I think this Mario Party game aged well and I really can't wait to see Mario Party 3 come out because it was my first Mario Party game I've ever played in my childhood.
Yes the specific cpu characters are more likely to buy certain items. What I find most hilarious is when luigi (I guess on lower difficulty) buys key,opens the gate and then NOT go through the gate lol.

Each character has their own item that they always go for when the CPU uses them yes. Here are the items that each character will go for when the AI is using them:
Mario - Mushrooms (I believe this also includes Golden Mushrooms too, but I'm not sure)
Luigi - Skeleton Key
Peach - Plunder Chest
Yoshi - Warp Block
Wario - Dueling Glove
Donkey Kong - Bowser Bomb
Yeah, I have no idea why DK's item is the Bowser Bomb. Feels weird to me. They changed it to Reverse Mushrooms in Mario Party 3, which is a lot better in my opinion

Nintendo has already confirmed Mario Party 3 will be coming to Switch Online at some point, so you could play the switch version when it comes out, but I’d be fine with the original version as well!

1:09:45 Technically battle minigames causes you to lose coins. Takes away coins from everyone and the losers get none so you do lose coins.
