He was living the dream life. His support has dwindled year by year, his skill as a gamer will continue getting worse, and at his age, one becomes set in their ways rather than being impressionable like someone out of college. His refusal to change has had the opposite effect of a normal person (you are supposed to grow and learn and with experience, your income should increase, not decrease). With him gambling all his disposable income rather than invest or put away from retirement, at age 50 he will be completely screwed. Only his inheritance will save him from actually becoming homeless on the streets. However, that won't save his ego or his warped view of reality.

Much younger I worked out in 100+ heat for 10-12 hrs and came home totally drained. That 1st beer tasted incredible. You fell into bed and fell right to sleep. When you get paid that money meant something. When you saved up it made you feel GREAT that you earned it! Something a DSP or Wings NEVER felt was knowing you provided a service, a skill that you were paid for. Also it isn't HOW much you make but HOW much you have left over. The most in debt I ever got was when I made the most money.
