  • Todays episode is a real treat. James got this genset completely free if he could remove it from the building it was in. So now that it's home lets see if we can get it going. It was removed because it was putting coolant in the oil pan. Not sure what's wrong with it.

Why rev it? It was designed to run @1800 rpm and sounds best above 1400 where it REALLY starts to sing anyway. Personal opinion, but I'd rather listen to 1800 rpms running steady than needless revving through the idle speed. Bumping the throttle around the idle mark sounds great on a Harley, but I don't get any thrill hovering around Idle speed. My two cents and it's worth about that!

Dual starters need special wiring to sequence operation. ( This assumes that dual starters are used to provide enough cranking power Vs dual starters in order to provide backup in case one fails. )
When power is applied to " start " , starter 1 solenoid pulls the drive in however power is not applied to motor 1. Starter 2 then receives a trigger that pulls the drive in and power is applied to motor 2. A trigger is then sent from Starter 2 to starter 1 to apply power to motor 1 .
This is done to prevent gear clash if one starter is spinning and the other is trying to engage.

They are the backup generators for if the power goes out they provide the power to get the units back up and running. I mostly just service them once a year. We used to have these in Electrahaul mine trucks. They turned big DC generators and blowers to propel 65 ton trucks carrying 100 tons of rock up a 12% grade. Ours held 30 gallons of oil IIRC and the add mark was add 3 gallons. Twin 6V149's mated on a common crank. To see if one of the banks of 3 cylinders wasn't firing right we sprayed cheap white spray pain on the cold exhaust manifolds and fire it up. If one was slow burning off the paint that was the bad one. Ours used air starters, not electric. About 1100 HP to the electric wheel motors.

Hey bud the water in the oil is most likely the oil cooler that’s a very common problem with those 149’s where the oil cooler it self mounts and seals in the housings usually rust out and let water and oil mix when we do engine tear downs we usually send the housings off to be inserted where they like to rust out. Thing sounds mint though keep up the great work buddy.

If you don't have ether you need to squirt some WD40 in the air intake while the engine is turning over to get a heavy diesel started in cold weather and if the battery is a little flat.

None of the powerplants in the telco central offices are this big and I think it's because all the equipment in the COs run on -48 to -52 VDC . AC power is for the rectifiers that charge the huge jars of lead acid batteries.
