following weeks, which was probably not great for my seven year old mind. It was kind of a crazy place to grow up. Oh well, I got out and live in Pittsburgh now.
This is one crazy case. I remember stalking this case for years waiting to hear what the hell happened!
Same. I don't think anyone could have been prepared for what the outcome was. I'm still baffled by it today.
Me too but I guess I gave up on it too soon.
Me too. The whole thing was just so weird. but I knew our ridiculous "4th estate" would be on the case if there were any changes. Lucky us.
Ironically there was a Domino's ad at the beginning of the video.
Holy crap.. I looked closer at that map of Erie. My grandparents lived less than one mile from the TV tower where Wells was given the bomb, at the time he was given the bomb in 2003... Weeeird!
One might even go so far as to say eerie...

Yes! This case is so fascinating and sad.
Note: "This has nothing to do with the Wells case."
Me: Laughing way to loud, way to long, having to go back to earlier in the video.
This plot could have almost been a Side Projects, or based on the time involved, a Mega Project! Way to go Simon.
It's weird having something like this happen on the main drag of your home town when you're a kid. It gets talked about throughout your childhood and they play the police video constantly on the local news to the point where you forget you're watching footage of a man about to get his head blown off. All you see is the building in the background where you had your 10th birthday
I'm a true-crime buff and this has to be the craziest story of true crime I've ever heard of. I've read tons of true crime books and this story is unmatched. She was absolutely crazy but she was extremely smart which is scary to think are there any more victims out there.
Look up the west virginia farm gas chamber if you like true crime, one of the first serial killers in u.s history was a guy who would lure widows to his farm to marry, kill them on his murder farm and collect their items, stating they never showed up. Turns out he made a gas chamber in the farm to make it easier.
@@HovektheArtist wow, that's crazy. Thanks!
@@denishavail1773 his name was harry f powers, he was also called the lonely hearts killer, i found out about him when i lived near the farm a few years ago, people in the area say the land is haunted, people supposedly still do rituals and crap there, and when i lived in the area there was another lurder on the property, so it even has a legacy

That poor guy! What a sad story. I'm glad they were caught in the end
Indeed. Brian seemed like a low-profile guy just trying to get by, delivering pizzas at his age and frequenting working-girls because he didn't have much else going for him. That they took advantage of him because he was a "pushover" just makes the whole thing all the more despicable. And for what? So she could pay a guy to murder her father. 😒
@@user-vn7ce5ig1z Her father had also written her out of his will years prior. If everything had gone to plan, she never would have got the inheritance.
There are so many aspects of this case not even thought of here. You did a good overview, but the whole story is so bizarre and nuanced that to really get an understanding of it you really need to watch the Netflix documentary on it. Absolutely fascinating from beginning to end. And graphic. They didn’t omit the more grizzly details. Still, good overview, with enough information to get someone interested enough to seek out more information.
Yeah, that was a great documentary!
Netflix has a documentary on this event
Jonathan Weiss evil genius
Ya but the Netflix documentary made the bomb sound high tech
@Irene Zimmerman wasnt bad at all, try best gore
Its called 30 minutes or less :')
I’m sure Simon is waiting for the lawsuit!!!
I remember this when it first came to light. But I never knew the conclusion. Thanks.
I also remember there being a panic over potential copycat crimes or a repeat of the situation.
Netflix.. evil genius.. that's a good documentary on it
There was a copycat crime, in Australia. The bomb wasnt real, but the girl who had it strapped on her didnt know that
I remember the original pizza bomber story when it hit the news, but I never learned of the aftermath until now. Thanks for giving us the rest of the story.
Evil genius on Netflix. There's the whole story in detail

Always wondered what happened with this situation. I was working in a newspaper office when this story broke. I still remember the debates, hot headed opinions and wild speculation surrounding the headlines that were swirling around the office at the time. Oddly the prevailing theories seemed to be that he acted alone and the whole thing was a ruse, though nobody who espoused this story could explain why the device was real.
Wasn't this the basis for the movie "30 Minutes or Less?"
In it's entirety
_2 - Grilled Ham 'n Cheese sammiches and a new Simon vid!! Life is good!!._
I admit I was only casually listening (I am so busy but your voice is so soothing that even when I don't have time I watch your videos anyway) and I randomly clicked over and saw Lake Erie and remembered you'd said cell phone and boy if I didn't go back immediately and start over. Its one thing when these things happened a lifetime ago in a land far away (or at least in a place you've never been to before), but when they happened in your lifetime near where you grew up (I was 11 then? something like that), the stories take on a little bit of a different feeling.
Being a Western New York native and remembering this case, it is always interesting to see how a channel deals with this. I applaud how you did, and find it interesting you left out that the bomb went off while this was on live TV.
I remember seeing this on TV in the late 2000's early 2010's. I've been trying to remember it lately and lo and behold this video comes out.
I love the way you sound when you and Karl and Daven work together. I think that voice is something special and I'm completely fine with you all financing it however you need to, as long as it isn't Paid: Shallow Lesions. XD
Excellent content as per usual, and thank you for including the clip at the end of the add where the game pressures you into paying to keep playing, I imagine for the sponsorship deal you couldn't slap big warning labels on it saying "Beware of microtransactions".
Fascinating, I had never heard even a hint of this story, thanks!
Thanks for this video! I clearly remember when this happened and wondered how long it would take until we got the full story. It's crazy it was a crappy DIY bomb he could have just pulled off himself.
I travel all over the country for work. I was actually driving through Erie, PA when this video popped up. Crazy timing
I remember when this event occurred. I always wondered what the explanation was. Thank you for the information.
There's a plot for a convoluted yet intriguing movie.
They already made one, it's call 30 minutes or less
Man, I'm lucky I read the title because the thumbnail did NOT tell me this was about the pizza bomber case. Glad I clicked.
Love from Erie, Pennsylvania!
That all happened right down the road from me! No freaking joke!!
I use to live around Waterford PA when this happened!!! I was born and raised right around Lake Erie.
Our peach street is full of stores and malls (like Millcreek mall- the biggest one) for miles.
I remember when that crap happened. It was insane!
Where the horrible house use to stand its just an over grown patch of land now. I drive by it a lot still.
I never thought something like this would happen in Erie PA! 😳😳😳
Thanks Simon for this great channel, over the last few months I've been entertained and educated by some fascinating topics.
I love when everything gets tied together
This is an hour north of my hometown. I remember when this happened.
Being from the UK I had no idea about this... but it's crazy and interesting all at the same time!
My home town! I remember when this happened. Poor bastard.

I actually already love crossout. It's fun as hell
That was the most suitably bizarre tale, thanks for that.
I actually wondered about this weird event years ago and now I have some sort of closure.
Doesn't "simply turning off the timers while still around his neck" the main way the bomb works?
I think the going off ringing is connected to detonation. That they wire that to the bomb instead of the soundthingy
But i wouldn't know. I don't make bombs.
Great vid! I’d heard the story in true crime podcasts but never seen the visuals. Also Simon that beard is 👀👀 10/10 thank you
Man the Netflix movie on this was awesome
This story reminded me a little of the Black Mirror episode Shut Up and Dance. I wonder if there's been a similar case in real life.
This may be the best crime story, ever. Wow. I love it!
This video hits me close to home as Erie is my hometown, so I watched this story unfold in my community.... First a comedy movie was made (30 minutes or less), then a Netflix documentary, and now we get the Today I Found Out bump! I feel ashamed and impressed.... its confusing.😓
Simon,I would totally watch you stream games!
Heard about this one recently on the Casefile podcast which goes into depth about the story.
How about the origin of the word "Bull's eye" and how did "jackpot" get that name?
Bulls eye comes from bullfighting when there is a death shot through the bull's eye. Jack pot comes from Uncle Jack; he has the best pot.
@@bobby_greene thanks for that worthless tidbit of historically devoid information...
The story of my hometown. Erie doesn't typically hit national news, unless it's for something bad.
It's odd seeing a "Today I Found Out" episode talking about the city I live in. Seeing the Netflix documentary, Evil Genius, was also quite a surprise.
My personal theory was that Brian knew them all but wasn't part of the plan until the pizza call, he thought it was not real (that's why he was so cavalier in the bank) so he went along with the plot they gave him.
What a convoluted story!
There was only one electronic timer and two analog kitchen timers with when at zero would complete the circuit. The electronic timers was a warning/ alarm to alert that the bomb was about to go off. But most of the device was about misdirection which it did until the police reconstructed it.
I’m from Erie, Pa. Remember this very well. I lived not far down the road from where it happened.
The Cohen brothers need to make this into a movie!
But it needs to be better. : Wells (Bruce Willis) a man down on his luck, divorced and out of jail, tries to make a living while delivering Pizza, until one day fate punches him in the face hard. The criminal genius Deal Armstrong (Sigourney Weaver) and her explosives specialist Rothstein (Nicholas Cage) put a bomb around his neck and force him to rob a bank. To save his head Wells has to go on a scavanger hunt through six states and solve deadly riddles while being hunted by detective Bill Fizzler (Jason Statham) who is determined to stop him.
There's actually a movie like this but I don't remember the name of it.
FINALLY some closure on that strange event.
One thing I found out from a coworker of mine is that she grew up in that area and told me about how she would pass that area...
It be pretty cool if tifo made more videos like this
I was sure this was going to be a weird, but unsolved mystery. I'm glad that they were able to get to the bottom of it.
I see what you did there and I like it.
I grew up with the Lethal Weapon trilogy
This is my home town. I still remember when this happened. I lived less than a mile from where everything went down.
8:40 Oh, well that happens. I did that too once I was at the policestation to renew my passport. While waiting for the clerk to process the documents it just sort of slipped from me about my tax fraud schemes and illicit bookmaking. I think it's the atmosphere around that whole police thing, makes you say weird stuff for no reason.
Yes I did find this episode interesting and suitably bizarre thank you.

THAT... Would make the seed of a fantastic playset for the Fiasco RPG... 🤯
That's one interesting video. Thanks!

Please consider looking into the SL-1 nuclear reactor explosion in Idaho Falls back in the 60’s. Three guys were killed (one so radioactive his family received nothing but one hand in a lead coffin, the rest of his body disposed of as nuclear waste), but that’s not the interesting part. Two of the men had an ongoing disagreement over the attention one was paying to the other’s wife...which led to him possibly sabotaging the reactor to make his rival look bad. Or it was suicide. Or it was murder/suicide, since none of them were able to tell their side of the situation. Interesting and may explain why we don’t just let 2 or 3 people look after a reactor anymore.
A. nuclear reactor as a murder weapon....
Saw a documentary on this a few years ago. She was apparently the "mastermind."
