    ----------------
"What I think is most problematic is that we [in the medical field] were a bit dishonest in saying we had more confidence than we really did," says Vinay Prasad, a practicing hematologist-oncologist and associate professor in the department of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco. "The place that I have been most critical of the pandemic response is communication around the certainty of the evidence when it is, in fact, a lot more uncertain."
Prasad, an outspoken and persistent critic of what he views as an incompetent, censorious, and overly invasive response by the American public health establishment to the COVID-19 pandemic, is also the host of the podcast Plenary Session, which covers medicine and health policy. He spoke to Reason about the major hit in public trust that public health agencies, the medical profession, and science in general have taken during the pandemic by insisting that Americans blindly "trust the science."
"It's more complicated than just 'the science,'" says Prasad. "It's science plus values and preferences of the population. What I think is the misstep is that the scientists, they have a policy conclusion in their mind that they want. And so they overstate the certainty of the science so they can get their desired policy conclusion. But that is a scientist usurping the political role, usurping, I think, the values and preferences of society. And they replace it with their own values and preferences, which they are completely entitled to have as one citizen among many, but [that doesn't mean] that their values and privacy should dominate."
Prasad, who spoke with Reason about the failure of lockdowns, overzealous mask and vaccine mandates, and unscientific school closures and restrictions on children, says that "groupthink" overtook the medical establishment early in the pandemic and is something physicians, public health officials, and scientists must resist if they're ever to regain the public's trust.
"The people who talked about cancel culture being problematic across all domains of life I think are really on to something," says Prasad. "I'm 100 percent sure that the majority of scientists who could have commented on COVID-19 have self-censored. The people you're hearing are a very, very tiny fraction of all the people that are actually doing science. We have no idea what the average scientist thinks about masking two-year-olds or vaccinating five-year-old mandates. They're very quiet, and they are quiet because they have almost no professional upside to speak out on the issue. Only professional downside."
But Prasad says that more medical professionals must find the courage to speak honestly if they want to restore public trust and save the younger generation from lasting harm.
"There are lots of people who study early life course development, and they study social economics, and they study disparities," says Prasad. "If you are silent on school closure…masking kids and these issues, this is the greatest issue in your career, in your lifetime. It's going to be a thousand times, 10,000 times more impactful…If you're in this business because you want to make a difference, this is the issue. This is the issue to make a difference on. It's not five years from now."

I truly appreciate Dr. Prasad and have been listening to him for several months. I consider him an excellent centrist on all things covid and vaccine. The question I have for everyone including Dr. Prasad is about the verity of any and all the data. How much of the supposed data from the past two plus years has been flawed? How many sources of data weren't gathered or have remained unexplored? It is easy to say some studies aren't up to speed but perhaps the more relevant question is why obvious opportunities and pathways for gathering data were disparaged?

    • @cerebralm
      @cerebralm Před 2 lety +4

The vaccine safety data in particular, he seems to trust too much. He dismisses the possibility of non-myocarditis harms as being misinformation or mistakes... I have experienced horrific non-myocarditis health problems myself (at least, the doctors said my heart was fine... after putting off any diagnostic work for several months... so maybe it WAS myocarditis? who even knows) and know others personally who have as well. There is a lot to unpack as to the dishonesty and dysfunction of data collection around vaccine safety. Prasad is great at seeing through government bullshit when there's no big studies involved, but as soon as there's a large clinical trial he loses all skepticism. Oh well. Still one of the best covid analysts you can find on youtube.

None of the data is right especially the ungodly amount they say died of Covid! Even the CDC said there data isn't write because they counted patients at the hospital as Covid patients that were their for something else tested positive while their but didn't know they were even sick! I can tell you as a nurse I watched one man come in died from a heart attack confirmed to family as cause of death. They then tested the dead body for Covid he was positive so guess what he was counted with that 900,000! Covid 19 while unfortunately the demise of some it's no where near what they claim! Had they been able to mandate that vaccine there probably would have been just as many deaths or not far from the vaccine alone! The government knew people were harmed from the vaccine early on from the trial they did. More people are suffering one way or another from the vaccine than not! They hid that too till that Senator gave them the place to tell their story. I saw that once and haven't seen a thing since! All those athletes that died the list is huge all young people! Sickening

When there are two or more theories on any matter of health, the government should not endorse any one of them because it could be wrong. The government should just stay out of the way and let all theories compete in the public sphere.

That's a really good example. While there _might_ (debatable, to be sure) be a place for government to help boost research in areas where there's humanitarian value but not much market value, the food pyramid was a complete corruption of that goal. It wasn't just bad research; monetary interests almost entirely influenced what went into it. There was more industry influence than scientific influence in the food pyramid! One of the biggest mistakes was to allow health officials alone to suggest policy to politicians. There seemed to be zero balance between the physical health benefits of the policies enforced and the negative effects on mental health or economic health. They all need to be balanced in order to make the decision that is least harmful overall.

First and foremost the government has no right to make those decisions. 2nd without an honest doctor that is highly regarded with proof of his medical intelligence not just medical license has to be in place. There has to always be several medical opinions with something like this but each person is different that person health past and present along with side effects to make an informed decision on risk of vaccinating vs. Not vaccinating! In my opinion any medical professional who went along with vaccinating everyone no matter what shouldn't have a medical license! Children never should have been vaccinated period! Percentage wise children had more of a chance getting hit by a car than getting Covid and dying from it! I'm a nurse I'm not vaccinated nor were my children not one of us have gotten anything. I also live in a red state we only closed school for first two months in beginning! Also we haven't worn masks here since last year!

How do health care professionals get their message across but simplify it enough to make it coherent to the public? The answer is TELL THE TRUTH, express uncertainty, explain intricacies, allow each person to do a cost benefit analysis. I wish Dr. Prasad had said it more emphatically, but he did well.

Idaho has been aggressive about limiting executive powers to prevent future mandates. Detractors have pointed out that doing so could inhibit the governor's ability to quickly respond to natural disasters, such as the frequent winter storms. The backlash to what in hindsight seem completely unjustifiable measures have a knock on effect, and those effects will undoubtedly ripple out even further. Honesty and sincerity in the begin could have done a lot to at least temper the actions of the last two years, and the re-actions that have been elicited.

"Kids are resilient." I would like to have the meaning of this canard explained to me. Resilient how. Compared to what. This is people believing what they want to believe and turning their eyes from the truth. Cowardice.
Kids are impressionable. Faces are the first interface they experience in life. Faces transmit emotional intelligence.
Kids are impressionable. Interventions in their immune system have profound effects which are permanent. They have the most to lose from medical intervention and require the most caution.
I was worried about our culture and society before covid. When I saw what was done to children to make adults feel a false comfort I realized things are far worse than I had thought. On the cusp of our greatest challenges (covid is just one thing), we have hobbled and damaged the youngest generation.

Greatful that Dr. Vinay is vocal about these issues in social media, mking this criticism more acceptable and palpable for he masses.
They don't address the same issues, but BMJ editor Mr. Doshi (not sure I spelt that right) has been vocal with the flaws of medical literature and corporate incentives for over a decade but barely anyone knows his name and face. It's time criticism takes advantage of these technological platforms.

Another big mistake is gnoring and downplaying real adverse effects. Censoring and cover up not help. Forcing someone who've had reactions to go ahead and take another shot, regardless, is cuasi criminal.

How do we have safety data for 2024-2025-2030-2035-2040 and beyond for a vaccine and new technology (used in humans) that began to be used late 2020 and extensively since early 2021?

Regarding lock downs. I was raised on farms and have a farming family background. When you have a sick cow you do not lock all of the cows in the barn with the sick cow and expect the cows that are not sick to remain illness free. You segregate the sick cow from the herd and lock it into its own location away from the rest of the herd as the rest of the herd continues to graze in the fields.

This discussion doesn't hit the nail in the head, People should decide what is best for them. Government should not, should never make decisions involving our health. Not even our doctors should do that without our consent. Keep off my body

Vinay, I admire your courage and knowledge. There are some brave people, but they lack knowledge of statistical inference. There are many statisticians and econometricians, but they lack bravery to speak loud. You're unique.

Great discussion, however, with the torrent of revelations coming out from Pfizer, Moderna, etc, I think Dr. Prasad is likely being too generous about the nature and "quality" of the so-called vaccines. We'll see.
