Not into lanterns but I like the jar idea!
Also try putting the lantern into a jar like that, I imagine it would make some cool light effects!

Instead of magnets, you might think about using those 3m velcro strips that are very strong but also removable in case you change your mind later on.

I have two of these. They are great! How did your exams go? What about a metal canister about the size of the jar so you don't have the potential of the glass breaking?
