inspiring to know that's so human as anyone maybe that day wasn't a nice day to skate,as happens sometimes **THIS IS RODNEY MULLEN IF YOU DONT BELIEVE ME, WATCH THIS • Exclusive Arto Saari a...
Slippery floor and super bad scar tissue, watch him go ! Admit it, none of you can skate any better than he is here on your best days. Respect the man, and the Legend that is Rodney Mullen.
I think this is the time where he was trying to get in to skating again, he stopped skating for a few years because or his right leg bones started to merge together because of scar tissue, and he broke the scar tissue by hanging his leg and pulling his weight down. you can look a lot of videos where he talks about it, thats why he is so "clumsy" Actually at 6:19 you can totally see how he avoids stepping with the right foot/leg
This is around the time when his hip and leg became fused together causing immense pain and limitation. The fact he can even stand on a board in this condition is impressive. Notice the bail when he keep his one leg completely straight as he goes down on his hands.
+ThePubliusValerius Are you sure? I was under the impression the leg fusion was early 2000s while this video was in 2008. Part of the reason he's having trouble landing anything is that slippery ass floor. I've skated those floors and they suck, I dont know why they use them. Nearly frictionless. If they get wet with sweat they're a downright hazard.
nope, his leg started hurting him in 2004, so he went to the doctor and had it diagnosed. he spent 2005-2007 ripping scar tissue out of his leg, and started re-learning how to skate in 2008, taking it easy obviously. you can see how tentative he is with his right leg in this video.
When I first saw this video about 10 years ago, I didn't know Rodney had hip issues. When I skated with Rodney a couple times during practice freestyle/street sessions at a couple of contests during the early 1990s, he was still in good physical condition. Even at a 1990 Freestyle contest we all competed in, on a slippery outdoor garage surface, he messed up a few times. Smooth slippery surfaces aren't the easiest to skate on, even for those who competed on those type of surfaces for 6 years like I did.
This is Rodney in the wake of recovering from all his injuries which had piled up during _Round Three._ After everything he went through most pro skaters would have hung it all up after that. Even during the peak of his freestyle days before he transitioned to street he was always sensitive about people seeing him practice after injuries so this is also a testament to how far he's come in allowing himself to be vulnerable after all the physical stress his body's endured and the toll it's taken over decades. Freakin legend
Have you seen his older footage? He went for a good 5 mins without missing a single trick. This guy was and still is the best skateboarder in the world.
It really inspiring that after all the years.. he still skates.. I want to be like that when i get older. I'll stop skating when i can't skate anymore. Then i'll stick to skate video games.
For those of you wondering if he's still got it, start the vid @ 8:25. Amazing line. Besides, this is just a chill skate session, not an official video part. It's just them casually skating for fun.
Rodney is around 42 if my memory serves me correctly. That floor is slick, and believe me - it's difficult skating on an ice rink. This is a practice session - don't be too harsh. I was very pleased to see that he hasn't forgotten his roots - freestyle. Consistency is a difficult trick to master. Rodney has proven himself countless times. So when I read "rodney suckz" think again - he's is the creator of modern skateboarding. Show some respect.
watchign this was also inspiring for me in an unusual way.. I remembered an old quote: ----> "the most susccessful people are the best because they've failed more than any one else." Rodney works (worked) endlessly on the hard stuff that most just give up on too soon. KEEP SKATING
I guess none of you people saying, "He's lost it" or "He's old now" have ever actually been in Rodney's presence. This is how he skates most of the time. It's like he's perpetually practicing. He will practice something until it's flawless, and even then, he will continue to practice it like it isn't flawless... lol. That's part of his genius. You'll sit there thinking he sucks for a minute and then... BOOM!... He lands something ridiculous that you couldn't land with 10 years of practice.
He skated a mix of flatground and vert in the beginning as did most skaters of his generation before specializing in freestyle (then later street of course). AFAIK never competed in vert though
he's 40 and more years old. try being 40 years old and skateboarding this good. Rodney in his prime wouldn't miss a thing, as Daewon puts it; "one of the most consistent guys out there." I still think he's not human.
I cant believe he is 42 years old here! Ive seen all his videos and I started to feel real sorry for him. Then he started landing some primos and caspar pivots, handstand, more primos, and then at 8:30 i was happy to see he still has the technique!!
rodney kinda skates with the same demeanor I do! thats so cool! when he messes up he jumps right back on his board and rides around a little bit, and constantly tries! Nobody else at my skatepark does that! Makes me feel like a spaz but now I see I'm going in the right direction.
Everyone thinks hes having a bad day, that could be true, but also in all his edits it takes a long time to get the stuff he does, same with any great skater
8:40 this is where rodney mullen makes something like skateboarding look like some kung fu level type stuff made himself look like those old masters of kung fu at around 30 just stunning its amazing
no flat land tricks would invented or existed if without mullen, he deserves to be a skateboarding hall of famer a legendary icon, he achieved much in skateboarding, it's time for him to retired and be with his own family all the time but he can be a guest, judge, hosting, sponsor, giving advices to the newbie, new comers or young pro skateboard athlete if there's a competition/pro tour/session and then he can be a skateboarder character in the THPS video game all the time.
Rodney was in the Thrashin movie along with alot of the Bones Brigade, He should be a total legend, 2nd time he stood out was the classic Plan B vids, I'm getting old but feel young again when watching him skate, so many memories \m/
OMG! It really is Rodney. No kidding at all: the shaggy Mutt hair, the laugh, the facial expression he makes before he does the trick, the handstand on top of the mini-ramp. Yup, authentic. Good to see a legend at his lesure time. Rodney ROCKS! :D
well you, my friend, are a real trooper. Keep it up, it's not easy but it is fun when you ride that ladder of sucess. And when you get that certain trick (from as small as an ollie.. even), just remember how difficult it was as well as how far you have reached to accomplish this. ENJOY and have abuntant amounts of fun. Don't give up!
You people need to shut the hell up with the ITS NOT MULLEN comments because it clearly is. He's a human like everyone else, who just enjoys skating on a level others don't. If you don't think its him, go to the description for this video and click on the link. Its just a video and negative comments don't belong here.
Ya'll act like he's some invincible God who lands all his tricks 100% of the time lol. He's a human being just like all of us who puts in hours and hours of practice, sometimes just to get one trick down. Don't act like you guys dont do the same!
He's also on a slippery as fuck floor - i hate when skateparks use that dumbass concrete garage floor. also he had to break his hip on purpose to get rid of excess cartilage and bone and then relearn to skate.
Ive skated next to Rodney Mullen in Münster, back in 1990 backstage before his Run, and I would say this IS Mullen, eventhough its almost 20 year I saw him. But yes, it seems he had a very bad day...
This is not a video part. I don't know why everybody's bashing him. This is just one day of messing around. I guarantee that for every one of his video parts he messed up this many times, it's just that they don't show it. He's legendary but that doesn't mean he can just do something incredible it takes a lot of tries.
Where did you hear that? He pretty much went into detail about the whole injury thing in my "Rodney Mullen & Tony Hawk interview" at my youtube profile. Watch it and you will see what I'm talking about. Everyone is talking about this Globe Shoes interview that they talked about Rodney's interview, but I never got to see it.
Raw footage of Rodney doing Drop in or Rock to fakie would be worth milions us dollars...but skate with him, at least one day, must be worth whole life experience..
Rodney Mullen got me into Skating hands down. I remember seeing a video of him when I was a kid, on one of the old Tony hawk games I remember he did a nose manual off of a picnic table and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. After I got tired of skating it eventually led me to BMX but Rodney Mullen is still my biggest inspiration ever.
When he did vert as a kid skate videos weren't a thing yet due to lack of available equipment that was affordable so afaik there's no video footage of him skating vert. I remember his wikipedia page used to have photos of him skating vert as a kid but i think they took them down due to copyright
No matter what he did in this video, his legacy is the entire skateboard technique from ollie 'till impossible and no one of us can repeat this ever because it's history now!!! You're right this day wasn't the best, but for God's sake.. Come on and try one of his trick! :D
If this really is from 2008 you guys should realize he is nursing an old injury from 2004 and he hasn't really skated that much because of it. Scar tissue pulled his right femur into its hip socket, seizing up his back leg. Basically happened from 30 years of popping with his right leg, which is why after he stretched out the tissue himself, he retaught himself "stanceless". I heard tell of a new Almost video. It depends on whether his injury allows him to post some new stuff.
be real. rodney can do a million tricks. he is prolly tired, and maybe thinking if tricks he hasnt tried in years. in 1991 he was upset for missing nollie triple flip nomad.
if anyone would realize the difficulty of the tricks, and see that he's just having a little roll around, its not a contest where theres pressure to land tricks, he's just having a good time
5:25 i never in a million years would idolize someone but if that were me i would pass out im not religious either just pointing that out it would be an absolute honor god is coming up to you slowly and giving you humbling advice
rodney is just a human too. that means that he dont land every trick like an robot or like the ppl in TH games in his videos he just show us his best landed tricks
He didnt switch due to an injury. He has been spending the last several years trying to erase his stance completely so that he doesnt favor either way. If you watch him in the united by fate stuff, everything is switch now and it looks like his regular stance. He did an interview about it, but i no longer have the link to it. sorry.
i hope everyone knows that he's alot like everybody else, you dont land all your tricks all the time. the ones he does land, not everyone can do! he's still amazing!!
regarding on Rodney Mullen missing his tricks, people who skate know that when doing set of stairs or odd tricks that require not only years of skating but a lot of thought on doing them know that you can't land every single trick every single time even even pros miss a trick
Where is Rodney Mullen in the video? I see only guy who try to be like him and copying his style. Rodney Mullen never lost the board under his foots. He`s perfect.
The injury Rodney had was a little around the time Almost Round 3 was being made. He was trying a certain trick too many times that he was bailing on. He fixed the problem, he doesn't skate goofy because he was hurt. He skates like that because he said it was his goal to be able to be stance-less and skate with no preferred stance.
I've seen the video but he also substained in injury which makes it hard to regular so he is trying to be able to do both right now. I know this from almosts website a year ago its both but mainly what i said

Yea he was hurt in this video its like right after it happened
did he really stop for a few years? i thought he just continued through the pain
Literally the most heartbreaking thing to watch in my life. Rodney loves skating and he is getting old. Hes will always be the god of skateboarding
This is around the time when his hip and leg became fused together causing immense pain and limitation. The fact he can even stand on a board in this condition is impressive. Notice the bail when he keep his one leg completely straight as he goes down on his hands.

I thank you for uploading this video! Rodney Mullen is truly inspiring. Even if he can't pull out all the stops like he used to be able to.
would be awesome just to skate with this guy

46 years old and hes still the creator of damn near every trick we skaters kno
i dont care he's still the my favorite
thanks for uploading this! nice to see he's still owning

8:55 that truck stand to impossible is one of the sickest tricks I’ve ever seen
He was 42 years old when this video was made.
No, wtf

The halfcab nose hook impossible is easily his signature trick. Like how Steve cabs is the backside boneless and Hosois is the Christ air.
Woah, Rodney actually went up the ramp at 9:06 lol Legend
He skated a mix of flatground and vert in the beginning as did most skaters of his generation before specializing in freestyle (then later street of course). AFAIK never competed in vert though
he's 40 and more years old. try being 40 years old and skateboarding this good. Rodney in his prime wouldn't miss a thing, as Daewon puts it; "one of the most consistent guys out there." I still think he's not human.
i would pay just to see this guy skate in person....
..Genious at work
I cant believe he is 42 years old here! Ive seen all his videos and I started to feel real sorry for him. Then he started landing some primos and caspar pivots, handstand, more primos, and then at 8:30 i was happy to see he still has the technique!!
sad thing is his bad days are better than my best days.
me to. Honesty there it is
His worst day is 10000000 times better than your best dream day
When Ronny skates on to the cart it do not move. He is so light on his feet it like bruce lee. A true legend
I think this is in the time that he had all of that scar tissue on his leg, that's why he is walking strangely
I think so too.
I respect Mullen! He's one of the best skaters , he's a legend
meeting Rodney is one of my 7 life goals
7:07 clear example of how slippery it is.
he avoided that vert ramp like the plague
That's a 4 foot miniramp.
rodney kinda skates with the same demeanor I do! thats so cool! when he messes up he jumps right back on his board and rides around a little bit, and constantly tries! Nobody else at my skatepark does that! Makes me feel like a spaz but now I see I'm going in the right direction.

2008 thats when i was born 😊😀
8:40 this is where rodney mullen makes something like skateboarding look like some kung fu level type stuff made himself look like those old masters of kung fu at around 30 just stunning its amazing
How old is this video camera?
Where was this filmed, a movie set or something?
no flat land tricks would invented or existed if without mullen, he deserves to be a skateboarding hall of famer a legendary icon, he achieved much in skateboarding, it's time for him to retired and be with his own family all the time but he can be a guest, judge, hosting, sponsor, giving advices to the newbie, new comers or young pro skateboard athlete if there's a competition/pro tour/session and then he can be a skateboarder character in the THPS video game all the time.

So you're telling me after ALL these years nobody would have done anything?
I actually been through the same things Rodney has so this is quite relative for me.
has any 1 even seen rodney drop in or do vert?
42 years old and he stills awesome!!!
OMG! It really is Rodney. No kidding at all: the shaggy Mutt hair, the laugh, the facial expression he makes before he does the trick, the handstand on top of the mini-ramp. Yup, authentic. Good to see a legend at his lesure time. Rodney ROCKS! :D
what is the first trick he did called when he went in to fakie and did an impossable thingy is it just a fakie impossible?
i love Rodney he is so great!
chill sesh, just in his element. He ends up getting in a nice groove
well you, my friend, are a real trooper. Keep it up, it's not easy but it is fun when you ride that ladder of sucess. if somebody has a bad day, nobody has to share this bad day !
what is up with the video camera. it must have came out the same time Rodney did
Ya'll act like he's some invincible God who lands all his tricks 100% of the time lol. He's a human being just like all of us who puts in hours and hours of practice, sometimes just to get one trick down. Don't act like you guys dont do the same!

also he had to break his hip on purpose to get rid of excess cartilage and bone and then relearn to skate.
i dont care how old he is and how many tricks he misses he created the tricks im doing today
he was 42 years old in this video, so he's not the youngest any more. still nice tricks he does.
Ive skated next to Rodney Mullen in Münster, back in 1990 backstage before his Run, and I would say this IS Mullen, eventhough its almost 20 year I saw him. But yes, it seems he had a very bad day...

cant wait for tony hawks remaster to come out and scate with Rodney again
rodney mullen rocks!!!!!!!!
I'm gonna make a song simply on the sound of the camera zooming in and out..
@Rorasauras man, have you seen the video when he is on a tv show?, IT WAS AMAZING!, a lot of SICK TRICKS without falling anyone ( sry bad english)
not me!! hell no....that would be a quick game...lol...Rodney's skating is amazing!
Raw footage of Rodney doing Drop in or Rock to fakie would be worth milions us dollars...but skate with him, at least one day, must be worth whole life experience..

Rodney and Arto, jeje it´s funny...
Thanks for the video...

The pants are holding u back...we need rodneys magical short shorts stat!

42 years old... i wanna see what can you do at that age... this man is the greatest of all time, period.-
No shot like I just turned 42 been off a skateboard for 20 years and even then I could never do 1/16 of what he could do.
are they playing the quiet game??
5:25 i never in a million years would idolize someone but if that were me i would pass out im not religious either just pointing that out it would be an absolute honor god is coming up to you slowly and giving you humbling advice
rodney is just a human too.
that means that he dont land every trick like an robot or like the ppl in TH games
in his videos he just show us his best landed tricks
Not many, Just more basics from the old days, Hes still keeping it old school cause that's all he knows and what he does best.
Anyone kno how old he is now?
Rodney Mullen is the King 🙏
yea he is beast!
He didnt switch due to an injury. He has been spending the last several years trying to erase his stance completely so that he doesnt favor either way. If you watch him in the united by fate stuff, everything is switch now and it looks like his regular stance. He did an interview about it, but i no longer have the link to it. sorry.
I wonder if anyone besides the cameraman know's they are in the presence of greatness..
i hope everyone knows that he's alot like everybody else, you dont land all your tricks all the time. the ones he does land, not everyone can do! he's still amazing!!

was he riding an almost or globe skateboard
guys watch it from 8:30 to the end. This IS rodney mullen!
I don't skate but, love Rodney Mullen! I know why they call him the God Father of street skating!
@12pooppants there is one out there i believe he mentions it in his book :)
when he skates.. he entertains...
iT DOESNT MATTER mullen is a legend
Where is Rodney Mullen in the video? I see only guy who try to be like him and copying his style. Rodney Mullen never lost the board under his foots. He`s perfect.
good to see some bloopers too, all can to misstakes! even the god of skateboard ;)
how old is Rodney now? the other guy is arto saari...
@Rorasauras yeah, if you and me are also pros. Most of us couldn't do a fraction of what the pros do even with an infinite number of tries.
The injury Rodney had was a little around the time Almost Round 3 was being made. He was trying a certain trick too many times that he was bailing on. He fixed the problem, he doesn't skate goofy because he was hurt. He skates like that because he said it was his goal to be able to be stance-less and skate with no preferred stance.
mullens in the house!!!
@SingJiya ah but did you come to the conclusion that he is a human and no one is perfect?
the thing to note is the lack of frustration and anger. If it was me, i would have split my board in half by the end
awesome
its just one day that he is off, he still got the primo flip, everyone has an off day
he still has it
I've seen the video but he also substained in injury which makes it hard to regular so he is trying to be able to do both right now. I know this from almosts website a year ago its both but mainly what i said
the people who are talking negative about him must think that all his video parts are all done first try. except for his demo in westwood, nj, now that shit is crazy
