    I enjoyed your comments. One thing that struck me about the Brueghel painting is the contrast of classes. You have the poor hunters who only came home with a skinny fox, the inn workers building a fire in the freezing wind and even the person carrying sticks contrasted to those who have priviledge to skate and frolic the day away. The hunters may have to give up their poor game to some lord, the inn workers may be making a meal or chamber for a rich traveler and the sticks may be meant for the hearth of some great manor house. Brueghel may have been making a sub rosa statement about class differences of his time.

      Thanks a lot! I have never thought that the ones skating down there and enjoying the day are actually from another class. I think they are villagers too. I don’t think upper classes would blend in with the villagers much. We should remember that Brueghel is painting these for upper classes to learn about villagers. I tend to think that Brueghel is targeting to show different sides of life here: hard work and pleasure.
