I'm making the most ridiculous historical fashion ever -- an English Regency Court Gown

  • Let's be honest, it was bound to happen eventually. I have been fascinated with English Regency court gowns for a while, and when Costume College announced that this year's gala theme was Bridgerton, I knew I had to show up in the one truly ridiculous fashion moment that Bridgerton woefully ignored -- English Regency court gowns.

      I'd so love too but can't afford to 😢 thought I was mentally scanning my own stash if I had anything! Most of my stuff is quilting. But this does make me wonder if someone could sponsor this costume? Patreon does do this in a way? Or another costumer ? Is there trading within the community like there is in the quilting one?

    Don't apologize for doing math! I was never a whiz at it, but I think it's important to show how algebra, geometry, etc. are used in real life. It makes it easier to understand or at least appreciate when applied in a practical manner, rather than the theoretical way we usually learn in school 😊 This dress will be lovely!

    I can just see the Queen grinding her teeth at how people took her rule and totally made it ridiculous. At that point, she must have decided to just sit back and see far they could take it as she refused to react. If they are going malicious compliance, lets see how hard they will go! lol

Clearly your cat is of the "my job is to sit on whatever you want to look at" - I had a cat like that. Sit down with a book, cat magically appears on top of book. Put book down to pet cat - get glared at - cat wanders away - pick up book - BOOM Cat magically appears again. Such memories! Kiss that furry little head for me, please.

What would be really cool and very historical is if you did a video about remaking this court gown into something more practical after the costume, college gala. String sequins are easy to sew on. Use a fairly sturdy needle, make sure you are sewing them in the direction where the sequins overlap away from the machine foot, so if you run your finger towards you they are smooth. The other way you'll go mad! Set the stitch length fairly long, and just go for it.

    On the subject of the gold lace trimmings ,,, to my eye, (and through multiple technologies/screens between the recording and the viewing), the antique gold looks to be a better match to the colour scheme of the skirt fabric as opposed to the slightly brassier yellow gold tone of the wider stash lace, and could possibly be a more subtle contrast to the shot taffeta and the metallic striped fabric of the sleeves and bodice... but hey, that's just me...🥴

  • @toadlessgirl
    @toadlessgirl Před 3 měsíci +1

    Hey! Hoping I can shed a bit more light on the history side of this for you. The fashion plates you showed are from (in order)… 1805 (purple), 1797 (yellow), 1807 (red), 1800 (blue), 1799 (green), 1795 (striped with huge pannier), 1810 (white drapery), 1808 (diagonal gold fringe), 1799? (I’ll have to double check this one, dark purple bodice), 1817 (pink frou frou), 1796 (dark train and moons) and 1799 (yellow with leaves). If you put them in chronological order you can probably work out, as you theorized, that the different styles you mentioned are from different time periods. Court fashion, like all fashion, was still heavily trend-driven despite how niche it was.
    Some vocab for the basic components of a court gown: the petticoat (large exposed skirt), the draperies (self explanatory, and more common later on in the period), the body (bodice) and the train (which was always present even if it’s not visible in fashion plates). The body and train were sometimes collectively called “the mantle” as they were often in one piece, sometimes with the draperies attached as well.
    Don’t worry at all about going over the top with your trim/embellishments as they could get truly ridiculous, especially in the 1780s and 90s. Stars, moons, sequins, gemstones, flowers, lace, ribbons, bows, wreaths, feathers, leaves, wheat ears, beads, fringe, rope, tassels, chains, colored foil, rhinestone pineapples… you name it, it probably popped up at least once or twice. Queen Charlotte owned a set of diamond stars and a diamond crescent moon that she used to embellish her court dress on numerous occasions. She often wore the crescent moon on her head-dress or turban.
    I have a much higher definition copy of the 1795 plate you’re referencing, as well as the moon dress if you’d like copies. The blurry inscription on the 1795 plate reads “Published as the Act directs Feb 1, 1795, by N. Heideldorff, at the Gallery of Fashion Office, No. 90 Wardour Street”. The fact it was published in February means it would have been worn for the Queen’s birthday in January, as that was the only major winter Court function.

      They definitely wouldn't go together. The red goes with it really nicely though.

    Return trim? I get it. It's logical. But how?

      It's why I prefer to order unknown sewing entities from Amazon -- everything has free returns. The trade-off is that it comes in 5/10/20 yard lengths, so you can't just get like 1 yard of something if you need it.

      @@LadyRebeccaFashions LOL, I was just ribbing...aka, you should see my stash. How does one actually return fabric and trim, how how how? It's like proving Bigfoot exists!
