This man really just made a nakey jakey video
Exactly. Not only is he describing the evolution of open world games, but he's demonstrating the philosophy behind them (borrowing and expanding) in the video production itself. It's genius, really.
10 seconds was all it took to demask this man
so what, it’s a great video format to do
ⁿ⁰
Not only that but he also brings up a similar criticism that Jakey had about Red Dead 2’s handholding nature.
As someone who doesn't play much video games, I was first introduced to open worlds through Red Dead Redemption 2, so as someone who didn't know of the formulas or methods it repeated i found the open world fascinating and it absorbed me. Since then, I have played video games more often but never really found that magic I experienced in Red Dead until about 3 weeks ago, when I decided to pick up Elden Ring, and it has just consumed my life.
As someone who isn't familiar with the feel of a controller itself, I never expected to be fighting Malenia, the supposed hardest boss in the supposed hardest game, but here I am, on my probably 200th attempt, fighting her and I'm loving every second of it, because no game has ever immersed me like Elden Ring has. It's amazing.
As a soulsborne veteran, malenia just straight up sucks. To me at least. There are plenty of amazing, tough but fair and fun to learn bosses, but again, malenia isn't one of them. And she was the only boss I used mimic tear for, she broke my spirit...
But surely the reasons you like it are completely different from the reason you like Elden ring the open world is not even comparable. Red dead’s world is alive whilst Elden rings is dead.
@@sk8ermGs for the frist time a dead open world is better then an alive open open world.
I love rdr 2 but elden ring's open world, lore ,art style ,combat, gameplay and playstyle is better then rdr 2
@@himanshupandey8771I would argue RDR2 is overall the better quality game but to each their own.
@@mindeyethemasterscreen2712 rdr2 has better story and characters and can be graphic compare to elden ring but i prefer gameplay and combat more then story.
Thats doesn't mean rdr2 is a mid or bad game it is a great game in its own but for me it is not better then elden ring
Nic, this is the first video of yours I’ve come across, and I just wanna say great job man. It’s always great to see someone make the effort into carving their on spot in the video essay space. Really looking forward to what you cook up next - you’ve earned my subscription!
My favorite “sidequest” in Elden Ring is the start of Boc’s storyline. It starts when you hear Boc calling out for help - standard drive-by quest, except he’s camouflaged as a tree. Your only hint as to why that would happen is if you stumble upon other demi-humans disguised as trees, but if you’re curious enough, you’ll run into him eventually. Once you do, he mentions heading back to his home, a cave on the beach. He doesn’t say which beach or which cave, but that alone is enough direction to get the player exploring. So you find the cave, meet Boc again, and clear the cave, but once you beat the boss, the cave…keeps going. You follow it to the end, and wind up on an island you otherwise would’ve had no way of getting to, and on that island is a church with some unique incantations - which you can only access if you’ve also killed a dragon, which the player might’ve done before this quest even started, or it might be the last step in the quest for this particular player. Just stumbling upon this one NPC guides you through so much territory with only one or two player nudges required. There’s no waypoints, no quest log, you have to remember what he tells you and follow your nose, and you are rewarded handsomely for it.
This was the first time I’ve actually watched the full 30 mins on any CZcams video, great work
Really glad I came across your channel this video was a banger. Makes me really hope that the upcoming (probably) open world 3D Mario game can be used as a 4th example, I think it'd be interesting to see blending a truly open world gameplay style with the mechanics of a mario game
About half way through, I love the video so far and your editing is on point too! Keep doing what youre doing man, i smell success :)
why only 13 views? for that quality you deserve so much more views
I think because he only has 5 videos so far. His channel probably isnt being recommended a lot.
I agree! Therefore: Liked & Subscribed plus shoutout on the socials.
It's Nakey Jakey

Would say Jak and Daxter also really captivated me as a kid, as it really presented the idea of a vivid fantasy world existing within a game. But my first true open world game would be Morrowind, that made me realize a game could be a place that believably exists on its own, not just made for you to run around and collect stuff. Hope we see more of the elden ring style games that don't hold your hand and let curiosity drive your exploration.
This video is stunningly good. Its outlines evolution of gaming and gives great direction. You're brilliant dude. Liked and subbed
Great video man, interesting and good energy. narrative moves well and a great listen. Hope you keep climbing
Great video man! Love the energy you have
Awesome video bro, hope your channel blows up so you can always make content
yooo great videos man i’m the guy you meet on that plane a while back keep it up!
Hey i just subscribed !!! I litterally can’t believe u are not a huge youtuber already ! The quality u have to offer is insane. I loved this video and hope that u will be succesfull in whatever ur doing!
For me, my very first “video game” was horizon zero dawn.
At the time, I’ve only seen video games. Not played them. And Horizon actually showed me the possibilities of an open world game. At the time, I did not pay attention to the screen cluttering and I was actually compelled to try and get everything. But when I started seeing the same thing over and over, it got boring.
(I’ve also played the new Horizon Forbidden West and I have to say I really like the idea that they put into the ability to disable any map markers. But most players will probably ignore that feature and settle for the same old hand holding experience”
That’s why I started leaning towards more linear games. God of War and Dark Souls 3 being the tops. I will never forget the feeling of beating Soul of Cinder and the exhilarating feeling of witnessing the beautifully crafted story of GoW.
But Elden Ring. God I cannot even begin. It took my favourite linear type formula of previous souls instalments and paired it up with the creative mind of George R. R. Martin, which is a deadly combination. I do agree the following the story of Elden Ring is very difficult, but there’s nothing a few more vids won’t solve.
Anyhow, I 100% agree with you take and I’ve really enjoyed this video, really nice to see this stuff!
Good video! Keep it up dude!
I haven’t seen the nakey Jakey video so maybe I’ll have my mind changed, but I just can’t imagine Rdr2 open world design being outdated. Not just in obvious things that you mentioned like fidelity, but in terms of how you explore the world laid out before you like random strangers events.
Go watch it, it’s a great video. I love Rdr2 but he explains how bad the mission design is and a bunch of things that made him upset. He made a new video and adressed all of his RDR2 criticism and he honestly felt like he went to harshly on the game and loved it as a whole. Nevertheless, they’re good videos watch them both
@@natespidey7952 sounds like an interesting watch for after work.
RDR2 is a very good 7/10 but it has massive gameplay and mission design issue that hold it back from being an 8 or a 9 like RDR1 was. Highly recommend Jake's video as well.
@@Pedro_Le_Chef imagine thinking RDR2 is a FUCKING 7!? Linear mission design is dumb but the game wasn’t designed like that it’s basically a linear-open world. It’s got amazing details that the community still talks about and the gameplay can be clunky but that’s because it’s difficult to control with a controller, with a mouse it’s better. Jakey released a new video and called out a bunch of his criticism too. A 7 is insulting asf
@@natespidey7952 7 is very fair considering how much it regresses from RDR1.
Worse aiming mechanics. Reticle won't stay still which makes free aim feel disgusting.
no more combat roll, now it's a clunky belly flop (muh realism).
Enemies are bullet sponges.
Very few gang hideouts.
Very few duels.
Random events are scripted and never happen again.
Animal spawns are painfully rare.
I could go on. Great visual, mid gameplay, feels excruciating on replay.
i was genuinely shocked when i saw the sub count, this video has amazing quality. can't wait to see what you do in the future!
Love the vid rly high grade content! Should deserv 1000x veiws
sick setup dude!👍
Nice work! I really like this video's ideas and explanations! Suscribed and can't wait to see what else you want to talk about! thank you
Unrelated but you talking being about AC being shown in classrooms reminded me how the hell did I manage to convince my hardcore religious conspiracy theorist mother that didint even let me watch pokemon that the series was educational? I never considered how crazy that sounds all I did was show her a historical figure and she genuinely thought it was some cool math games
Ok but on a serious note while i dont have much of worth to add to what you said besides the overall point, that theres been a serious stagnation issue, bloat, too much handholding and monotonous and unfullfilling tasks without a soul, and it's why we appreciate the rare fromsoft, zelda or RDR2 world I do hope developers and more importantly but radically less likely the Ceos have seen the success and taken notes, or maybe they're making so much money right now they don't care who knows, regardless im glad for the good ones we have. Like how the hell did Fromsoft manage to arguably do exploration and world design even better in the "dlc" *cough 80 hours cough*, they can't keep getting away with this!!
Anyways Hope this pops off I watched the whole thing and this is genuinely the same quality as some guys im subbed to at 100k+ subs im so glad I found your channel, excited for the next one✌️
Thank you for coming to my tedtalk, how the hell did I write this much
They can't keep getting away with this 😂
You're so right. Best DLC I've ever played. Still bashing my head against some of the later bosses, hoping to at least finish the main story soon, but I know I have dozens of hours of exploration left
Awesome vid dude!
Great video!
Im finding so many hidden gems of youtubers recently, and thank the CZcams gods for that
Great video man!
For someone with only 5 videos. This was very well done. Good stuff, hope you blow up!
Great video really informing and entertaining
great video dude
How does this guy have such few subs? This video is sick and super high quality. You got my follow Nic. Biggups 🔥
Hey, this is a very fine piece of CZcams gaming video. Keep it up boi .
Tbh i feel this 'modern' open world game design sacrifices story for openness and curiousity , a game like Oblivion or Witcher 3 strikes perfect balance which also means content is king
Great video! Just dropped a sub! :)
great vid, subd
Dragons Dogma 2 sounds great. With Elden Ring, the new dlc pushes the exploration further with a degree of verticality not seen since the first Dark Souls.
Fire content brother nice breakdowns
In like a couple years when your a way bigger CZcamsr (cause you will be) imma be like “yeah, I was his 538th subscriber”
This channel is going places, u can tell a lot of work has been put into it, and I appreciate someone telling me the good things and not only the negatives
I've been WAITING for an open world game that actually uses the environment diagetically and maximizes its interactivity. Imagine a Native American puzzle platformer where you interact with flora, fauna, weather, spirits etc. to find dungeons and advance the story (no map, waypoints or compass, just these core interactions that help guide you). Or some crazy dense, crazy vertical fantasy/sci fi setting where your path physically alters the map and either opens new areas or locks others off, making every move you make a consequential choice. There simply isn't enough imagination in open world design.
The devs have said that they loved how horizon zero dawn handled their open world, more the layout of the world.the discovery stuff and intentionally keeping things from the player are all from dd2 and Elden ring
Open world games should focus more on putting detail and depth into their world , make them feel alive , not making a 2tb shalow empty map
Really dope video, as you grow you should try to develop your own unique visual style, as I feel like a lot of the video seems to be really similar to nakeyjakey’s style. That said your ability to collect your thoughts properly and edit them into a cohesive and good looking video already puts you ahead of most of the pack! Keep it up and I’m sure through just making more videos and you will find a style that’s uniquely yours, also I get it not that many ways to present a video essay lol 🔥.
Yup that's an easy subscribe 😎 keep it up!
You also can see the difference between Eastern and Western game design. For Eastern, they focus on gameplay and exploration like an actual GAME, on the other side Western games are very formula-generic and story-focus like an Interac movie. Different mindset, different culture.
Great video!!! I do think you should’ve included or mentioned Kingdom Come Deliverance, it also has an exploration focus in its open world design
The algorithm has blessed me with this video. Well done.
Great video well worth the watch.
Really great analysis. The excessive map markers are so exhausting to see early in a game and really put me off. The first time I really noticed how bad it is was in AC Unity when I saw the whole map and just decided nope, I'll just have a nap instead.
I think BOTW is one of the most important games of this generation for the exact reasons you said. I was worried Fromsoft going open world but I adore Elden Ring and I really hope we see more games like this.
Anyway I actually just came here to say the video is awesome and got a little carried away. Excited for the next one!
Keep em coming and I'll keep clicking!
I like the old style more, RDR2 is my favorite game of al time, GTA SA is close tho
Really great video, dude! Earned a like and a subscription from me 👍🏻
these types of open world games have been around since 2010
So Nintendo refined the Ubisoft blueprint like they just did the inverse of how the map is revealed
Thanks for getting me through my workout 💪
I would value an open world where your actions change the landscape. More than just outposts changing flags, imagine a Far Cry like game with a revolution where places can become ghost towns or thriving communities, or change the actual physical landscape (what if every town was like Megaton from Fallout 3?), or other things that ensure no two playthroughs are the same
Good job keep going
Bro, you went shallow on Elder Scrolls. That Morrowind/Oblivion gameplay? Been that way since Arena. Daggerfall was my first open world rpg.
I like elder scrolls way more then red dead or elden ring
@@Historybuff_769 Never played a Red Dead game. I have about 1500 hours across Skyrim and Special Edition. 130 hours in Elden Ring so far.
We now also have a 4th example with Elden Ring DLC, which made a completely new map that functions the same way as the Lands Beetween
I got into gaming really late. Breath of the wild was my first realy game I owned. Man what a great first experience
my experience with elden ring was negatively affected by the flaws that RDR2 doesn't have,
which is the leveling system.
I was constantly either underleveled or overleveled, I found radahn after having finished nearly the entire game, so imagine how dissapointing was a fight with such an epic setup...
rdr2 doesn't have such problems and I generally vibe with the setting more, so I guess Its just a matter of personal preference.
I think you have greatly over simplified the Bethesda Game Studios design style, and conflated Starfield's design problems with a problem in the way they design open worlds. Compass pointers aside, BGS games have always encouraged exploration in a way that Rockstar and Ubisoft style open worlds never did.
I feel like the modern design principles having mid stories really gets made up for by the expertly crafted exploration. Playing the elden ring dlc I was absolutely blown away by every area, and I think that makes it truly worth it
A game that has not an open world but an open solar system and no hand holding whatsoever ever is "Outer Wilds". They solved the story issue too. No matter what order you experience things in, the story is captivating and makes you want to play and discover more.
It’s not an open world by any means, but I think the new God of War games have a unique design with a very linear story that occasionally opens up to some semi-open regions that reward exploration. I wonder if this hybrid model will see more iterations?
What IF a game doesnt have its own narrative but somehow lets the player create their own?
This is great stuff
Bro deserves like 10000% more views😭
I agree heavily with you man.
The biggest problem for me, as you mentioned too, is that these companies nowadays go with "what has worked" and then sell the same game over and over and over..
Man i am sooo done with playin the same game again and again just with little tweeks here and there.
It's BORING.
Elden Ring was a real GAME CHANGER for me!
It is just the best Open World EVER for me personal.
I had everything i was hating on the other games.
I hate that handholding bs.. if i want i quest, i have no problem to look for it online.
If i want the story.. no problem man i watch some yt videos.
I loved the lore of Warcraft.. so i read all the books to get it.
I don't need the game to present me a movie story. If i want a move i watch one.
But hey, that's just me.
My BIGGEST concern is INOVATION.
There is none.
They just focus on money and don't care about good game.
Man i'm so glad Elden Ring popped off, cause now it may be the time that SOME developers/companies rethink their approach...
checked the comments at the lens of the video just to be surprised with low views! crazy, this was such an entertaining video hope i’ll grow fast
great video! your channel is def very underrated. I was wondering why you didn't mention Witcher 3, but maybe its just too different of an open world than those of Rockstar, Ubisoft and Bethesda. Also, just as a fanboy I would loved to have heard your thoughts on Mario Odysseys open world compared to BOTW, since both are made by the same Nintendo studio (although I acknowledge that they are very different and odyssey might not even be considered fully open world)
Now that I think about it maybe a really good open world game would be like an generic isekai anime. Where you have to defeat the demon king for some random reason. But in the end you never see them defeat the demon king because you get soooo much side tracked that the main goal doesn't matter that much (also most likely because they dont have to budget for a lot of seasons xD).
Piranha Bytes have been making different Open World RPGs since 2001, no credits.
Arena and Daggerfall goes back to 1994 and 1996, not on the map.
Outward improved upon BoTW formula, let curiosity drive the player and giving no help so ever, but we have to talk about innovation of Elden Ring 3 years later.
And I'm touching only RPGs here, we can add Stalker series in the mix.
“Open world games feel the same”
*shows games from the same series*
You earned a sub
No xenoblade X mention even though monolith's experience with X is what made BOTW what it is
Do we really need even more NakeyJakey videos on the interwebs though?
Yea, I’ve been seeing a good chunk of Jakey style videos recently. However with this guy he’s atleast very new so I’m hoping eventually he finds his own style.
The handholding works in city's and doesn't break immersion due to most of the time when u have that ur in a vehicle and most vehicles in this day and age have GPS
Wow you'll be a great video essayist soon
Hey Nic, first of all: Very good Video. I can see, that you put Time and effort in this. As with this Nakey Clone Comments. Ignore them. They dont know, that Jakey took „his Style“ from Anthony Burch and just added the Yoga Ball, Plus VideoGameDunkey Humor. Which is totale Fine too. Forgive Then. They dont know how much Work a Video like this takes. Keep grinding, much love
Not to nit pick but dragons dogma 2 feels just like the first which is like 12 yrs old.
As much as I still love open world games, I would definitely love to see the genre being experimented with a lot more.
While I like Elden Ring, I would say that it comes from a company that repeats formula as much as Ubisoft does and I doubt that we'll see From Software ever do anything new with the open world genre. If they do another one, it will be a minor iteration of Elden Ring - no matter what the game will be called - because that's how that company rolls. From Software have a 30 year history of minor iterations on established formulas with extremely rare deviations.
Elden Ring doesn't really innovate as much as it is just the logical results of applying some well-worn open world tropes to the Dark Souls formula, and I expect From Software to stick to that blueprint for any eventual future open world titles. So I don't really know where to look for future innovations in the genre. Perhaps Nintendo will have something interesting up their sleeve some day.
Ooooh this is a crazy good video, comment for that algo 👀
Thanks for the vid. I think DD2 is my G.O.Y. I think with city games emergent events or compelling AI will suffice for the distraction. One thing AC Odyssey did well is lock an area for narrative tension to stay in when there is a plague.
daggerfall was Bethesda's first open world game, not morrowind. it came out in the 90's
naked jake and it’s consequences
I sort of agree with you that storytelling is something that the modern open world game needs to develop on when it comes to Zelda, but I do think that Elden ring made some crazy strides when it comes to narrative within these games. Clearly a lot of the evolution comes from their storytelling in prior souls games, but they are the only makers in this genre that make me feel like I’m in a world that existed before I entered it, and my curiosity about the world is properly nurtured throughout the game. Something that I think is worth discussion is the gameplay vs narrative priority discussion. Elden ring is a video game primarily, so its top priority is gameplay, and it aims to give everything narratively necessary through the gameplay. If you’re a lore fiend then you read some item descriptions. I don’t think it’s a perfect game, but the narrative drive and execution are top tier and different from almost anybody else making games.
I grant that Zelda sort of tried to do the environmental storytelling that Elden ring does but the environment is not really structured around the plot in the same way that Elden ring is.
great video, you should play Outer Wilds if you haven't already
Rdr2 open world experience is so much better than elden rings open world experience
Japanese got that wicked art and creativity locked down.
bruh do u need a sound guy? i notice some fall off in volume at the end of your phrases.
otherwise great production :3 keep going.
also the most striking difference between botw and ass creed is: botw has 15 towers for the whole map. ass creed 2 doesnt come close to botw's size if you combine all 5 maps, but has over 70 towers..
also each tower in botw is a special little boi with its own challenges, while the ass creed towers are basically all the same with a few exceptions.
GTAs success lies in the human connection.
its kinda trippy seeing someone a decade younger than me talk about new open world design and its design principles i remember noticing in banjo-tooie as a kid.
maps lead the way for lazy level design.
if you dont have using a map as core feature of your game it SHOULD be designed without one. and without quest markers. but thats hard. much easier to make a game look real and then give you markers.
specifically im talking about leading the players eye and action through level design.
I think these games resonate a lot with me, I love all three :D
Nice video! I think you should change the title to ‘the evolution of modern open world games’. I was expecting the history of games discussed not to start from 2000! 😅
It's nothing new for Nintendo though they've been doing this since before Open World games were a thing, their the best developers when it comes to level design and gameplay and have been for almost 40yrs now.
Oh my, look at this... A diamond.
It is interesting to note how clear the difference is between Western and Eastern developers
I shitid my pants
