  • I built a floating cabinet for a media wall. It was made with poplar wood and looks great. It is a vast improvement over the TV stand they were using. The design is mid century modern. I added floating shelves in the second step. The link to that video is here:

I always have trouble lining up the drawer glides. Will use your procedure on an upcoming project. Thanks!

Thanks! It works well. There are jigs that you can buy, but I don’t do drawers often enough to spend the money.

This was helpful, thinking about doing something similar

Thanks. I just finished another one under a larger tv in my basement. It’s wider but not quite as high. It’s so wide, I made it in three sections. Instead of using the back cleat, I screwed the units directly to the wall like you would a kitchen cabinet. That made it easier to get the top level. Good luck with yours!

Great video. Would I be able to float this if the depth was closer to 12 or 16 inches?

Thanks for the question. I’m making one now that will be 12” deep. I also have much heavier cabinets I made for my shop that are 12” deep and the the face frame and doors add to that. I don’t feel confident in telling you that 16” is ok. I’m helping a master carpenter who has a broken hand work on some cabinets. I’ll ask him today, what he thinks about 16”. I’ll get back to you.

Andey, I talked to my carpenter friend. He thought 16” should be ok. Be sure you get your screws into the studs. For extra support, you might want to run a 1x4 strip along the inside bottom of the cabinet inset like the French cleat with pocket screws and screw that into the studs as well. Having said that, we are not structural engineers and neither one of us have hung a cabinet that deep so the decision to do so is entirely yours. How’s that for a disclaimer! Good luck and let me know how it goes. I am currently making three similar cabinets to hang below my TV in the basement. They will be 39”x17” at 12 7/8” deep . That doesn’t include the face frame and doors. I’m very comfortable with those dimensions. I’ll use 3 1/2” screws to anchor them to the studs.

I’m flattered that you would ask but I do not take orders.
